The only foreign city I have travelled to where I left with an unfavourable impression of the locals was Rio. I personally didn't encounter the legendary "friendliness" of the locals that so many people bang on about despite speaking passable conversational Portuguese and not being completely clueless about that country. I was even barked at in a shop in Ipanema for not understanding the rude little bitch on the till first time. Some of the service in restaurants genuinely made me angry; the staff would not speak unless unavoidable to them and they weren't big on eye contact or smiles. Funnily enough, the best service was always with older waiters etc, they knew how to speak, smile and make the customer feel welcome - they were the only ones who got gorjetas needless to say.

Just to round it off at immigration departure at the airport, the cunt behind the desk practically threw my passport back at me after he stamped it (with the avoidance of eye contact that I had come to "love" so much from many Cariocas). That was the icing on the cake and I won't go back to Rio.

This isn't an anti-Brazilian rant, I didn't have these sort of experiences to anything like the same degree in other parts of Brazil on my travels there and overall I would say that generally my experiences with Brazilians were positive. I appreciate Rio would be a different place if you lived there, had connections etc, but for a short term visit from an out of towner - fuck them.

Crazy story but I actually met that US Open guy from that fight in real life a few years ago, b/c his roommate was a friend of mine. This was at least a couple years before that incident, and he didn't seem anything like that. But yeah, dude had bet some money on some of the matches and was on edge I think from the get-go at the US Open. Even tho he was living in NYC, dude was originally from NJ.

Hey Soos, that description of a scene has to be one of the most brutal I've read here. Do you have any idea why this is the case? i.e. Why are a lot of Aussie chicks coarse and entitled, and why is Australia so expensive? Even things like food. You've got a total poulation equal to some big global metros, but a whole freakin continent to make a living from. You'd think at least food and real estate prices would be reasonable, but I've heard that both these are much more expensive in Oz than almost everywhere else.

The only idea I can come up with is that the federal government in Australia keeps an unbelieveably tight leash on absolutely everything that goes on there, and this adds massively to the cost of living. I've watched a couple of episodes of the show "Border Security" and frankly it doesn't cast Australia in a favourable light in this regard. Not that any Aussies would care about this, but still. Also, to be fair "Border Security - USA" would probably be pretty bad as well.

Yeah, the land size to population is amazing. Although the centre is arid, and large parts of it are uninhabitable, there are very, very large green areas along the coast--parts whole countries in Europe can fit into easily.

Australia's landmass = 8,511,965 square kilometres. Population = 20 million.
Taiwan landmass = 35,980 square kilometres. Population = 22 million.

Taiwan has 0.4% the landmass of Australia.
The Netherlands has 0.5% the landmass of Australia and 16 million people.

The market here is very tightly controlled by the government (36k USD minimum wage, ridiculous regulations.) That and a huge housing bubble, our mineral exports, portfolio investment from the surrounding Asian countries and Keynesian government polices (literally $10.4 billion handed out to welfare recipients and dumped on the market in the form of "bonuses" in 2008) have lowered our own purchasing power and made things very expensive for anyone else.

Feminism has taken root here. Australia has been a forntier country until 80 years ago.

Our border security has more to do with quarantine first and foremost. being the last continent to be settled by Europeans, it has the least spread with 'introduced species'.

Oh no, we are Canada on steroids.

I work in finance, and keep up on lot of analysis of macro-economics a lot. One pundit I do pay attention to is Garth Turner, who some North Americans may know, and his views on Canadian housing.

So if you/re familiar with him, what is happeneing in Vancouver and to lesser extent Toronto... is happening in the entire country in Australia.

When commodity prices burst. The sheep here will continue to plow good money after bad giving it to the bank via excess interest payments... then when commodity prices drop, incomes will no longer support extraordinary interest payments, and adjustments will have to be made.

Australia probably has the healthiest fiscal position in the world, and will waste more wealth trying to prevent it.. until we can no longer suport it, and ultimately we will waste away Paul Keating's economic legacy on

Australia is a long way from anywhere, and is expensive.. so you have to be very specific for coming here.

One is the working holiday... and it is good. Backpackers who come here and can hustle can do stuff like cleaning the interior of container ships earning $3,000 per week. So they use is for a period to re-charge the bank account and spend a year or two more in SE Asia.

The sights, well its like if you're a person who is a bit 'meh' about the grand canyon....

"great.. I travelled all the way to see a big hole in the ground.. now what do I do?"

Australia is a lot like that because of its low population.... you go to a place, and that's all there is, with few complimentary attractions.

So back to the great barrier Reef... if you are passionate about reefs and scuba diving, then yes... you have to go to the barrier reef.

That said, other outstadning reefs in the world are the second best reef in the world is on the other side of Australia, called Ningaloo, between Exmouth and Coral bay.

The third can be found off the coast of Oman and you may consider that an option for a reef and scuba diving experience.

It's funny you've heard that about Cairns because my view would be that it is the only logical place to go if you want to go to the barrier reef unless you're a guy who wants to camp in a zero noise environment and do introverted science stuff like take soil samples. Then those remote places make sense.

Cairns also has things like white water rafting and rainforest tours... so it has the complimentary attractions thing I discussed before. It is also full of very loose women. You find more cum on the floor of nightclub toilets, phone booths and park benches in Cairns than just about anywhere else in the world.

Quality is a bit amiss though, too many fat, white anglos, though there are a lot of scandonavians, japanese and increasingly chinese.

Seattle.

We all noticed how shitty customer service was. I don't know if its the rain or just the culture but every fastfood, diner, chain rest, even some of the mall spots seem to have an asshole working there. The women weren't too approachable neither. The shields didnt seem to be high but they werent too open.
