I know that some guys want to attempt to time the market, but buying on dips and dollar cost averaging can be decent strategies though it is also good to have some understanding of Fundamentals in order that you can attempt to know whether you are making a short term (in and out) or a longer term attempt at securing value.

This most recent dip from $2210 to $2050 (about 8% could be considered a buyable dip - even though, admittedly, it can be very difficult to time the bottom of the dip in any kind of meaningful way).

Also, if the price goes up from $600 to $2200, but at no time do you recognize a reason to buy, then maybe you don't really understand or believe in the fundamentals.

It's a strange time to get in because of some of the downside potential of getting in on a rise; however, there does seem to be decent potential for another 2x or possibly as much as a 3x in the coming months .. I really don't think that we are going to get a greater than 40% drop from the current price for any significant period of time..

It would surely be an interesting socio-economic experiment if this were to actually play out in the real world, and to see how it actually plays out - and how the overall market cap and market incentives play out.

Is this what they did with ShadowCash/Particle coin? I read that you could run a SDC node and earn interest on it.

That's correct. Same with Dash, PIVX, and Stratis, to name a few other proof-of-stake cryptos.

Pleasantly surprised to hear someone else mention Particl! I'm VERY bullish on that project, been meaning to post about it for a while now.

It's a decentralized dark web marketplace that uses a privacy-centric cryptocurrency built on the bitcoin code base (plus encrypted messaging and automatic Tor integration). PART holders can earn interest by staking their tokens in their Particl node.

Each of the main concepts alone - the decentralized dark web marketplace and the ultimate proof-of-stake privacy coin - would be a formidable contender by itself.

But together? Oh man. YUGE potential.

It's not on any exchanges yet. The development team is still working on the final touches, although the genesis block is expected any day now.

I assume it will start on Polo given the dev team's existing relationship from when Shadowcash traded there, but we still haven't received an exact list of exchanges. I'd suggest following them on Twitter for the latest updates.

The consensus scaling agreement is broad and vague, but it seems to sufficiently cover a workable solution and terms to implement both segwit and a 2mb blocksize limit increase.

From this description it appears that the 2mb implementation is based on a need for testing but with a target of 6 months from the signing (not from within 6 months of seg wit). Seg wit, on the other hand, has to achieve 80% mining support in order to achieve activation, which is less uncertain in terms of date, but seemingly more achievable in terms of quantity of consensus needed and in terms of getting several of the previous naysayers "on board" - including a representation that they have done a "head-count" and believe that they already have enough support for more than 80% of mining power - which is described as 83.28%

Precisely. Check out this description of the history of dark net marketplaces to see just how badly a project like this is needed in the space.

The dev team originally developed the idea as Shadowcash, and had mostly been working on it (since July 2014) as something of a hobby project, but back in March they all decided to quit their jobs and dedicate themselves full-time to the project.

After consulting with some attorneys, they decided in order to protect themselves from (likely) future legal issues to end the Shadow project and completely start fresh/rebrand. They did a 1:1 token swap with SDC holders, who will be given their new tokens as soon as the Particl blockchain starts up.

While the dev team could have handled the announcement in a better way (most SDC holders were expecting an MVP marketplace announcement, and many "sold the news" when they were told it was a rebranding instead and that the marketplace might not be available until the end of the year), I think it's a smart move in the long run.

While the team can't explicitly come out and say they're building a dark net market for legal reasons, that is absolutely what they're doing. They're marketing it as simply a p2p marketplace that cuts out unnecessary middlemen, but I expect the bulk of their user base (at first, at least) to be selling the typical drugs/fake documents/other typical dark net market items.

(There is a large segment of "grey market" items, like nootropics legal in Canada but not the U.S., that will also likely play a large role, for what it's worth. And honestly there's no reason why a small business owner wouldn't want to sell through Particl, regardless of what the product is.)

They are, however, building into the system a consensus voting mechanism to allow the community to self-regulate itself, which is another reason I'm bullish on the project. I imagine that most PART owners (myself included) would have no problem with someone selling say, pot or cocaine, but would be quick to vote down/blacklist something like child pornography.

Hopefully this self-governing system eliminates the worst parts of a typical dark net market, while leaving the "victimless crime" type of products available for purchase. That should go a long way towards fending off government/police attacks, at least while Particl is still small and growing.

By the way, at the risk of deviating too much from the bitcoin topic, in theory, this bullish news about bitcoin should have a bit of a reverse correlation on the price movements of various alts - especially those alts that rely on bitcoin is broken kind of arguments - yet I understand that markets are not completely rational, and sometimes, it can take a considerable amount of time to price-in the impact of some changes - because there is also a momentum and speculative components that can cause various coins to pump way beyond any kind of reasonable justification (and some would argue that we are beyond that point, but evidence of continued upward movement would prove those peeps wrong).

In other words, even though the news rationally says that one thing should happen (opposite correlation with bitcoin), the actual facts and practice (which seems to be what happened in 2013) could result in simultaneous pumping of all cryptos - and even with alts pumping longer than bitcoin.. which could last for several months - though if we get a kind of head of steam and head up to $5k, I am going to start to get anxious with my finger on the sell button (at least part of my BTC stash).

It briefly broke above $20 the first week of January this year, but didn't fully break that resistance until February 21st. Doubling its market cap took crypto 268 days.

Getting to $30bn took 63 more days (April 25th).

At the time of writing we're at $38.6. If we breach $40 by Sunday we'll have added another $10 billion dollars in less than two weeks.

$10 to $20 in 268 days.

$20 to $40 in ~80.

Who wants to bet crypto doubles again before June?

We're at $81.5 at the time of writing according to Coinmarketcap.com.

Took us 20 days.

With this segwit agreement news in place, we could get another fairly rapid doubling (within a month or two), but I doubt that another doubling would really be sustainable - but who knows? And, really there are devils in the details concerning which cryptos might be included in a calculation of the total and their possible proportions.

We could be in the exponential section of the upwards s-curve that causes 10x.. and then a correction from there? Who knows? 10x for bitcoin could be $20k per BTC which really seems like pie in the sky and likely a need to get past $5k first and $10k second, and the $3k to $5k are seeming more and more plausibly within this particular upsurge in the coming month.. or maybe months if we get a decent correction before $2500?

I've reread the agreement and some of the posts regarding the agreement, and I see that it is a bit of smoke and mirrors, and core is not onboard with this.

These are a bunch of bigblocker roger ver nutjobs who are attempting to change consensus and to attempt to hardfork without having the technical folks of core onboard.

At first, I thought that this was some kind of meaningful agreement, but a hardfork is not going to fly and changiung consensus to a lower level could possibly work with a softfork.. not with a hardfork as seems to be what is being contemplated by the consensus folks at the meeting.

By the way, if these big blocker nutjobs were really inclined towards supporting segwit (as they are saying in their supposed agreement), then we should be seeing an immediate boost in seg wit, no?

Accordingly, so far, I have not been seeing any meaningful change in the segwit signaling - still signaling in the mid 30%..., right?

https://coin.dance/blocks

If this "agreement" were so serious in regards to supporting seg wit (and not trying to force a hardfork or to change governance), shouldn't we see an immediate boost in segwit signalling in order to support the sentiment that 83.28% are onboard with seg wit.. Instead, they seem to be attempting to mislead folks into supporting an unnecessary hardfork .. which is very unlikely to fly with folks who can see through the smoke and mirrors.. .
JayJuanGee 路 2017-05-23 17:36:00 路 #4300
Sorry that I have so many posts on the same topic, but this is a timely issue, and those technical core folks who are against a hardfork are NOT nutjobs.

Luke Jr. posted this suggestion on the topic, and really asserts that 2mb limit is not necessary... which seems to be the genuine reality of the current situation.

My advice remains the same - except yes, if you are buying after a surge upwards, you are more risky..

Anyhow invest over 6 months and then reassess.

Let's say you have a projected total of $6k that you can invest over 6 months.
You have $3k that you can invest now and $3k from anticipated cash flow over the next 6 months.

Therefore, you invest $1k now. $500 per month (or $125 per week on a dollar cost average basis), and you have $2k to play around with to attempt to buy on dips.

Sure you could apportion this in different ways, but you can also reassess the situation after 6 months.

Guys may have some other strategies that involve waiting ... but that has its potential downside too.

Also, in order to get started you have to establish accounts or wallets, and there may be a bit of a learning curve, but you can also learn over the next 6 months as you are getting your feet wet in some kind of way similar to my suggestion.

I'm not sure what you mean. There are at least a couple dozen exchanges that allow you to purchase with credit card.

The threat of chargeback isn't that large given that they have all your info that they need to pursue you and more exchanges know precisely how to handle this now, and the cc companies are quick to see whats going on. In other words, it would be very tough to get away with that type of fraud.

If I tell you to buy I might cause you to lose money.

If I tell you not to buy I might cause you to lose profit.

I would not want to be responsible for either of those scenarios and will therefore not give any advice. But I'm sure there is plenty of posters both in here and on other forums who are very keen on telling you what to do, how to spend your money and exactly how to do it.
