RE: The Russia Thread
Myself and my travel buddy took a train ride east from Moscow and have landed in a strange republic famous for, well nothing. Even Russians in Moscow were unsure of where it is or if it even exists. The buildings are topped with golden spikes no doubt an architectural throw back to the time when the tribe first crossed the Volga and set up their tent poles in the fertile ground here. The people speak a language of guttural sounds unrelated to practically any other. They have their own histories unknown to the rest of Europe. A history of kings and traitors, poets and painters and in more modern times rocket engineers and party henchmen doing dark things in dark dungeons. The people are incredibly friendly. And that brings me onto my point...

Since when did Russians get so fucking awesome? Random women insisting on selfies with you, groups of students crowding around you laughing at everything you say in supermarkets, dudes in clubs wanting to hang out and buy you drinks, girls inviting you to their cities to party with them, people smiling and helpful everywhere...WTF. I would say I know Belarus and Ukraine as well as pretty much anyone and considered Ukrainians especially to be friendly and polite. Then I touched down in Russia after a hiatus of three years and...

Mindblown

After Moscow Kiev will appear what it is in reality: a provincial city with provincial attitudes. I actually have a great fondness for Kiev and Ukrainian people. But after Moscow in particular you realise what Kiev lacks and that is a hedonistic party going population who like to get drunk and let loose in non pretentious bars. Moscow has pedestrianised streets with bars and restaurants where people stand outside in the sunshine and mingle and chat and flirt and have a great time. Us who know Kiev talk about D'luxe being a good club. However D'luxe would be the most boring club in Moscow with the worst attitudes.

Anyway I have a train to catch to another republic soon from where we will hire a car and drive across the Urals and into Siberia looking for more adventure in this incredible country.

Ukraine is good. You can have fun there and I shall spend the summer there but Russia...

With your location set on Brazil I would probably start looking there at first like Rocha also mentioned.

Other than that I would flight to St. Petersburg/Moscow or Kiev.

@WUV
If you are going out night alone in Russia or Ukraine, a good advice is not to get drunk at all.
Well, good that you are well and “survived” this attack, then it could be even worse.
You are lucky that these thugs dint put roofies or similar stuff in your drink, then in this case you probably wouldn’t remember what happened at all.
Did the cops get they guys? That would be really great. And yes, anti American resentment could be behind this ambush as they saw your passport at the entrance and the bouncers (who knew who you are) might be under one roof with the attackers.

And speaking about thugs, just another "normalno" graffiti in Moskvie:

RE: The Russia Thread
First of all, I am glad WUV didn't suffer any harm from that ambush.

I think some of you guys need to read what he said. The bouncer came and got him, told him to leave. As soon as he left, the thugs attacked him and put him into a cab.

So obviously the bouncer was in on it, he would have know that WUV was american.

He then ended up at a ATM machine, which sounds like they thought they were going to be able to get easy money.

This could have happened to anyone on this forum, dude is 250 llbs.

Guys giving lame advice about boxing stances and crap from other sites.

This ain't the West, this is Russia. I have never been there but I know those guys don't fuck around.

Finally - The Ligurian has surfaced again. This forum could use more of his tales and less of the political nonsense.

No update, other than I have healed from my injuries. I have a pretty bad scar on my foot, but my face healed fine. I have a little more to add on the story once I leave the country in a few weeks and return to California. I'll leave my parting thoughts on Russia after my year here and close the story when I do. There are a couple more details to add. I'm looking forward to going home.

@rudebwoy
Solid post. Thank you. Pretty much my thoughts, just didn't want to say it myself.

Why this?

I mean if you are in an unfamiliar environment I would say this is a solid advice. Vronski no offense, I already repped you because of your solid advice you gave in the Ukraine thread but a small explanation would be great.

It is a solid advice. Specially if one does not speak the local language. Players with good game dont need to get drunk in order to get that киска. It is even counterproductive.
But hey Vronski, you dont have to follow it, good luck with the night Gopniks lol

RE: The Russia Thread
Now my 2 cents about pepper spray and teasers that some guys posted before: First of all, for the streets it is ok. But you will not be allowed to enter such clubs with such weapons, even if they are small these bouncers have a nose for it. Most likely you will get a ban for that place, and they dont need to remember your face as there are hidden cameras everywhere. Besides, in a conflict situation like WUVs, this would be a limited help because it was a planned group assault on him, so basically you can tease one of them, but the others would jump right on to help the other gang member. And such cowards always work in group of at least 2. Like someone already posted before "Forget most defense techniques from the West".

I don't have much to write about really.

This has been a scouting trip to find a cool city to return to later in the summer. Been traveling to a new town each day and getting drunk each night pretty much. It's been awesome. Currently in Siberia. Will probably hit the Altai Republic on Monday to have a few days of detox and see some awesome scenery. Back in Moscow for the weekend btw so hopefully you'll be there to meet up for a few beers and swap some tales.

I was thinking about this. I think both of you have good points. The advice you take here is dependent on your risk tolerance and available control measures to control the risk. For me, I thought about my experience (multiple FSU countries visited, 9 months in RF) my size and knowledge (250 LBS, 4 workouts per week with combat experience and ground fighting practice to add to this), my reluctance to start trouble (I would rather a Russian hit me than be accused of trouble and go to jail... I have been to US jail before and don't want to experience a Russian one), my situational awareness (I typically sit in places with good spectrum of view). I felt these were enough control measures. Obviously I failed in the buddy system and low or no alcohol. For me, these were acceptable risks given I was in the first ring of Moscow. Sure, we could all eliminate risk in these circumstances, by just sit at home watching TV in our home country with a beer and be safe. BUT, in order to experience life, we must accept some risk. How much risk is up to you. For me, I prefer to take chances. After my convoy was bombed in the middle east and receiving fire on occasion, maybe my risk tolerance is a little higher than worrying about some gopnicks. But yes, solid advice is to drink water when going out. You will be fine and all your interactions will be genuine and clear.

One last thought: I was punched in the face and arms by a taxi driver who tried to tell me a 10 minute drive was 2,000 RUB. Because I couldn't barter with him in Russian, he punched me several times in the face and arms. I sustained a few bruises and my jaw is sore after a week but didn't fight back. Could I have killed the guy.. yes. But I was with a girl who I just bet at the bar and didn't want to scare her as we were about to bang (mission success). This worked to my success as she saw me as a safe guy who wasn't angry like "other guys." And actually it was fun to see him get in his car as I was laughing about his little punches. "Come at me bro," I said from my side of the street. No bullshit. Duder got back in his car and drove away when I asked him to please hit me again. He got zero fare for trying to screw me. I got a sore jaw.

@Ligurian: you could write about nothing and it would still be interesting. What RVF really needs is story tellers. You are one of them. Tell stories, they are far better than "advice". Someday you and I will be back in the west frothing at the computer for members to share experiences. Let us contribute while we can. See you next weekend. My LTR will be on ice for our fun.

RE: The Russia Thread
I drink one or two beers myself when i am feeling like it, or even a shot of whiskey. But never reach the point of losing control my actions/guard.
And frankly, actually I dont care what adult males do in their recreational time, that said... Guys, get drunk! Drink all the vodkas you can find, lol like one guy posted " to each its own." Do whatever you like to do to have fun.
Anyways sometimes I am glad to see many guys drunk (specially Russians) and their not drunk girls, one by one getting bored of their uncool jokes or scandalous behavior. Then it's time for a good ol' game, a potum game over. Ochin просто.

I think that finding a russian girl who doesn't drink (and who isn't able to drink like a cossack), although presumably possible, is quite difficult. Not that I am looking for lol.

Also, from my dating experience, if a girl says she doesn't want to drink, then sex is probably not on the menu. She probably just wants to "be friends", and she is just sending the message that she is not available to let herself go for you ...a pretty clear message ..... and keep in mind that a girl who doesn't drink with you is not necessarily a girl who actually doesn't drink.
