Forgot to mention there was a band of filipinas trying to get Spirit Maze blacklisted from the Phils, doxxed, making up false rape allegations etc., eventually they calmed down though. But that just goes to show what happens when you lie to girls that you love / want to marry them, then pump and dump.

I always assumed lots of guys in every country do that kind of thing, I try not to worry about it just work on my own game as much as I can. After an intensive search, the police located the surviving Abu Sayyaf members in a cave at Barangay Bacani on April 22 and killed another four. Where did you read about this? It's not the first time I've heard about Filipina forums where they talk shit about specific guys, but I've never found anything when I've searched for them.

I was planning on swinging down south to Davao in December to visit an old friend. In light of recent events, should martial law be extended until then should I avoid going down there? Would there be any restrictions placed on Americans entering or leaving the island? I would expect heightened security at the airport and having to go through military checkpoints. Is there anything else I need to be aware of? He told me they've imposed a curfew for now, but I'm not sure what else will happen. If anyone has any advice or even went to the Philippines when Marcos was still in power I'd love to hea about it.

I was in Davao for a little under 2 weeks this April-May and the nightlife is very subpar. It's been mentioned here before, but many places close at 1am while the rest will stop selling alcohol at 1am but close at 2am. The smoking ban also kinda sucks. I was too paranoid to even vape in public outside of the so-called designated smoking areas.

Anyway, here's my quick trip report:
Nightlife: I recommend Club Echelon. It's the only true club in town. I went to 2 other places that called themselves clubs (Alcatraz and Club Acropolis), but these 2 quite blow. Very few approachable females, and I even saw a bunch of older gay dudes in Acropolis being very touchy-feely with each other. Alcatraz is better than Acropolis, but only slightly because the age of the other customers were younger. I must have been one of the youngest guys at Acropolis, and I'm only in my early 30s. I pulled twice from Echelon though. Just get in around 10pm and you'll be fine. You will probably not be the only foreigner in Echelon though. Both times I went, there were Indian dudes and at least 1 white dude. The pinays I talked to said there are a lot of Indian students these days and that they mostly stick to their own. I did not see them approaching any girls. One white guy I saw was with a group of 4-5 pinays and seemed like he knew what he was doing. Maybe it was one of you!

Mall game: I found gaming the salesgirls in the malls to work quite well. These days there are very few Koreans about compared to when I used to live there and with the KWave trend in SEA, being a young-ish Korean dude worked in my favor. I only saw other Koreans twice in my 2 weeks in Davao. I liked going to the malls in the evening to game girls and getting girls to meet me after their shift ended for drinks (usually 9pm at most malls in Davao). I didn't much like Abreeza though. It's so hot inside compared to the other malls. My favorites were NCCC mall, SM Ecoland, and Gaisano mall.

-NCCC mall is quite small but it has a bowling alley that also has pool tables. I enjoyed taking girls here for a casual date. It's quite surprising how the average pinay doesn't know how to bowl or shoot pool! It's fun to teach them It's a 3min walk to MTS, where you can drink with your girl while listening to live bands on most evenings. MTS is open-air though, so if you prefer AC, it may not be your thing.

-The salesgirls in the SM department store in SM Ecoland were very friendly and receptive to game. There are very few young foreigners here. Most the foreigners I saw were retirees who were already with their gf or wife. So for 20-30s something guys with game, it is easy to game here. Just make sure you don't game a girl who saw you getting the number of one of her coworkers!

-Gaisano mall is located next to many colleges and is always full of young college girls. This mall is great for evening dates. Plenty of food options and there are cafes and nicer restaurants on the top floor. You can see a view of the city from here too. Echelon is also located here.

Many of the girls there are single moms and are probably avoided by the local dudes and as such are resorting to online dating to find a foreign bf/husband. Turned it into a instadate and got her # and later banged her on the subsequent date.

- Starbucks and Coffee Bean proved decent for game too. Most the girls who come to these coffee shops are better off and speak good English. They like to come with their laptops and just while away the time. Perfect for gaming!

I am glad I got out of there before the martial law thing took place.
All in all, I can't really recommend Davao for gaming girls if you are young and enjoy nightlife. I think it's more suited to older dudes who can set up shop here and have more time. However, samal island is a quick 30min trip away and you can enjoy lazy days at the beach and prices are cheaper than in Manila.

Yeah, that's right. But I didn't feel like I was in danger at any time on the island. The resort I went to is called Paradise Island, and I felt safe there. They do have guards there...but not sure if they would protect you when terrorists try to kidnap you! But when in SEA, you gotta be on your guard as a foreigner.

Excellent post lovingseoul. I haven't been to any of the "night clubs" there so I can't speak about those but agree with 100% of everything else.

I was in Davao about 7 months ago right after the Roxas bombing and there were very few foreigners to be seen. The only spot I went to that I felt uncomfortable with was MTS. It just seems too ripe of a spot for a terrorist to cause havoc. The malls feel safer even though their security is all just a show.

The thing I don't like about Davao is pretty much the whole city revolves around malls. Everything is at one of the malls and if you go out 95% of the time it will be to one of them. It is convenient to gab a bite, watch a movie, go grab some groceries, etc. but the malls have zapped the life out of much of the rest of the city.

Some more non-mall places to go in Davao: Crocodile park, Jack's ridge, Davao Baywalk, People's Park. All are kind of boring but are a nice departure from the malls. There are also a handful of off-mall restaurants worth checking out like The Grillery and Outback Grill.

I'll be back in Davao next month and I let you guys know how things stand with the martial law thing.

I would have to agree with your assessment on the "mall life" there, but isn't that the same in many SEA cities? haha

Every time I was at MTS, there was a military and police presence there, so I didn't feel too uneasy while I was there.
The humidity was the thing that got to me most haha.

The other places you mentioned are spot on. There's also eagles park, but it's kinda far from the city (maybe just 40 min drive from city?).
I also recommend a more upscale bar called Huckleberry for evening dates. It's on Rizal street and attracts the "hi so" ladies and gentlemen of Davao because the drinks are pricier than the regular red horse and san mig. Very casual atmosphere but a bit too bright for my taste. They did dim the lights later though. Try the local infused rum and Filipino craft beers there!

I realize I forgot about listing the best locations to set up your base of operations. I stayed in One Oasis condos, just 3min walking distance from SM Ecoland. I liked it because it's a safe gated community with a pool and basketball courts, and it's near a major mall. It is however a bit of a hike from downtown and all the clubs/bars.
There were other condo options closer to the city center, but I liked being a bit away from the loud center.

For those of you who like poker, there's a place called The Metro Card Club that mostly has Texas holdem. They have quite a few tables, and the atmosphere is light and friendly. It's across from Davao Central Bank. The waitresses there can be gamed

I haven't been to the Philippines but I think if they put as much effort into making their streets nicer for shopping and generally walking around as they do into building so many malls, the cities would be much more pleasant. Considering that they were occupied by Spain for so long, you'd think they would have more nice buildings, squares, fountains, and nice things. Most of the nice buildings that I've seen (in photos, of course) are town halls, universities, churches, etc. The rest is largely very downmarket or downright slummy. Come on Philippines, you can do better than that.
