Should I snitch?
Graduated from school in 2014, been working at the same place 4 years now.

My boss is an absolute cow (no stick, the opposite end of the spectrum of a micromanager or someone who leads by fear).

There is an as**ole employee who sits right next to me. He started with me 4 years ago (similar age too). I am not white, this guy is pretty racist and has always given "i hate you and your kind" vibes toward me. He is typical fly over state kinda guy, has gun posters everywhere and is a national guard member.

This guy is a severe underperformer but in this company nobody really cares. Now, he has not done a full 8 hour day in literally months. He leaves then has one of his buddies clock him out at the right time. He does may be around 4 to 5 hours at the office.

I kinda want to reveal this to my boss, but at the same time am worried it might retaliate back at me? If the boss delves deep it would look terrible on him ("you had an employee who did 5 hours a day for how long???"). This could ruin my relationship with him. Also, thinking to the extreme end, what if this guy shows up at my house drunk with guns (kinda crazy, but just thinking through).

Anyway, I hate the fact that this guy is cheating while I slog it out daily and my boss is just never going to find out if I dont tell him. Should I be that guy?

Now if I dont say anything and ignore, it just wouldnt affect me anyhow and I could go on my merry way.

RE: Should I snitch?
Yes, you should reveal not only the loafer to your boss, but also his accomplice (providing the evidence is damning and unequivocal).

Not because of the subtle racism you mentioned, but because they’re clearly involved in unethical behaviour.

I don’t buy the “it won’t affect me if I ignore it” line either. A man is defined by his actions and equally by his inactions.

Call upon your inner moral courage and blow the whistle on them.

When it comes to shit in the workplace, unless you can gain something by ratting him out, don’t do it. It could backfire on you. See if you can’t find somewhere else to sit.

You sound Australian (called him a cow?) but you mentioned he was a national guard...so you live in America?

Why don't you have guns? I'd get a conceal carry license.

Everyone is racist. It's an opinion. I'm racist and so are you and everyone else. I'd throw the racism back at him and confront him at the same time. "I thought hwhites were industrious hard working people. Why are you skipping out on your shift all the time?"

If he is a complete piece of shit just rat but make sure you have hard evidence or witnesses.

No snitching on principal. It won't make you look good, and I hope it doesn't make you feel good. You admit you won't be effected by it.

The only reason you're thinking of it is because of jealousy and the glimmer of hope you'll earn brownie points. Plus it's likely he's getting away with his behaviour for a reason IE he is well liked by management.

I suggest you find ways to be better at your job; if you're already as good as you can be work somewhere else or start your own business.

I mind my own business. I had a dude at work who probably did 3 out of 8 hours but I'm getting paid the same regardless, I don't give a fuck.

If you think this is a bad thing, then you've already lost. Instead of bitching on an anonymous forum, grow a pair and confront him one on one, before or after work. The quote above makes me wonder whether your allegations about racism are true. It seems you are at least as judgmental as the guy at your workplace.

Anyway, if you confront him and he continues to misbehave, go nuclear on him without getting physical. Shit like this gets out of control when you don't address the issue right away. Never ever let anyone cross boundaries that protect your dignity.

Finally, if you are just jealous cause he leaves early, just deal with it and improve yourself to achieve the same results. Snitching is for bitches.

You sound like a bitch. So, sure, rat him out if you want to act like one too.

I'm serious - one ought to expect that sort of vindictive, drama-generating, back-stabbing behaviour from a chick, but not from a man, man.

Besides, be honest with yourself - is it really about him slacking off at work, or is it about his 'racism'? You're obviously not without prejudice yourself: "typical fly over state kinda guy" and all that. Perhaps he picked up your "i hate you and your kind" vibes?

Also, consider this - dude may be an arsehole, but he still has friends loyal enough, and who he trusts enough, to cover for him when he ditches work. How many do you have? And are you the kind of guy who other men would trust enough to cover for them?

It really would be a bitch move to meddle in this dude's business, especially when what he does (or doesn't do), doesn't affect you anyway. It'd be different if he was dumping work on you when skipping out, but if you're not being forced to pick up his slack, leave the cunt alone. If anything, you want this guy on your side; instead of fucking with his shit, maybe make an effort to make him an ally.

And if he still dislikes you, it's probably not your race that he can't abide, it's more likely because you come across as a prissy little fag.

---

Btw, I'm being blunt because I'm not really addressing you at all. I'm talking to my younger self. Totally been there, mate. Smile

Generating drama at work never, ever works out positively. Is your work conduct absolutely spotless? Because the very first thing you can expect to happen if you do this is a list of everything you've ever screwed up to land on your boss's desk.

Would be the best way but OP chose to be a victim: "He doesn't like me so I'll snitch him so he could learn..."

I would not be surprised to hear that from a bitch mouth but from a man...
Anyway I hope you'll get out of this safe if you chose your course of action

Tell them too much, they wouldn't understand; tell them what they know, they would yawn.

Shit, forgot to add, have been in similar situations in the workplace, and experienced similar petty envy, but I did manage to never rat on anyone. The only 'problem' was with my attitude. Since adjusted.

1) This must be a shitty job(how can someone just up and leave early for week, or months, on a daily basis and no one notice?

2) I don't see what the guys political opinions have to do with the issue at hand, he's a shit employee regardless..not everyone who supports Trump is a model citizen.

3) You fears are very highly unlikely: How's he going to find out where you live? How would he know it was you that blew the whistle? More importantly how could prove that his friend was clocking him out daily?

4) I would tell off of general principal: This guy is defrauding the company. Is there no way to submit proof of this anonymously since you're so worried about relatiation from him or the company?

I used to work with a guy like this. He could make racist jokes, call anyone whatever he wanted, show up late, leave early. They obviously like him for whatever reason. Corporate culture is nothing but playing favorites in the end. I'd say, just do your best & start looking for a new job if his presence is that annoying. You won't win if they like him more than you.

If you think you can take your cow manager's job by going to their boss with hard evidence that your manager isn't doing their job, that's a worthwhile reason to get some useless tossers fired.

Otherwise, as you say it doesn't affect you, why should you care? If you are really so good at your job, apply for better ones and don't even think about these people.

Don't snitch.

Leave to another job for more money.

I see jobs that I can't stand for whatever reasons as an opportunity for gaining more elsewhere. You should do the same.
