There's something wrong with your phrasing here.
It's like you are trying to lump ideas together, and you are vague.
Bitcoin and other coins?
Let's talk about bitcoin, no?
And, if you are going to suggest that it is a pump and dump like some other coins, then what are you talking about?
Sure, I understand that you might have a lot of criticisms of bitcoin (some criticisms may be more warranted than others), but come on with the vague generalizations that don't even seem to be anywhere near accurate.

Bitcoin came about in 2009 - and took a couple of years before it spread out to a small community of users... so yeah, maybe around 2011 or 2012 you are suggesting that bitcoin was providing some options that were not available in other places.
And, you are correct that nothing had ever existed like it before, and bitcoin solved the byzantine general's problem through proof of work.. so yeah.. that solution is still present in bitcoin, and today, there is stupendous mining power backing bitcoin (exponentially more than 5 years ago).. but really, you refer to some glory period of bitcoin 5 years ago, but there are more use cases for bitcoin today than 5 years ago, there is more adoption, development and investment.
Sure some things are the same too such as having a decentralized secure and immutable way to store and transfer value (that part is the same)
(05-25-2017 12:40 PM)Satoshi Wrote: Today, the technology isn't as impressive anymore. Because technology changes quickly and in five years bitcoin has gone from being the latest to being the oldest.
Nothing wrong with growing older.. It is not exactly stagnant as you are suggesting.
A lot has happened in bitcoin in 5 years, including the price has gone up from about $1 per BTC to over $2400. That is a 2400x increase in how people value it. Nothing to sneeze at.

In theory a lot of things can be better, especially if you are assuming.
In practice, there is no other crypto that currently offers a secure immutable and decentralized system for holding value and transferring value like bitcoin. You can refer to coins generally, but each of them have their distinguishing aspects that may complement bitcoin, may get absorbed into bitcoin or may become a competitor of bitcoin, possibly some day.
Some folks, such as you, want to lump all of this together and to suggest that these are all competing or that they are some kind of threat to undermine bitcoin, when the fact of the matter is that there is a kind of symbiotic relationship that seems to be evolving in regards to some of these coins.. and some are going to die out..
It could be that bitcoin dies out, but I would not be too premature to write its obituary merely because you want to engage in theory rather than actual facts.
(05-25-2017 12:40 PM)Satoshi Wrote: Only in theory? Yes, bitcoin still has a few advantages, but those advantages is only there because bitcoin was first.
don't over simplify.
if bitcoin were really infererior, adn there was some way to transpose or depose it, that would have likely already occurred and would not have been accompanied by a 10x bull run in the past 20 months that has not yet ended....
whew.. has been a doosie of a run in the past 20 months, and it is not over yet... hang on boys!!!!
We can't really know how far up we are going to go or even if this is the beginning of the end, but it seems that we remain in the bull trend with a decent sized correction..
So far the correction was nearly 20% from $2,760 to $2263. I am not sure if it is over yet.. we could get another 10% or another 20%, but it seems that the buying pressure remains great and we are likely not at the end of our bull run, just yet.
(05-25-2017 12:40 PM)Satoshi Wrote: But looking at the disadvantages, it is clear that bitcoin won't hold its position as number one much longer and as illustrated by statistic on coinmarketcap.com, bitcoin is already loosing it's position
I am not sure if it matters? maybe 20 years from now or 50 years from now, there may be some evolution to one crypto.. but in the meantime there are a lot of cryptos.
(05-25-2017 12:40 PM)Satoshi Wrote: and it will, in a few years, be forgotten.
I doubt it. You are suggesting that some other cryptos are going to take it's place and bitcoin will start to lose value, at some point? Yes, in theory in theory..
but right now, we have growth and adoptions in bitcoin, it does not appear to be dying or shriveling in any kind of way. Even if we have a 50% correction or more and stagnation below $1k (which does not seem too likely with the ongoing adoption and develpments)
(05-25-2017 12:40 PM)Satoshi Wrote: In the same way that no one is using Windows 98 or iPhone 3g anymore, people will stop using bitcoin, too.
You mean stop using for a payment system? Or stop using for a secure immutable storage of value?
Maybe, but until then, we are on a bull run with growth and adoption and price appreciation..
(05-25-2017 12:40 PM)Satoshi Wrote: I'm not saying that it won't increase in price anymore, it probably will, but this time it's not going up because of the tech, it's going up in pure pump and dump style.
Again you seem to be missing something if you are referring to pump and dump.
(05-25-2017 12:40 PM)Satoshi Wrote: And one important note is that to be able to trade many other coins, one must hold bitcoin.
Oh really? There must be some value in that, no?
Are there some changes on the horizon in that regard? I do see more and more exchanges adopting other alts, but bitcoin still seems to remain the main one, no?
(05-25-2017 12:40 PM)Satoshi Wrote: One can only speculate how small market share bitcoin would have if it was not for the fact that it is the medium of exchange for all those other coins.
Who the fuck knows? And does it matter? You know since this is a symbiotic relationship, don't forget the other side of the formula. If it weren't for bitcoin, a lot of the other coins would not have seen any light of day.
So, yeah, these factors play off of each other and we cannot just spin the facts in one direction without considering the actual implications from other angles, too.
(05-25-2017 12:40 PM)Satoshi Wrote: One day bitcoin will not be the medium of exchange between other currencies anymore and that value will be lost in bitcoin, in the same way that bitcoin already lost value in many other areas when superior technologies have been invented.
Yes.. sure.. some day that could happen, but until then, there is a lot of excitement going on, and some folks may have been able to buy in on this dip.. and maybe if we continue to dip, then more folks will feel comfortable to buy in, too.
Lots of interesting things going on in crypto, and bitcoin is surely a major part of that excitement..and we will see how these various coins will play out.. maybe a couple of years, as you suggested, we will see some decent changes regarding which coins are important or not important and whether bitcoin has a space in that or not..
In the meantime... BUY, BUY, BUY!!!!!!! haahahaha
don't consider my excited utterance as investment advice.
