T.M. Landry College Preparatory School in Lousiana made headlines with a series of viral videos showing their students reacting to news that they’d been accepted to Ivy League Universities.

But a new report from The New York Times has exposed the dark underbelly of the school that once boasted “a 100-percent college acceptance rate.”

According to the report, transcripts were doctored and extracurricular activities were invented. Students were encouraged to lie about their family situations in order to make their successes appear even more dramatic. And students and teachers alike described a “culture of abuse” that was widespread.

T.M. Landry rocketed to the top of the news cycle in 2017 when a number of their college acceptance videos went viral. (RELATED: Harvard Dean Defends Race-Based Admissions On First Day Of Trial)

“THE TODAY SHOW,” AS RECENTLY AS OCTOBER OF THIS YEAR, RAN A SEGMENT TOUTING THE SCHOOL’S UNPRECEDENTED SUCCESS.





BUT BENEATH THE SURFACE, ACCORDING TO THE NYT’S REPORT, THINGS WERE NOT SO SIMPLE:
The colleges “want to be able to get behind the black kids going off and succeeding, and going to all of these schools,” said Raymond Smith Jr., who graduated from T.M. Landry in 2017 and enrolled at NYU. He said that Mr. Landry forced him to exaggerate his father’s absence from his life on his NYU application.

“It’s a good look,” these colleges “getting these bright, high-flying, came-from-nothing-turned-into-something students,” Mr. Smith said.

Most students and teachers admitted in a series of interviews with The NYT that parts of transcripts had been exaggerated or even invented in order to make the students more appealing to prestigious universities. But even more disturbing were the allegations of abuse — both emotional and physical.

Students described being “forced to kneel on grains of rice, rocks and hot pavement,” and said that they were often yelled at by Landry himself.

Landry, who described himself as a “drill sergeant,” admitted that he yelled “a lot” and openly encouraged competition among students because “that is how the real world works.” He denied having students kneel in harsh conditions or for longer than five minutes.

One student, Tyler Sassau, refuted that point, saying Landry had forced him to kneel on a bathroom floor for two hours. “I wasn’t going to get up without asking him, because if I did, I could’ve got something worse. I could barely stand when I got up,” he said.

The students who went on to the Ivy Leagues from Landry since 2013 — when the school’s first class graduated — have had mixed success.

I wonder how long it'll be before the free market begins to sort this out. Graduates of elite schools who are visible minorities are likely already looked at with a tinge of suspicion (which honestly makes me feel sorry for anyone that legitimately earned their spot), now there are widespread scandals potentially involving hundreds of students per scandal. Once the corruption masquerading as tolerance gets unmasked by the mainstream that once fostered it (as is the case with the AZNs v. Harvard lawsuit) then free agents such as employers may be seen as justified in scrutinizing certain candidates.

This has already happened and been decried as proof of racism. They had a big study and discovered that resume's with the same credentials but stereotypical "black" names got less call backs. Nobody mentioned your (obvious) explanation, it was all just taken as proof of racism.

I highly recommend reading the whole article Scorpion linked, it breaks down the whole process. At first there was a lot of anti-Semitism at the Ivy's and elite schools, hard for Jews to get in. Post WWII, anti-semitism was less acceptable, Jewish Ivy enrollment rose to an 800% over representation compared to their US population (possibly completely merit based based on their focus on education and higher average IQ). When affirmative action hit, they took a hit along with everyone else. The only difference was that the ADL stepped up, protested it, and called it anti-semitism until admin caved. 800% over-representation became the standard (since that's what they got post WWII) so every time it dipped below 800% they were able to successfully lobby and protest. This allowed them the unique position of widely supporting Affirmative Action in colleges, and sitting it out at the same time. It also made them immune to competition by highly educated Asians attempting the same tactics to use higher education to get ahead.

If you're the only minority group emphasizing education that much to get ahead, 800% over representation is do-able. If you've got other groups following your foot steps doing the same thing in even larger numbers, 800% is no longer doable...without the social controls described above.

If Jews have a higher average IQ, why don't we ever hear about them dominating science/engineering at MIT or CalTech? Asians and Indians, yes.

Jewish nepotism at these elite schools. Simple as that.

Edit: there's a direct causative relationship between the OP and this comment. Most of those top banks hire almost exclusively from "target" schools. These schools are ivy league ones and a few equivalents (like Stanford or Chicago's Boothe Business school) as well as NYU. Service Academy graduates are generally viewed favorably as well. They'll send a much lesser presence to "semi-target" schools that are regionally prestigious (Emory, Duke) however it's much more difficult to get in. To be hired over any Ivy League student you generally need to be strongly preferred by multiple people in the place you're trying to work. If it's close the Ivy League wins almost every single time because the hiring manager won't get blamed for his choice if the Ivy League guy fucks up. They do frequently, because they usually aren't anywhere near as technically competent as the motivated students from other schools who know they have to bust their ass to get in.

Exceptions are few and far between. Some are exceptional networkers (Either be related to a manger/client or have networking abilities on par with Hillary Clinton). Others get in through "diversity" programs (including veterans) or were participating in one of the few good intensive prep cohorts at "non-target" schools. For that category the only ones that I'm aware of are at Michigan and Indiana, both of which are extremely selective and place their participants at tier 1 banks.

Most of the Ivies don't offer athletic scholarships. Usually the better athletes are recruited by the coaches, who secure admissions to student-athletes with decent academic profiles but who wouldn't have gotten in through the main gate.

Actually, none of them do. The only aid provided to athletes is need-based financial aid--a policy that also applies for all applicants and students of Ivy League schools. Of course, athletes usually have an easier time than the rest of the applicant pool because of their sports capabilities, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they're dumb as bricks (although a few still wouldn't hack it normally).


It's also interesting that I quoted a guy ostensibly based in Canada, because several Ivy League schools recruit a lot of Canadians for certain sports (hockey, lacrosse, squash, and a few others).
