I'm creating this thread for people who are interested in learning more about Drum & Bass or just for those who have not heard much of it (besides the cheesy mainstream stuff) and might find another genre of music they can come to love.

I've been an avid listener for over 10 years now and for me it is more than a genre of music it has helped me to get to where I am now and continues to help me through any issues I have in life.

There are tons of information online to the origins of Drum & Bass / Jungle so instead of repeating information (There's a great video on Youtube that goes into the history of Jungle and how it started, as well as how it eventually formed into what we can Drum & Bass today)

Now onto the important stuff.

Drum & Bass has multiple sub genres within it which have a drastically different sound. (These are my opinions on these sub-genres as people like to create more but at the end of the day they fall into 1 of these 5)

Now bear in mind a lot of these producers and labels do not solely stick to one sound within Drum & Bass but I think these will be a good starting point for those who are interested in digging deeper.

Liquid / Liquid Funk:

This genre is the most organic in my opinion, consisting of beautiful melodies usually accompanied by vocals. (The kind of stuff I listen to when I'm winding down or at a place that needs a little pick me up but keeping it mellow enough to be able to dance to)

Labels to look out for : Liquid Brilliants / Fokuz Recordings / Hospital Records (Slightly more cheesy nowadays in my opinion but some absolute gold in the back catalogue) / Creative Source (DJ Fabio's label) / Signature (Calibre's label, undoubtedly the most loved and influential producer in the game) / Soul:R (Marcus Intalex's label, another major player in the scene) / Basswerk (One of my favourite labels of all time, check out the Basswerk Sessions CD's the variety of sound and great tunes on it are worth the price tag) / Liquid Drops / Soul Deep / Soul Trader... John B is my favorite DnB artist.

If you have a chance to go to a party where he is performing, you should. I was sitting on a couch one time, trying to catch my breath after some vigorous dancing (well, mad flailing really), he sits on the couch next to me, some girl just mounts his lap and starts making out with him, it was amusing.

I'm also a fan of Marky, Andy C, Bad company and a few others. The genre pretty much took over the nightlife in the town I lived in through college. I can't say I followed it too closely after it died out years later.

I enjoy dnb music more than any other genre. John B is good. Been rinsing a lot of his stuff on his fairly recent EP. Marky is decent. So is Drumagick. I'm on my phone at the moment, but when I get on my desktop, I'll be listing my favorites by sub genre.

In the meantime, check out Gang Rule by Ulterior Motive. Silly stuff.

I'm not really a fan of DnB. Much prefer Jungle music. Which is very similar in music style - in fact it is practically the same.

What I found most interesting is if you were to take the basic 4/4 music bar and extract it over 4, 8 or 16 bars and play it at varying tempos you will find a huge range of music subgenres. Example 90 BPM is Reggae, 105 BPM is Old Skool Hip Hop, 130 BPM is UK Garage and 180 BPM is Jungle/DnB.

Changing instruments and BPM you get a huge range of genres and all stem from the same syncopated beats. Example in most music genres the emphasising notes take place on Beats 1 and 3 whereas with all above takes place on 3 and 4. Which makes it sound off beat.

It is amazing the similarities between multiple music genres.

John B is a strange but great fella, his whacko hair do's and 80's style really set him apart from anyone else in the scene but he knows how to make some real bangers. I'm particularly fond of Red Sky, I must have abused that tune back in the day for weeks.

Absolute stomper of a tune Gang rule is. I forgot to mention Marky, I had Butterly (FT XRS) come on while I was just out listening to my driving playlist. He's a really nice guy from what I've seen of him in interviews and that whole picking up the turntable and scratching it upside down always makes me think there could be a moment when a 1210 reaches it's death ha!

Glad you got some value from it dude, I use to listen to a lot of Jungle (Mainly Moving Shadow) back in the day. from time to time though I do go on a Foul Play/Omni Trio binge as back then you can really tell there was an insane amount of passion for the music and how difficult it was with the technology to create it.

Drum n bass is great when done right. My favorite electronic genre is acid house but DNB is right up there.

I'm an EDM freak. Used to be big into trance then branched off into deeper genres, not that I don't still enjoy a good trance toon.

I was downloading hundreds of GB of music through private trackers trying to weed out the best music but ended up just subscribing to a tonne of youtube channels of different EDM music and doing it that way. Let someone else filter the bad tracks out first.

Unfortunately anything including and after "Granite" is cheddar to me but it's all down to personal preference.
When I first heard Vault I was pretty blown away and tracks like Masochist/Another Planet/Trail of Sevens still bring me a smile to this day.

There was an incident with one of their members going on "D.O.A / Dogs on Acid forum" saying that they don't care that majority of the scene and it's producers don't like the pop route they're going and if it's such a big deal then the scene is basically "A pig shit" (Or something along those lines) A lot of people just started hating on them for that.

El Hornet is a pretty good DJ though and he knows his shit when it comes to Drum & Bass.

They have significant differences, Jungle is categorized by being heavily if not all sample based and uses "Amen Breaks" and other sampled drums from older funk/other records. It's usually more hard hitting than certain sub-genres of Drum & Bass.

The main way to tell the difference really is in the quality of the production. Drum & Bass now primarily revolves around music synthesis (Creating sounds) where as back in the old day it was about chopping those sounds out of records and creating something.

Thanks for the great post although I sometimes find it tiresome the way the electronic music genre is so ridiculously oversegmented. I ended up adding some DnB to my music collection more by chance than anything else; the Adam F 'Circles' album, but also the great "Home Movies From the Brainforest" by Mocean Worker, for which the cover/liner art is particularly enjoyable.

I remember the first time I heard Commix - Be True in a rave I was blown away. It's a shame but some really talented producers do just drop off at some point. It's hard to make money producing Electronic muisc if it's not robot wobble dubstep for the kids or cheesy DnB numbes.

Dillinja is an absolute king of bass in general, there's a video of him on Youtube back in the day messing around with bass in his studio shaking the walls.

I always wanted to hear Valve sound system the system him and Lemon D created. It's mandatory to wear earplugs when It's the set up at a rave and people I know have passed out from the bass being so over-bearing.

Break is one of the most talented producers in the scene by far, I had recently watched a tutorial of him breaking down his track "Steam Train" the way he produces his releases is so far over my head. Return to Temple EP is hands down one of the best EP's in my opinion of the last decade.

Hearing the mention of Commix gave me the sudden urge to whack this one on, one of the most original and weird Drum & Bass tunes I've ever heard.

Definitely on board with Moving Shadow, I spent the best part of a month searching the internet for a mint copy of DJ Pulse - Stay Calm (Foul Play Remix) on vinyl, ended up costing me £40.

A lot of producers nowadays are doing throwbacks to the old Jungle sound. One in particular I'm very fond of is "Dead Mans Chest" aka "Eveson" he has released two EP's as of recently and both are complete fire. I highly recommend checking them out. (Dreamscapes EP / Nautilus EP)

I've been rinsing atmospheric drum and bass for a while now, which is pretty much dnb 'lite'-- a lot of very interesting sounds that almost have an airy, lightweight quality to the music. It doesn't get much recognition because it's more of a niche sub genre and I thought I'd share. Many atmospheric tracks turn out to be fused with either jungle/darkstep/liquid elements, which is usually a great mark of a producer in the genre. A lot of people feel the need to simply call atmospheric 'liquid', but atmos dnb tends to be more chill and ambient. With all the shitty liquid collabs I'm seeing, there needs to be a distinction made.

If you search YouTube or Soundcloud, Seba & Paradox have a lot of neat collabs and most are atmospheric with the occasional feature from a vocal artist. Probably the best in the sub genre.

Below is some fusion stuff from a small Italian dnb label (Retrospective Records) I found. Very unique atmospheric sounds combined with some junglist vocals.

All the artists above have quite a few collabs and consistently release serious tunes. On a final note, here's something more obscure, but one of my favorites, still atmospheric.

Almost thought it was trap with the snare almost sounding like an 808, but it isn't. Very veratile sounds which made me attracted to the genre in the first place.

Thanks for this info. I really like high contrast, netsky, logistics, but I was having a hard time finding similar artists. Now I know its called liquid funk. Found a pretty good spotify playlist for this.

Some of the harder stuff like camo and krooked or subfocus is good too.

I'm gonna rep you, just opened a whole bunch of music I didn't know was out there.

Hey man, glad you enjoyed the thread! There are some really beautiful tunes floating around within the genre itself. Definitely keep an eye out for the "Random Movement Podcast" he is constantly playing new Liquid tunes!

The only Liquid I know of is the old group from XL Recordings out of England. I dont know what all of that old stuff is even considered, maybe House music?

I needed to bump this thread because I wanted to share one of my favorite tracks. I've been rinsing this for 2 years now. It's a Calibre collab and it is everything liquid SHOULD be, with depth and soul with some sophistication, not these poorly done baselines with a no-name vocalist.
