I think you missed the point of Clooney's marriage. After rumors floated about him at Bryan Singer's pedo parties, he suddenly married a "successful and confident" age appropriate woman.

Having read The Game and The Truth, my take away is that learning game for Neil Strauss was like suddenly coming into money - it amplifies your weaknesses and allows one to really take a turn for the worse. Or, as Rollo Tomassi calls this: " children with dynamite." That is, Neil Strauss learned game, but still had a blue pill foundation and  a longing for "the one." This is a recipe for disaster.

As related in his books, Neil Strauss had serious inner game issues regarding his appearance and his upbringing with an overly involved mother, bordering on incest. Further, he twists himself into a pretzel trying to reconcile Disney happily ever after monogamy with his desire for strange and the knowledge that he had the tools available to satisfy those cravings.

In The Truth, the book ends with him getting back together with his girlfriend, yet hinting that he had found some Third Way that would reconcile his two competing visions. You knew this was not going to end well.

It's not even learning to game that sent Neil into a tailspin, what it really is, is him becoming famous. And the influence from that point on that it had on his life. Suddenly he was no longer a music journalist, or an author, he was a larger than life figure who was the lead guru of the pickup movement. He got access to all those high-end circles. And the sex parties, drugs, and other the other trappings of that lifestyle. You start holding yourself to another standard and suddenly many of those constraints that you have in your life that keep you reasonably grounded are no longer there. That's probably how he got to the point of sex addiction. (and i'm sure it was legitimate sex addiction). he became his alter-ego in other words, and at that point he completely lost himself.

As such, it's surprisingly common for celebrities to loose all sense of identity, disassociate from their normal personality because everyone expects them to become the alterego. And then it's never turned off. Like a lot of normal people would do, neil succumbed to his ego. I can't blame him for that. But it's a lesson for all of us to stay mentally strong and never rest on our laurels. Also, Hollywood is toxic.

He is also plagued with insecurity and a by all accounts unhealthy family dynamic, relationship, whatever you want to call it.
