The skills shortage myth was deliberately created by the elites to get an influx of foreigners, which results in cheap labor. At least in Germany (even the ARD - state television - did a long report on this) and I can't imagine it to be different in any other (western) European country. German people actually get fired, especially in IT, and replaced by Indians.

Edit: As you cited some sources on doctors: In Germany there is the same narrative being pushed in the media. "Oh no... we need so many doctors". We actually have well enough doctors in the country. It's just that very few want to work as GPs in the countryside, while there are (more than) enough in the city. Maybe it's different in the UK - I'm not qualified to comment on that - but my guess is that it's a similar situation, once again, throughout western Europe.

The reason why doctors leave Canada for the US isn't because the US necessarily has a shortage of doctors, but because of the Canadian healthcare system and there's more potential for money here. I should know because my friend's father is one such example.

When a country has a skills shortage, it should clearly feel the results of the lack of this skill. Then when they do, the government and companies will need to think of how to incentivize more people to learn that skill. Better education, higher wages, etc.

Importing foreign workers reduces their incentive to solve the actual problem. When it is a real, important skills shortage (and not just a storyline made up by big business in order to keep wages down), then importing foreign workers every year would be like taking pain pills because of your aching tooth instead of going to the dentist.

I'm a first hand witness of US health care on the inside and I'll go on record saying I've only witness a demand for nurses. Surgeons, doctors, pediatricans and EMTs are competitively employed. There's some space for demand in paramedics and nurses of each degree.

I have a question about Hungary, if anyone can provide a logical explanation:

Why did Hungary decide to be the first to build the border fence?

It doesn't make much sense considering it's costly and the migrants were only transiting Hungary.

If anyone should be fencing their border, it's Germany and Sweden and other final destinations of the migrants.

You could say they were causing problems in populated areas, but there is already a solution for that, for example the Greek government organized mass transport for all migrant arrivals from the sea shores to the northern border, so the migrants didn't even enter populated areas.

I wonder if there's a higher game with fencing the borders than we're able to see.

Certainly the Hungarian Prime Minister is showing the world and the EU how to act in the best interests of his citizens.

First the issue of doctors. Canada has a staggering level of bureaucracy when it comes to licensing foreign doctors. I witnessed this firsthand a few years ago when my father was applying for a job up there. My father has been practicing medicine for over 40 years in the US. The amount of paperwork and credentialing they wanted was ridiculous. And not only that, they charged a lot of money to do all the background checks. We're talking $15K-$20K is what they wanted. And still no guarantee of approval. Mind you this was for a job in a shitty, remote area where the going salary was in the $300K ballpark for internal medicine. The reason for the high salary was they needed a doctor in the area, and no one wanted the job, so they had to make the deal more lucrative. And from what I've read and witnessed, the doctor isn't due to a lack of talent, it's due to the incompetence of the Canadian government.

As for the rest. Here's how this works because companies pull the same shit in the US. US company creates some job requirement for some off the wall IT cert. It's made known to the various Indian recruitment firms. They sell a bunch of those certs to anyone who can pay. The US IT company then cries "we need more H1B visas issued because lazy, stupid, Americans don't have the technical skills." This cert BTW, is nothing special or new, it's likely just something that is a compilation of two other certs that many US IT workers hold, but with a new alphabet soup lettering and number code. The end goal isn't getting workers with a specific skill set. It's getting workers who work for less money.

There are 300,000,000 people in the US. We're the third most populous country in the world. The sheer numbers game alone says that you can find workers possessing virtually any technical skill you desire without having to look abroad.
