Regarding the girlfriend part, I've made way better connections with girls I've met when traveling than with ones home. And that was traveling for a couple of weeks or even less. I have at least a couple of friends who met their girlfriends while being abroad, and in some cases the girls moved country to be with them.
If it won't matter in 30 years, it doesn't matter now.
