Ok but emech, my overall feeling is that you think every car is unreliable, with the exception of some "tanks" from the 60-80s. That may be the case, with MB/BMW/Audi/Porsche, whatever, but what can you do if you want a modern higher-end car?

I love the looks of some classics, but I would never own one because I like tech and luxury too much.

I might be able to get my hands on this one:



BMW 318i E36 Cabrio. The guy installed gull wing doors on it too and it has an M sport body kit. It does have a few catches though: 190km+ on the clock and the ad says the engine needs to be looked into; he's asking for 1.5k.

I'd buy it without even considering if it weren't for the engine and wear on the car. Whats the verdict ?

Yeah, no shit. Gull wing doors and the guy admits to the engine needing to be looked at? Pretty much guaranteed the motor is fucked, the guy knows it, and he blew any money he could possibly spend on freshening up the motor on his gullwing doors and other retardation.

That 1.5k will probably cost you 10k minimum. Don't worry, you come out ahead at -11.5k and a car with no resale value!

I just bought a 3.5L 265HP Toyota sports sedan that shares the engine and trans with a couple of Lexus vehicles and a Lotus thing too. It's not going to get any looks on the street but that's not something I want this car for.

It's a 2010 model, cost me approx 7k USD. Someone lost 30k in 5 years and the car is still almost as new condition with full service history from Toyota.

Pretty good buying I think, lots of car for not much money.

My father has a mid 90s Toyota Landcruiser that has done 460 thousand miles. He's trying to get it up to 600+ (A million km and back to zero).

It means they're kind of piles of crap. Take for example the manual transmission in the newer Exige S is attached with an adapter plate and is sourced from a European only 2 liter diesel econobox. They added "sport" ratios to it. It's a royal pain in the ass to source anything but the most basic parts, and many of the systems are designed poorly for what is essentially supposed to be a race car. The suspension on that same Lotus being another example as it's cheap and doesn't perform well at all (versus the option Ohlins). Overpriced and overhyped in many ways but most people don't know any better. Don't get me started on how much higher a "Lotus" version of what is the same exact Toyota part will cost (1.5 to 3 times more expensive and take forever to get).

Your mileage may vary depending on the specific model of Lotus, but I'm not a huge fan.

Lotus are the masters of sports car chassis set ups. Us Brits know what we are talking about when it comes to racing cars (design, manufacture...everything) and Lotus are damn well near the top of that pile.

Lotus have had some significant success in racing and have a rich history, but they're struggling massively right now and I think their more recent offerings aren't all that they're hyped up to be.

I've helped build and setup multiple Lotus' including race-winning and championship winning ones. There's two sitting within steps of me and there will likely be 4 of them by month's end. I'm no expert, but I'm far from "without any knowledge" as el mechanico states (although I think he's just trolling me).

The car is an Australian built Aurion Sportivo. I guess Toyota classes it as at least a bit sporty to put "sport" in the model name. I don't think you get it in the states.

While it's based on a Camry floor pan it has stiffer spring rates, shocks, bigger brakes etc.

Right on the Lotus thing, but you can also get non supercharged Evoras and my car also comes TRD spec with the same supercharged motor.

Well, all I can say is that this side of an Ariel Atom, there is nothing I'd rather pilot speedily across the British countryside than a Lotus.

It's what they're built for and what they're best at.

As for their track capabilities; I can't think of a single track driving school here in the UK that doesn't use them also. There has to be a reason why.

^ Lexus or Hiyundai. Audi S4 from that age will have lots of miles on it and around 80% of then will have been boyraced/worn out. Unless you are close to Germany, official Audi parts/repairs will cost a fortune. Same for the Infinity, if you can't find a good garage/local support for the Infiniti, you will be had with maintenance. Lexus is a lot more common and likely to have not been owned by a boyracer. Though buying a new car is not often a good idea, at least you will have warranty - given that those occasions don't come with warranty.

Having said that, I would pick a proper verified & checked used Lexus over the new Hiyundai. It also looks better and has a better common denominator appeal than Hyundai, given the upper-class branding.

@Laner- Hyundai for sure. They are way under-rated cars. Very reliable. Nice value. Good looking too. If you feel brand-insecure, remove the tags and ppl will think you are driving a 100k car.

Lexus for 2nd.

Skip Audi and Infinti. Breaks all the time. Tons of issues. Not reliable. Infiniti inside is very clunky. Not ergonomically designed.
