Parts of the radio transmissions between the plane and the tower show that as soon as he taxied out to the runway for take-off the tower knew something was wrong. The the tower kept asking him for his flight sign and he wouldn't reply, so the tower 'noticed' something was wrong even before he took off, but there was nothing they could do to stop it.

It's unlikely he had 2,100 lbs of fuel... He had 2,100 gallons. A gallon of Jet-A fuel weighs roughly 6 lbs. He took off with 3000 gallons, which is roughly two hours worth of fuel.

Line service guys like him generally measure fuel in pounds while pilots, and the cockpit indications, use gallons.

WHat a strange story.

There’s something about this that is deeply sad but listening to te guy talking on the audio there is something about his voice that just sounds so normal. Not like a guy who’s about to off himself.

I hope he’s at peace now and that we find out what exactly it was that was troubling him.

Alert missions aren't necessarily run out of big bases. There are advantages to being at a quieter airfield, and often the responsible units are national guard.

An alert F-15 can be off the ground in minutes and then go very fast to the target. The F-15 also has a very good radar and could have engaged from a significant distance. Portland to Seattle would be a reasonable distance (edit: for the total engagement, not for a missile shot).

The rules of engagement were probably to shoot it down if he made a move for Seattle or another population center.

In a number of states, especially on the coasts and near big cities, Air National Guard and AF Reserve units rotate having 2-4 aircraft on homeland defense alert duty. Air traffic control en-route and approach control centers likely have it on their checklist that if they encounter an unresponsive aircraft, an aircraft with unauthorized flight crew, or which has it's transponder on the wrong setting, to notify the military alert field to get launched. I think an alert unit has to commit to having their 2-ship in the air within 15 minutes or something like that.

By the way, it's obvious that the officials redacted large amounts of the audio between the pilot and ATC. Perhaps he complained about unfair social justice nonsense in his workplace, but more likely he talked about his wife stepping out on him or something like that and how his marriage was failing. If that turns out to be the case, then this is the second example, at least, in a few years time of someone crashing a plane in part because of woman trouble, the other being that German pilot who crashed his airliner into the mountains in Europe.
