We have our issues where I live but this kind of thing would be unlikely. The little woman they attack could easily be a person who would defend herself with the firearm in her pocket. That is always in the criminals mind. Even though our statistics can look bad the scumbags here seem to attack each other and the regular folks are left alone. Even our police chief was on TV recently saying that the violence is a small known group killing each other and not the populace.
I'm not familiar with the laws on open/concealed carry pre-1996 but I'm pretty sure that it wasn't at all common to walk around town with a gun on your hip. At most people in towns and smaller cities might have had a gun rack inside their ute but that that was about it.
Home invasions on the other hand were relatively unheard of, since a lot more people owned guns, their guns weren't typically locked away and there was zero societal sympathy for any animal capable of assaulting a family in their own abode.
Regardless, being swole is not going to be relevant against 200 Africans with bare fists, much less knives, machetes and bats. Arguably a gun might convince them to scatter, but under pre-1996 laws these savages would also be running around with guns. Currently guns can be gotten illegally but you largely need to be a middle-class criminal with reasonable contacts to afford anything useful.
From what I've been told by older shooters, at least in Victoria, concealed carry was permitted for people like the police commissioner and more commonly for jewelers, but definitely not for the plebs.
Personally I see the 1996 gun laws as marking the end of personal responsibility in Australia and the start of victim culture like the SJW types. While I will give Howard the recognition of being a brilliant politician, I reckon he gutted much that supported what's seen as Australian values and it's now a country that's no longer a nation, if that makes sense.

RE: The Australian politics thread
The one thing that pisses me off about my 'fellow Australian's' is that their smug arrogance every time a US Mass shooting occurs. Contrary to popular belief, we have a shitload of guns.
If a 'crazed lunatic' wanted to stock an arsenal and 'go nuts' - Nothing is stopping a Port Arthur Massacre happening again. That is an out and out myth.
What the US have that we don't is an extra 300 million people, a shared border with a 3rd world nation smuggling drugs and illegal weapons enmasse, no health care and a 300 year head start on the decline.
What Australian's need to be taking note of is population growth. Half my family live in the states and it's not even debatable that Australia is superior in virtually every area. Problem is, with left wing immigration policies, our entire nation can go to the dogs by the time we have grandchildren.
The desired growth by the labor party is 60 million by 2050. Can anyone imagine Australia with three times the population, all living on the outer coastlines of Australia, all crippled by unaffordable housing, with a government unable to afford 'health care' due to rapid population growth whilst at the same time, completely adverse to industries which contribute huge chunks of cash to the GDP I.E: Mining.
That's what we're facing, and not only that, the immigration background will be dictated by a majority Labor/Greens government unless something drastically changes. So of 40 million people, we would be looking at close to 30 million Non-white, Non-Christians.
It's this arrogant smugness which has crept into the everyday Australian that is going to fuck the nation for our grandkids. At our current rate, even with a perfect border defence system [A natural island], we're projecting to burn our nation to rubble a good 250 years faster than the US.

Yes I feel Aussies and Kiwis are very delusional about what's happening. They "feel safe" in Aus/NZ and "feel unsafe" in the US even though statistically if you're not in a ghetto/gang ridden area you're generally safer in the US.
Aus/NZ have got a great ability to make their people feel safe(though they are pretty safe by virtue of being a Western/Anglo country, but not necessarily as safe as they're lead to believe). NZ in particular has tourists robbed so often when they go outside the safe areas that the German tourist department has to issue warnings, yet Kiwis delusionally assume NZ is much safer than everywhere else.
There's probably also the media hype about guns/shootings in general. People don't actually seem to appreciate how rare shootings are. But some random bogan king hits(bogan slang for sucker punch) someone and people brush it over.

Any Australian that wants to sit out the neo-diversity rollercoaster ride (to be completed in 20XX) should move to Tasmania. From here we'll be able to launch Vikang raids on Somalian fishing villages in the coastal suburbs where Melbourne used to be.

You are aware that shooting home invaders with a gun isn't an argument for self defence in Australia, right?
http://www.firearmownersunited.com/2017/...melbourne/
I'm extremely familiar with the legal(ish) use of firearms for self defence in Australia.
1) Certain folk "known to police" shooting other certain folk "known to police" get charged, even if they were at home, and even if the charges wont stick, because it allows the police to disarm them entirely.
2) A number of people have used firearms to defend themselves during a home invasion and were never charged. The difference can often depend on the specifics of the attack, the steps the shooter took prior to the shooting and also how sympathetic the shooter is to the public at large.
3) The law does not provide for you to obtain a firearm for the purposes of self defence but it also does not rule out the use of any deadly weapon if the victim of an assault has reasonable cause to believe their life is in jeopardy. You obtain the firearm for legitimate sporting purposes. If a Somalian insists on hacking through your front door with a bloodstained machete then you take your sporting implement and you shoot him centre-left chest.
tl/dr? Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6, or worse, end up being one of the 6 carrying a wife or child. And if the shit ever truly hits the fan then it's a bit too late to head down to your local gun store.
Hardening your house is the more important step because it buys you time to ready yourself and proves that the attackers were not being deterred by your defenses and claims that the police were on their way.
Do everything right and in the unlikely event you have to shoot a home invader then there's extremely slim odds you'll see the inside of a jail. Police favour good citizens and public prosecutors aren't apt to create martyrs.

I'm glad you are self-aware of how Australians come across in US media. The US media has long been involved in digging up some anecdotal Australian to interview and guilt the US about gun laws. The comment sections always have that stereotypical Australian, whining about how much better their gun control is as well. I use to think every Australian was severely cucked.
The truth is, if you control for inner city minorities and inner city culture in general, then the murder rate between Australia and the US is much closer almost equal. Depending on the year, 60-70% of murders in the US are committed by non-white/Hispanics. That is a fact that you won't see in the US media often let alone international news.
What is mental health institutionalization like in Australia? The (((ACLU))) has has destroyed the ability to permanently incarcerate severely mentally sick people in the US. My theory on mass shootings is a mix of violent media mixed with the fact we can't commit the loony people in society until after they commit multiple violent crimes.

This will unlikely change Australia's immigration politics, but more bollards and concrete blocks will become part of the local landscape:

Allahu Akbar!
Quote:Melbourne rampage driver is an Afghan immigrant, 32, who was acting as a ‘lone wolf’ when he ploughed an SUV into pedestrians during Christmas rush hour leaving 19 injured including a toddler
A 32-year-old immigrant from Afghanistan was arrested after driving a car through Melbourne crowds
The driver was known to police and has a history of drug use, mental health issues and criminal history
The 32-year-old acted alone, driving a white SUV into crowds of pedestrians near to Flinders Street Station
19 people are in hospital, four are critical and one young child with serious head injuries is stable
A second 24-year-old man was arrested but police believe he has no links with the incident
Witnesses described seeing the car run a red light and hurtle towards the crowds, hitting a tram stop bollard
One witness said: 'It just mowed everybody down, people were flying everywhere'
The incident comes almost a year after the Bourke Street Mall rampage which brought the CBD to a standstill

Possibly the most tragic part of all this is that he was effectively stopped by a bollard. Any other solid object, wall, tree, parked vehicle etc would have been fine.
This is just what they need.
"Just think how much worse it could have been if not for that heroic bollard! You people think immigration control is the answer? Nonsense! Clearly what we need are bollards! Long stately rows of beautiful shining steel bollards lining our city streets as a glorious reminder of the enrichment that surrounds us"
