My Dad is a Feminist
I'm curious as to if you guys have any input on this one? Just recently, I came to the conclusion that my Dad is a feminist. He constantly values women, and their rights. If I say anything remotely "sexist" he'll call me out on it. Honestly? I feel like I've lost
a little respect for him. This is the same guy who growing up taught me to never cry, and always be a man, a leader. Now, he's embracing feminism. Truthfully, it hurts.

Anyone experience anything similar?

Men get softer with age. An old lion will run away from a youthful lion with brighter mane..coming to take over the pride. My advise will be talk feminist politricks with your buddies. And talk sports with Dad avoid friction?

RE: My Dad is a Feminist
I've been struggling with this for the past couple of years. I have a great dad who has always supported me and would do anything in the world for me and my sister both growing up and as adults. I owe him a lot in particular for how he helped teach me the tools of the trade as far as my business goes, as I followed in his footsteps in terms of my profession/career. Whatever success I have in life right now is a direct result of the love and support my dad (and mom) have given me throughout my entire life.

Unfortunately, he's now a HUGE leftist/feminist who has SEVERE Trump derangement syndrome and spends virtually all of his free time watching CNN and MSNBC and bashing our president on social media since he's retired and doesn't have much else to do.

I don't understand how he ended up like this since he was mostly a man's man while I grew up, with a lot of masculine hobbies which we still share today. He played D-I college football and fought in the Vietnam war for Christ's sake. I can't help but agree with the OP that deep down inside I feel like I've lost a little respect for him because of his beliefs. For him it started under the Obama administration but was pretty tame, and ever since Trump came into power he's just become completely unhinged. It's horrible to watch.

He knows I'm a MAGA guy and we kind of joke about it when we see each other but otherwise we avoid politics completely. It doesn't really affect our relationship but I'll just never understand how he caught this disease.

Recently on Facebook he posted some rant about how (basically) anyone who voted for Trump is a piece of shit who deserves nothing but scorn, ridicule, and misery, yet he's well aware that I voted for him in the last election. I'll never bring this up to him course, but man.......it's so hard to read stuff like that from your own father.

It might not be that he's getting any more leftist than he was. Politics around the world since the 2016 elections (and Brexit) has been extremely divisive. There's very much a "with us or against us" attitude on both sides and has forced people to choose the side they identify the most with or take a stand against those they feel uneasy about. As far as I remember, politics during the Bush and Obama eras were more tolerant of moderates.

I'm not American, but I understand that many people were drafted into a war they didn't want to be in and sent to Vietnam. While they may have voted conservatively when they were younger in order to secure jobs for themselves (through less immigration), it wouldn't be surprising that a generation that was involuntarily sent to fight an unpopular war would be against those who promote aggressive international policies today.

My point is that blood is thicker than water and just because politics right now are extremely polarizing, it doen't mean we should let that change our views on our own family.

Here's my advice, for what it's worth: Fucking don't worry about it. Politics is pure poison, always, in any era. If you let it cloud your relationship with your dad, you'll look back and feel nothing but foolish for letting that happen.

Relationships with other people are the basis of real life. Everything else is an illusion.

I don't think you understand our politics that well, Hillary was the hawkish war candidate with extremely aggressively policies that pretty much guaranteed sending our boy overseas to fight in Syria, with a high likelihood of conflict with Russia. Trump was the peace candidate, and has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating us away from conflict with North Korea. If you've gotten the opposite view, you're watching too much Fake News.

Just ask your dad's how they would feel if you, your brothers or their grandsons were tough to be gay in kindergarten or falsely accused of rape when young and trying to date a girl. If they don't oppose these core leftist policies then they have become either senile or are coldhearted enough for you to disrespect them.

Arguing with people who are unlikely to change their minds is pointless. If you live at home, avoid conflict and move out and start your own life as soon as reasonably possible.

RE: My Dad is a Feminist
I have a friend who went from open and strong minded to full on TDS feminist (and no longer my friend).

I think I know what caused it. He's a SAHD (I know, I know) - and he's constantly got the TV on all day. Religiously watches Canadian news. I expect he was just indoctrinated. Your dad is the same, most likely. His news has been telling him Trump is Hitler for years now, and he's believed them. It's also been feeding him the rest of the progressive agenda.

Take the higher road and treat him as usual while avoiding the topic. If he wants to be the asshole that ruins family relations over CNN by insulting you or attacking you, let him take that step.

I feel for you mate. My father-in-law is a live one as well, text book virtue signaling boomer. Loves illegal migrants streaming into Europe despite the fact that one of his best friends was murdered at the Bataclan. I mean, what do you say to a man like this?

True that. People rarely change their mind once it's made up, especially old people. Only external detrimental events that affects them directly will usually trigger a shift (and there is still a small percentage that takes their ideology into their graves, no matter what).

Listen man, you just need to sit your dad down and explain the situation.

During the recent Ontario election my mom would ramble to me about how she couldn't vote for that sleezy Ford, and how she was disappointed her siblings were stuck on voting liberal when they should be voting for their best interests in retirement, ie NDP.
I don't know how someone can say straight to their adult children that their only concern in voting is "retirement benefits"... That's boomers for you...

Anyways my dad said nothing in any of these conversations. Just let my mom rambled on and nodded along here and there, maybe saying some generic short platitudes like he were at work. The quintessential modern civilization destroying family unit, really.

Speak of social security / government old age pension. It's the biggest Ponzi scheme that boomers are going to collect. The premise is that you the worker will collect these deductions in the future. Too bad there won't be anything left. As Milton Friedman put, stop the deductions and give everybody a bond. The bond will be of the amount that you contributed so far and will be redeemed when you are a senior.
Off on a tangent......

Feminism is long past egalitarianism. The radical components of it poison anything it has to do with egalitarianism. We all agree that everybody should be given a fair shot with no special treatment.

Treat your dad with honor. Ignore his political views.

Think of this. What if you have a son someday and he disagrees with your politics? Would you want him to hate on you? Wouldn't it crush your soul to know that your son, who you love more than life itself, and who you would have sacrificed your own life to save in a time of danger, was despising you because of your beliefs?

Your relationship with your father is holy. Trust me, I'm a father...your dad sees every day he spends around you as sacred. When he sees you, he sees light shining in your face. Even if he doesn't always say it.

Compared to that, political views are puny and grubby and laughable.
