Apparently, DC is fairly pricey. First, last, a security deposit and another two montgs' rent is well over $10k. Of course, she will gross $14,500 for her first month in office. Still, how many 28 year olds have a $10,000 slush fund? Most are up to their eyeballs in student debt.

It's somewhat suspect that lobby group operatives weren't clambering over each other to toss a set of keys in her lap and say "my vacationing Grandma is looking for someone to house-sit her skyrise apartment".

I still don't understand why she can't just get a loan. She has one of the most secure and well-paid jobs in the entire world. Any bank would be happy to help her out.

Hell, given her level of fame they'd probably give her money for free just as a PR move, or could even hire her to shoot a short commercial promoting their bank among Latino customers, etc.

There are very strict rules on how the money can be spent.

She said that the outfit was loaned out or rented by the company. Similar to how Hollywood stars get loaned all those diamonds for big events like the Oscars. Whether or not that is true (in her case) is anyone's guess.

It may not be a very smart political move to stay in NYC while all her peers are in DC preparing the political landscape for the coming session. That said, as much as I totally disagree with her politics, the is something to be said for her efforts, sincere or otherwise, to stay connected to her constituency. If more DC politicians would at least pretend to do that, we would not have the toxic political landscape we have today.

I survived living in DC on $33,000 a year living in DC with roommates after I first graduated from college. Where she was at in NYC is more expensive than most DC apts.

It should come to no surprise to anyone that she's just being a fucking drama queen. Hundreds of thousands of young people living in DC today on nothing.

Good ear, Matt. The song I picked for my video was in fact Astrud. It's "Non-Stop To Brazil" from her second album, The Shadow Of Your Smile which came out in 1965. Gilberto was likely an influence on their "Je Taime," which came out four years later.

As far as challengers, she took out a long time incumbent narrowly in the primaries and then (if history is any indication) gave a curb stomping in the actual election. Two old, white males up, two old white males down.

I suppose people get the politicians they deserve. Her district historically voted 75% to 85% Democrat and is 50% Hispanic. It has almost nothing to do with merit. Gaffy's media appearances were either suppressed or ignored. She got away with smearing Ben Shapiro after he requested a debate or discussion. I don't recall hearing anything about a debate with the Republican challenger - an economics professor. She just stays sort of on message, the media cover for her, and the NPCs eat it up.

I saw someone point out on twitter that she's bellyaching about not being able to afford DC rent, but in her frame of mind, that means certain parts of DC, Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax.... not Prince George's county, Anacostia, Barry Farm, etc.

They all want to be within walking distance to work and not in the 'hood- that comes at a cost.

The room itself is essentially in illegal apartment not far from Capitol Hill. Both of these people could easily afford a better place but break DC housing laws to save money. No doubt this self-absorbed twat could do the same and nobody would call her on it.

I do have to say her recent live IG video is no doubt working and it's the future for young up-and-coming candidates. The format makes her far more likeable and human to her fans / voter base. Note I said fans because as we've seen the political landscape in the US has been shifting more towards populism, not just for the right. Look at Beto, he was completely unknown 12 months ago and basically rose up as this "celebrity" figure.

You nailed it. Naive people run for Congress all the time, and fail miserably for a reason. This time one won. Nobody wants their name on the inevitable implosion when her lack of experience and questionable judgment catch up with her.
