I know the military keeps planes on standby for emergency situations, but i’m surprised that planes from Portland would be pulled in when you have Joint Base Lewis McChord right there.

Do you think they were prepared / authorized to shoot down the plane if it looked like it was going to hit a building or head for downtown Seattle?

They were very quick and yes, you can be sure islamic and other terrorists are taking notes about how much time it took for them to respond. Also, did anyone see pictures or interviews of either of the F15 pilots? If not, it's safe to say they were not female and more than likely white guys.

RE: Seattle man hijacks an airplane and dies crashing it
Has anyone confirmed that is was his wive leaving him being primary reason what drove him to do this, amongst other issues he mentioned (being a wage slave)?

I kinda laughed at this story the first time I heard it with all the Sky King memes. I threw on R. Kellys "I Believe I Can Fly" and had myself an ode to "BeeBo". He flew good, he flew high. He rolled the best. Rest with the angels Sky Boy.
Comment "f" to Pay Respects. That kinda stuff.

But this story hasn't left my head for days and is starting to resonate with me more then expected. Richard Russel looked had the look of a noble, decent man. He had a few extra pounds on him in his most recent pictures, but for the guys on this forum who preach traditional family values, he looked pretty close to what a a patriarch of a nuclear family should look like. altruistic, a loving husband, and a productive member of society with no criminal record until three days ago. In short, he wasn't a degenerate and he did everything he was told to do.

And yet, I have this deep-seated feeling that he got delt a shit hand, both in his marriage and in his socioeconomic condition and it's making me feel for him. 5 years ago that could have been me. I could easily see myself loosing it over my ex-oneitis and going to extremes like that. He kept it in pretty good spirits (he didn't hurt anyone), but his wife could have very likely branch swung on him and once he came to realization he was replaceable/disposable cog at the bottom of our corporate oligarchy, after all that effort he put in, knowing he was still kinda at the bottom, he decided to call it a night.

Kinda reminds me of Bourdain except from what I hear Bourdain was pretty angry when he went.

"We have members who are pilots and can give solid information on the topic." - Correct, you're talking to one now.

"The idea that someone could just request clearance for an unscheduled flight and they'd get taxi/takeoff instructions/approval is just absurd" - No it is not, that is literally how the system works. I can jump into a Cessna 152 or Robbie 22 on the gen avn ramp at seatac and request a VFR clearance to depart with ZERO prior coordination. I've done this many times from many airports globally. IFR clearance normally needs to be on request 30 minutes prior (although you could file on the ground and annoy the shit out of clearance deliver).

There's no way he was flying that plane if you ask me...or trained pilots.

Tricks for 90 minutes? The guy was a baggage handler! He may have pulled off one fluke move, but not the whole show.

My money's on a Q op. That island was Epstein island #2.

RE: Seattle man hijacks an airplane and dies crashing it
You guys making the case that the system is dismal because white men don't have opportunity or can't buy houses or whatever...

You're missing the point by a long shot. A point simply made by movies like Fight Club, American Beauty, Jurassic Park, A Clockwork Orange, Falling Down, Taxi Driver, among many others.

A coworker came in the other week, I recently added him on Facebook and saw that he does some pretty extreme downhill mountain biking. I commented about it to him since he seemed like a fairly reserved guy. He replied to me, "You gotta do something that makes you scared. It's so important."

Look, I don't disagree that society has become feminized and sick. I get plenty of firsthand exposure to living in the world of HR departments and bureaucracy. But it's not like they're coralling white men into pens and castrating us. Any guy could get a part time job waiting tables in Colorado and spending a LOT of free time hitting the gym, driving a sportbike, doing some extreme sports, hiking, smoking weed, and banging fit chicks. If that's not a sweet lifestyle I don't know what is. OR he could go the other route and slave away at the factory and settle down with a based redpill chick and pop out a couple kids and be the responsible father. Both are possible in 2018.

I suspect Skyking here just tried to play by the rules and be a good guy...but he was sorely lacking danger, fear, and exhiliration in his life.

I also suspect a large part of this story is, as Kona mentioned, the fact that this took place in Seattle.

My best friend, the person I call my brother, a guy I would take a bullet for, currently lives there. The change I've seen in him tears me up inside. I've pleaded with him to move in with me, live in my guest room, until he can get on his feet. Living in Seattle has taken literal years off his life, set him so far back and he thinks he knows but he has no idea. He openly admits it sucks, but he's living there because of a girl, a chick that's not even remotely up to his calibre. It has been infuriating to watch this from the sidelines, but he's my best friend and I'll love him no matter what. God knows how many times I've told him he's a fucking moron and to stop fucking around wasting his life up there.

He was once the most vibrant, vivacious, creative, personable, lovable person I've ever known. It's still in there deep down, still has the spark, but you would never know it talking to him now. When I visited him I could not believe the level of passive-aggression, snarkiness, sheer dick-ish behavior, absolute lack of personality, lack of vibrancy in every single person I met there.

Fuck Seattle. There's a lot of places I dislike, but not many that i hate.

I fucking hate Seattle.

But to finish my thought...every guy needs danger and play. Skyking got it too late in life, but he did it the ultimate way. No rules, no methods. Just a man and his own capacities. It's too bad he didn't figure out a way to flip out and not wind up dead or in jail. A trip to the track and a liter bike, or jumping out of a plane in a wingsuit might have been enough to satisfy him.

"...so I gave her an STD, and she STILL wanted to bang me."

RE: Seattle man hijacks an airplane and dies crashing it
Some places are more nihilistic than others. In the past then the Western culture and mindset was alive and vibrant. The nation states were proud of themselves, they looked into the future with positive enthusiasm, the church gave a moral backbone to each individual, a man knew what was expected of him - get a wife, get married, create a life for himself, maybe leave behind some legacy. The culture was positive and the future was bright even despite a much harder life. Nowadays the core of Western civilization is destroyed - it's all anti-Western anti-White and anti-"capitalist". Everything you ever did in the West was bad, racist, sexist and evil. And the future is more of the same.

The only refuge is rampant materialism and those that don't make it instantly are instantly discouraged.

I think I posted in one of the Travel threads about places that suck about my experience living for a couple of years in that area. It's not just Seattle, but Western Washington in general from Seattle south to the Columbia River. Because of the Cascade Mountains, clouds pile up over western Washington and it's constantly gray skies and drizzling rain. I think they get about 30 days of sunshine a year. It really does seem to affect people's behavior and attitude. I spent my first two years of high school in a smaller town in that area, and they were the most bitter, angry, and despondent people I've ever been around, and I've lived in a lot of places. I would never live there again.

Just seeing this now. Yes, it's so. Glad you're a pilot and can provide insight into the process. However, I was referencing this post on the 2nd page of the thread:

No need to speculate about how it happened if the audio is out there. I haven't been able to find it with a quick search, but this news article appears to support that the tower didn't clear him for takeoff (he wouldn't even identify himself) and so they immediately knew something was wrong:

Quote:He used a tractor to move the 76-seat Q400 turboprop plane 180 degrees before taxiing to the runway, when an air traffic controller repeatedly asked him to identify himself.

Like I said, you didn't do the minimum amount of reading/analyzing before posting and you were intellectually dishonest by pointing out how the air traffic control system works with light aircraft as if that's relevant in your followup.

Others liked your response or posted memes without bothering to do the minor research/reading I did above (and posted sources to).

The negotiator on the ground referred to one of the F-15 pilots as Joel.

The time from first call to radar lock is known and has been published on the internet, but I am not going to post it here. It is impressive and reasonable given how close the F-15s' base is to Seattle.

The F-15 can go very fast in afterburner, even carrying external tanks as in this situation.

Uh, in my aircraft (737) cockpit fuel indication is in pounds. We convert to gallons for the fuel audit if we're not being lazy. Will a dash8 even hold 3000 gallons?

I used light cessna 152s and robby 22s as a reference. I don't actually fly those. I'm glad that's what you focused on. Duke Main however is a 737 guy and can probably provide more of an insight in Part 121 than I can, as I don't operate under FAA regulations and thus don't study in depth as those that do.

What's Part 121 you say? Well, It appears you didn't do the minimum amount of reading/analyzing before posting.

Horizon is a Part 121 operator. Go read FAR Part 121 if you really want to get to the nuts of the source, it's a real page turner. Part 121 aircraft can certainly make VFR on demand flights (maintenance, aircraft transfers, etc). They do not do so very often due to altitude restrictions on VFR flights.

Quote:Pilots of large commercial flights use instruments to fly (instrument flight rules, or IFR), so they can fly in all sorts of weather. They must file flight plans and are serviced by the mainstream air traffic control system

Your source is correct however it lacks context. IFR is required above 18,000 MSL. Large commercial airlines are inefficient at low altitudes and thus always fly at high altitudes. This requires them to always be on IFR flight plans. That doesn't mean they CAN'T fly VFR below 18,000.

Regardless I'm not here to have an FAR debate, I get enough of that during annual evals. My point was this: If a plan is moving on the ramp, and not contacting ground or tower, there is nothing that can be done to stop it. Regardless of if it is within FAA regulations to operate that aircraft by the person, in that airspace, under those flight conditions. It's a 30-40 thousand pound aircraft, what are they going to run? Run up along side of it and try to jump in? This was in response to posters wondering how the plan got up in the air in the first place. If a man gets in a plane and has the proper knowledge nothing on the ground at the airport is going to stop him from getting in the air.

Step down from the Ivory tower. Brush the chip off your shoulder, etc.

Edit to remove a rude comment. My mother would have been dissapointed to hear me talking like that.

Well, I would've appreciated the detail/sourcing in the first comment, but we ended up there anyway, so thank you.

I cut out a lot of the quote so we don't have a barrage of text here, but it sounds like we're in agreement (or at least in the same ballpark on the following):
  • If a plane is moving on the ramp, and not contacting ground or tower, there is nothing that can be done to stop it.
  • While this aircraft is able to fly without a flight plan, it's fairly unlikely but does not affect the ability for the plane to get off the ground.
  • No need to be dicks to each other, that doesn't fly (hah!)

I only brought the 2nd one up in the context of the tower knowing nearly immediately that something was wrong as there was no flight plan and reportedly no identification by the pilot (essentially immediately tells the tower something is wrong with no ID). Flight plan is merely secondary.

I must not have made it clear (or left out) that I wholly agree with there being nothing the tower or anyone really could do to stop the plane. Sure, you could MAYBE block the runway, but if the guy played chicken that's an 8 digit dollar figure mistake (actually a lot more when you consider potential liability of human casualty if it went wrong).

I wish they'd been able to get a real negotiator on the line with this guy in time to convince him to try to land the plane and yes walk into a jail sentence but potentially able to turn his life around as well as he pulled off barrel rolls.

Atomic (and other pilots especially commercial), do you think this will result in some kind of remote override system for large aircraft? Seems in this day and age it's sort of pointless, but I can see there being a push to do that.

Agreed.

I thought the same thing. It's hard to judge those in that position though. This guy would have got jail time and a hefty fucking fine. But he also could have got book deals or appearances on tv/radio. Maybe even a movie deal given a bit a marketing hustle.

That's the pitch I probably would have sold him but I have no idea what I would actually do in the situation of the controller. I would probably do exactly what the controller did and try to get the guy to land while simultaneously trying to keep him clear of other aircraft.

It's possible but I doubt it. That opens up a huge can of worms such as remote takeover of aircraft by unauthorized personnel. Imagine if the guy that had access to the remote takeovers went crazy...now hes got access to probably an entire fleet as opposed to a single aircraft. But who knows with the advances in UAV technology and the fact that most airlines prettying much fly themselves already.

I honestly don't think much will come of this. It's a freak situation on many levels. I think some stricter regulations may be rolled out but that seems pointless as regulations are deterrents and only effective against people who care about their licenses/lives. But that is how the aviation world reacts to any accident. Regulations are written in blood they say.

I could see some sort of passive/active barrier defense. Something like those pop up vehicle barrier gates blocking access to runways. They also have a special porous concrete that is used at the end of some large runways. I don't remember what it is called but the idea is that if an aircraft runs off the end of the runway (overloaded, too short of a runway, whatever) the concrete collapses and absorbs the impact as opposed to a commercial jet barreling off the end at 100+ knots.

Remote deployable barriers + that concrete on edges of taxiways would have been pretty hard to bypass in this situation. Like the green/red lights that are sometimes used on on ramps for busy highways. Tower clears you to take the runway, barrier drops, once youre clear it raises again. It's not very far fetched as a lot of major airports already have a laser system that point across taxiways (hold short points) and automatically triggers a report if an uncleared aircraft crosses it.

But I'm just pissing in the wind here, I really have no clue what, if anything, will come out of this. Maybe Duke Main is hearing about some rumors of changes from his commercial point of view.

Never cross streams.

I don't really see any major changes coming directly relating to this incident. I'm sure Horizon will review their procedures, as will other carriers, but unless we start seeing some copycat junior bin Ladins, the current system is probably secure enough.

I haven't really seen the details on this. I assumed he was an a&p mechanic, all of whom know how to start and taxi a plane and many of whom are qualified pilots themselves, but the reports I've heard make it sound like he was a ramper (loads the plane) or some other ground based worker. I guess you can learn how to do anything with youtube these days. And I guess the flight simulators are pretty tight as well. It was pretty impressive that he was able to execute a low altitude loop without nosing into the dirt, or pulling up too aggressively and snapping the wings off. I wish he would have found a better way than suicide to cope with his issues, and failing that, I wish he wouldn't have pissed away a few million dollars worth of resources. I'm glad he chose not to take anyone else out with him.

And how long did it take for the fighter jets to show up? I wonder if the air traffic controllers have a phone free of important numbers to call right there on their desk.

The local news just had something about how the pilots were commended for their quick response. But they really talked generally about the "...142nd Fighter Wing airmen and women who helped navigate the stolen Horizon plane from Seattle.."

There is video of air force personnel and the commanding general, but no focus on the pilots who did, you know, the actual "flying to intercept the stolen plane" part. You can be sure if one of them had a vagina she'd be front and center of every news story.

I also suspect a large part of this story is, as Kona mentioned, the fact that this took place in Seattle.
Fuck Seattle. There's a lot of places I dislike, but not many that i hate.
I fucking hate Seattle.

My cousin worked for Horizon. She got promoted 3 or 4 times in just a few years. She is completely incompetent, but is 1/4 black, very fat, and spends 100% of her time kicking it with gay guys. Any company that promotes my cousin is clearly discriminating against somebody... because she is fucking worthless.

The weather in Seattle is not the problem. Yes, it can suck, but it also pushes you to make good use of the 250 some nice weather days that come each year. The real problem with Seattle is the culture. SkyKing lived and died blue pilled. Right now about 1/3rd of the people living in Seattle were born and raised in California... and they are fucking awful people. They have destroyed the culture and are currently driving everyone insane. Seattle natives value talent and hard work above all else... the CA transplants who take up most positions of power value Diversity and that's it. The work culture is awful.

I have a friend working at Amazon. They told him he isn't allowed to hire another man. He has to hire a woman and make her the highest paid member of the team.

In Vegas, MGM resorts, one of the biggest players in town, has this insane quota to meet to have half their upper management team be at least 50% women in the next few years. This is proudly discussed in the open.

And yet, if you're good at your job there is work for you anywhere. And over time, these large corporations will see the suicidal implications of having a large management team of women. They're already on their way.

What shocked me a little bit is the guy's voice sounds extremely African-American but he's a pasty white dude. I wonder if conspiracy theorists will claim this is a crisis actor or something.
