Hi there finnaly got my permanent resident card in end march!!Arrive in Toronto 13 april and start working one week later on a construction companie doing pipe fitting water main sours!!I use to run a dozer CAT D4 a CAT330 excavator !!!!Im already a union member too 183 labourers international union of north America!!!Cost me 700$!!!My intention is to get the most experience I can then next year try the move north!!!Im not bad right now 33$H as a union member!!!!I still follow the forum and believe i will at least try there once!!!!Wish the best to all of you and maybe soon I will be one of you too!!!!!Im 35 but a hard worker dedicated and loyal to the job!!!!Thanks to all for the excellent information and believe it that you can do it!!!Sorry about my English!!!!! The RVF oil sands meet up went very well, I had a massive hang over all day yesterday from all of the drinks that the boys bought me, there were six of us there; myself, Kick, Irishman, Djemba, Habsfan and Zeeman. We all got pretty drunk and hit up a few bars on Whyte Ave, I can't remember much of what happened towards the end of the night but I woke up on djemba's sofa the next morning in one piece, thanks again for letting me crash.

I'm off to a small town in southern Saskatchewan tomorrow to work a shut down at a coal fired electrical plant for the next 3-4 months, will probably work 24/4, not sure if I'll even come back to Etown or not, we'll see. I will likely move back to Edmonton when the job is done as my tenant's lease is up in my condo, so I'll probably move into it in the fall.

So this year I may not even work in the oil sands, we'll see whats happening come the fall, I wouldn't doubt that I end up there but I'm going to try to spend more time in Edmonton over the next year or so.

Again, good to meet up with you guys, hopefully we all see each other again in the coming months.

First post on this forum, i've been following this thread for a few months now and have really been inspired by the stories here and have gained so much useful information I otherwise wouldn't have at my disposal. I just wanted to know a few things, and gain a bit of understanding after reading through the thread multiple times.

First, I'm pretty young at 18 and have completed my Highschool. I am taking a two year program for Welding and fitting which is quite comprehensive. After the programs end I get a CWB all positions ticket. The program is roughly 1800 hours. I'm hoping that after those 2 years I can move directly to Alberta or Saskatchewan and start working in the oil and gas industry. What would the chances be of me landing a gig with no previous shop or welding experience with the exception of my two year program? The only experience I have is greenskeeping at a Golf course which is basically maintenance driving around light to mid weight machinery and working as a co-ordinator for mountain operations at a Ski resort.

I'm used to logging long hours and working hard, its what I like to do, and I think landing a gig related in some form to the oil industry would fit my needs. Preferably I would like to land a welding related job if not i'd like to get my foot in the door with Drilling and then find a welding job during spring break up.

What would be the best time of the year to make the move to Alberta, I really don't want to make the move then end up stuck in the off season.

You DID NOT read the thread multiple times! Your specific question about timing has been answered at least 5 times through out the pages of this thread!

P.S. My opinion, two consecutive years of school for welding WITHOUT getting PAID work experience is a waste of time and money! Pre-employment for welding and fitting, ideally, is 6 months or less, to get you working right away to log your hours to become a Journeyman., You spend 2 years in school it better be for Instrumentation Tech, Petroleum Engineer, NOT 2 years in a class for Welding and Fitting.

Rosstan makes a good point that you don't really need two years of schooling to become a welder and those two years could be spent either working as a welder's helper (and eventually as an apprentice) or taking a two year diploma from NAIT or SAIT which would guarantee a good job.

However, you're 18 and probably still live at home and are likely attending a CEGEP in Quebec where school fees are very low. I say finish your schooling, learn as much about welding as possible and get as much "time under the hood" as you can. At least once you're done and ready to move out west, you should have enough practical experience and theory to become a really good welder.

If you decide that you don't want to become a welder, I highly recommend taking the Canadian Welding Bureau's level one inspector program, I know level ones in Alberta making $70-80/hour and level twos making $120-140. Sorry if it seemed like I rubbed you the wrong way, I did read through the thread multiple times, I really should have taken more notes on when to look for work.

The two years is not sitting in a class room, Most of the work is done in the school shop, which is brand new and quite nice. The thing is it is not a waste of money as Scotian explained, Its free, minus a few minor expenses, what they offer there compared to any other school in the area. Also, for the moment I don't have the means to pay for a pre employment course which runs a couple grand and move out for a few months while paying rent. For my situation its the best option

Also, I noticed there hasn't been very much talk about drilling, i've seen talks about well servicing and MWD but really not much on the actual drilling. I'm suprised no one has mentioned License to Drill on Discovery.

Sandbagger, concentrate on learning as much as possible about all aspects of welding in your course and especially, if they offer it, advanced welding techniques and processes such as orbital welding, plasma welding, laser welding, etc. Of course, you should become competent at basic welding as well; GMAW, SMAW, etc.

A career in welding can definitely take you places and it doesn't always have to be the back breaking labour gigs, if you get into the advanced stuff, you can go all over the world and make huge money (underwater welding, etc).

Also, there's some schools in the USA that offer some pretty intense advanced welding engineering degrees:

Those guys are on the forefront of welding technology and especially the unique demands of welding in the oil sands. Like I say throughout this thread, just because you start out in a trade like welding, doesn't mean you'll be burning rod your entire life, you can go onto QA/QC, management, R&D, etc.
