As Linux suggested, there's enough RVF guys scattered throughout the world that at any given time a guy on here could book a flight to Saigon, Medellin, Kiev, etc and be hanging out with a bunch of chill dudes. I was recently in the Mayan Riviera of Mexico and hung out with three other cool RVF dudes for a few days in Playa Del Carmen for example.

There's a lot of lessons here. It's hard to find adventure on Islands, vacation destinations can be incredibly rural, don't plan extended stays with strangers, etc...

For any of my fellow midwesterners thinking about international adventures... HOSTELS!!! You get a bed, a locker, and access to other travelers of varying backgrounds and levels of experience with travelling. Most importantly Hostels offer freedom. If the hostel fills up with weirdos or Irish English teachers because some convention is in town, you can bounce out to another town for the weekend. If the hostel sucks you can bounce for better accommodations. If you get bored, you can bounce. If you need a place to bang, you can get a hotel room. Otherwise, Airbnbs and hotels can be fine, but they lack the opportunities for information gathering that hostels offer.

I'm sure people have had luck with couchsurfing for short stays, but long term stranger (meaning unmet irl and without an introduction from someone you trust) room mate arrangements are asking for disaster. Especially if the stranger is enthusiastic. The poor language skills and imagined famous guru status are red flags, but nothing good comes from strangers who enthusiastically want and bait you to share a roof with them.

Meet people, talk to people, but if an arrangement would obviously be a disaster when a strange girl on the internet proposes it, it is a bad idea when a strange man proposes it as well.

And WTF Discord. It's one of those tech platforms pretending to be a bastion of freedom and full of FBI trolls, if someone says they are a guru and decides to make their internet home on bad tech platforms... ignore them.
