Did the H2S Alive course today at Spectrum Safety Services in Kingsway

The instructor was pretty knowledgeable and the class was fun and useful. I would recommend the place. I booked it for $140

So I've arrived In E-town and went out on whyte ave last night with a friend I met at the hostel who's a surveyor in the oil patch anyway lost my wallet , phone , irish drivers license pretty much my pockets or all empty I didn't even drink that much startin to think I was robbed FML!! lol

Holy shit man that's a bad way to start your stay in Canada! Did you go back to the bars you were out to and ask them if they found anything? You should, sometimes decent people return those kinds of things, also try contacting the Edmonton police, someone may have returned it to them, less the cash, of course.

I wouldn't be surprised if it happens to him, I was on a job once and a guy came up to our truck to tell us about something and I asked my partner "what part of Newfoundland is that guy from?" and my partner told me that he wasn't a Newfie, straight from Ireland.

^^^^ http://www.indeed.ca and visit the corporate offices downtown or in Foothills Industrial since you're in Calgary. Early morning face to face. Early morning before 10 am is very useful. You may end up meeting the general manager or a key supervisor.

Went back to the bar but nothing there ah well didn't lose anything major so its all good.

Ha ya man I have done a recovery week and am now back to full health. I cut back on the girls and reduced my hours at work while eating better and spending more time relaxing. Hopefully a lesson here for the people reading about keeping a good work/social balance in the oil sands.

In a way it was good to know how hard I can push myself and I have changed things up to prevent it happening again.

Good, was meant to head out drilling today but it got cancelled last minute because of the rain last night. Should be heading out sometime this weekend. Things will start to pick up again coming into the winter months. I have a feeling its going to be a very busy winter for drilling.

Sometimes. I have also got scotish/english/austrailian/new zelander haha. I have to change the way I talk quite a bit for people to undertsand me. I talk quite fast when I am around other Irish and we all kind of mutter in general.

They will start to hire a lot more coming into September and October. I would try make a trip up to Leduc with a resumer, H2S alive ticket, first aid, class 5 and a truck (or at least say you have one).

So I have sent a lot of emails and I have only gotten a few back. So far I have 2 for sure managers to call in the trade I'm interested in once I arrive. I have written down all the phone numbers for places I have sent my resume/driver abstract to. I'm just wondering, what time do you guys think is best for calling and reaching the managers or people in charge on hiring? I would like to have a good 5 or more appointments set up for when I arrive so I have something to work on. I know I will feel better and get much better responses when I start hitting the pavement! I was talking to my friend about drilling and well service rigs and he was telling me its really not as big of a deal like it's made out to be once you get over the mental aspect of it. It is very tempting as you start out at 8-10k a month for a lease/floor hand, but I really don't think I am cut out for that insane labour. Also unless you do something like Irishman I don't think its much of a career especially once you get into 30s-40s and your body starts to break down.

Avoid Monday mornings and Friday afternoons, I think Wednesday at 2PM is the perfect time to call.

If you have a bit of motivation you can move up to be a driller within 4-6 years regards of background. You are then taking home between 150-250k a year. Do this for a few years and go directional. You are inside on the computer 70% of the time.

If I didn't already have a degree I would go leasehanding and work my way up. The money is insane and its a straight forward ladder to some very high paying jobs.

It is tough work though and it will take some toll on the body. At the same time though you will be absolutly ripped and probably pretty alpha after a few months on the rigs.

Ya that is true and there are a lot of travel opportunities. I met a guy in Thailand that was a driller and worked month on month off and still cleared $150k a year working in NZ and living in Thailand. It's working with the convicts and getting treated like shit that would get to me.

So I met up with Zeeman yesterday he's a cool guy took me a drive around the city and to west ed mall. I went this morning and booked my h2s alive for Thursday bused it down to book instead of ringing to make sure I can find my way there this city is a nightmare to get around but then again im so used to Ireland and it being so small. Im just gonna write down all the names and fone numbers of Oil companies in Etown and start cold calling them.

Any of you guys around whyte ave? Im staying in the Commercial hotel

Well you shouldn't have a problem getting laid in Etown then, staying above one of the seediest bars in Edmonton, Blues on Whyte haha, we all ended up there last time I was in Etown.

Sounds good but Im trying to stay away from the bars and clubs for a while my first 3 days here was all drinkin so im gonna lay off that for abit now get things sorted out.

Are you guys watching this show called "Licence to Drill"? It's about a group of guys working on rigs all over Alberta. From the looks of it, the guys are pretty cool and chill with the newbies, which is quite the opposite of all the horror stories I heard when talking to guys when I was in Edmonton last fall.
So what's the scoop when it comes to working on a rig? How physically demanding is it? And how badly are the new guys treated on rig?

Irish, good to hear man! I'm following this very closely. I'm totally not sure what to do: one part of me wants to be on the first plane to Edmonton and work there for a while and another part of me wants to keep hustling at my online biz. Ah decisions decisions!
