Wow. I just received an email this morning from airfarewatchdog.com. This $528 price (on China Airlines) is the best deal that I have ever seen for a RT flight from L.A. to Manila. I just confirmed that these flights are currently listed on Expedia (just to cite one example). What a deal.

I assume that flights are also available from other U.S. cities.

Actually there were $400 fares to MNL I believe via Eva Air a couple days ago. But $500 fares are quite solid regardless.

On the topic of islands, I just spend four days or so in Mindoro, which is the island just south of Luzon. Its more a place to go with a girl, as its got a sizable bar girl population which will crowd out, to some degree, a transient guy from finding a local girl (who doesn't want to be mistaken for a pro). However, hang around a few weeks and it would undoubtedly be little problem to get into a relationship-type situation. Its also a decent scuba destination (better than Mabini, which is close to Batangas on the Luzon side).

Mindoro is cheap - hotels in the low season about in the 25-35 dollar range and include breakfast.

Getting there is simple, a bus from Cubao or as I did, Buen Dia bus terminal, two hours later you're at the Batangas Pier. Take a ferry for 90 minutes to Sabang (the nightlife, bar girl area) or Muelle Pier (basically, the town of Puerto Gallera). Whole trip will cost less than ten USD, and its pretty comfortable, buses having AC and the ferry being a catamaran with protection from rain, wind and sun, but enough breeze when its moving.

Hey Dagnasty great that you're checking hitting up Manila! Have you been to Iloilo or Bacolod City? I'm planning to stay in Phils for a few months over winter and curious about these places as they not on the usual Manila Cebu plans of most foreigners (especially brothers). Also I'm looking to play a lot of basketball while I'm in the Phils do you have any tips for places to play in Manila or elsewhere. Any advice appreciated bro, hope your stay in Manila is eventful!

Iloilo sucks, I wrote about the city when I visited over three years ago in 20nations Philippines thread. The city has no redeeming qualities except that you'll be one of the few foreigners but like most places where no gringos go, there's a reason for that. Another RVF guy went there against my advice, his plan was to stay for a month, I think he lasted about four days before coming to his senses and relocating to a better place.

I have been to Iloilo and what Scotian said was correct. You will be the only foreigner there. Not a good place for a newbie. There will be very little to no quality western food available.

When I went, there was no traffic lights operating in the city center, and the SM had just opened.

I wouldn't recommend going there unless you're familiar with the Philippines, or you know someone there you can trust.

Pickup was easy enough, as it is anywhere. I stayed a week and had a different girl every day. There is a very nice bar area which reminded me of college bars in the USA. Very walk-able.

As for avoiding foreigners, you can do that anywhere in the Philippines by going 10 kilometers away from Fort Bonifacio, Makati, Cebu, Davao, or Borocay.

I visited Bacolod city during the MassKara Festival a few years ago and didn't like it much. The city is pretty run down and not much to do. Sounds like Iloilo would be even worse though (I haven't been there). From my experience the best route is to stay a while in Manila and then travel to some of the paradise island destinations (like Palawan) together with your favorite girl after that. My viewpoint is thus pretty much the same as many others have already voiced in this thread

I see cheap Chinese airliner tickets all the time for NYC to BKK. Apparently it's at the expense of some comfort lol.

How do you guys feel about the budget Chinese airlines? I've read some reviews that were all over the place. I'm not a picky guy. It's just ~48 hours of my life. I prefer to save the cash.

I flew from Vancouver to Guangzho en route to BKK and loved the fact that they had smoking rooms there, it was like going back to a saner time where smokers could light up on a lay over. That was in 2012 though, I'm not sure if they still exist over there.

Scotian is 100% right.

Iloilo is the worst place I have ever been to, as far as air pollution.

The children had small wet towels on their backs, and I thought that was odd, I didn't understand immediately what they were for, until I saw the women cover the babies' faces with them. The women were using the small wet towels as a filter to hep the babies breathe cleaner air.

There are no traffic lights in Iloilo, so traffic is a constant stop/go, and the place is extremely densely populated, so you're essentially entering a bubble of petrol fumes. Also, because of no traffic lights, crossing the street is a test of faith. Some folks don't make it. On the plus side (relatively speaking), everyone's going at not-so-fast speeds because of the stop and go nature of their traffic, so if you do get hit, it may not be fatal.

After the first day, I didn't want to leave my hotel, to avoid breathing in the Iloilo air, but I did it anyways, I had to explore.

If I die of lung cancer, I know where the cancerous cell's mutation started.

Appreciate all the insight on here, I might make a quick stop there just to check it out, but as for a base I will look elsewhere. I might just post up in QC Manila do some daygaming and online for a couple weeks then check out different islands with a decent 18-22 yo .

The thing is I will be traveling with 2 groups of families(only 1 of whom I know) over the xmas break for 2-3 weeks, so we may end up checking these places out anyway (i.e. Puerto Princessa and Bohol). If you go to Bohol i'd recommend not spending too much time on Panglao island and exploring the main island instead. Panglao is very touristy with few decent public beaches (mostly resort walled off) and 2-3 days max to see everything there is to see on a motorbike. I was with a girl already but from what I saw girl quality was not good there either.

Scuba is mediocre from Panglao island. Balicasang is fairly boring and so is the other nearby island.

Unfortunately, I went during off season and diving day trips to Cabilao weren't happening either.

The best beach on Panglao is at south palm resort and you have to stay there to access it.

Would Dumaguete be nice for a few weeks stay? Or is it too small and only worth passing by for a smaller amount of time? Heard infrastructure is ok there.

It depends what you're looking for, if you're going to chase lots of women then it may let you down as its a small city and there aren't too many young foreigners so girls could see you out with others and the night life is pretty low key. I spent a couple of weeks there, did some diving, toured around on a scooter to different water falls, hit up some beaches, went to the movies and still managed to hook up with a few local girls. I could definitely stay there for a couple of months but it would be to focus on non-pussy chasing activities like diving, hitting the gym, studying online, etc. Dumaguete is a nice spot, clean by Filpino standards, cheap, fairly well organized and easy to get around in.

In Bacolod, Imoto Ice at Lacson St. is the club to go. It starts rocking after 12am. The quality of the crowd definitely improved once they started the cover charge on weekdays. It gets pretty wild some nights. Just watch out for the lady boys and pay for play girls.

On average, are philipinas open to rough sex on the first time?
For example, with all brazilians I banged, gagging, slapping and choking on our first time having sex was normal. No big deal, the girls loved it and it seemed almost expected.

With the asians I've experienced (chinese and japanese), when you try this type of stuff on the first time they get uncomfortable and if you push it they shut down. It seems they need a few more nights of sex to slowly warm them up to that. I had very few experience with asians but it seems generalizable as this behaviour is congruent with their shy personality.
