There's a reason both muslims and jews fight so hard for this, even if they don't articulate it.

I believe it has to do with the cult behavior of both religions. The worst is the islamic practice because it takes place when the boy is like 8 years old or so. That is an intense trauma for a young child.

Imagine that your parents or someone you trust, lure you somewhere and then other males in your family will hold you down, while you scream and shout. Some stranger then cuts your foreskin. This is actually how it happens often in Islam. An immense emotional trauma and feelings of betrayal.

I believe this creates cognitive dissonance which is resolved through a Stockholm syndrome. The anger towards the parents, which is not possible because they are your caretakers, is directed outwards, towards the non-muslims, who "forced" this on you, because they are impure. This creates a powerful emotional bond, where you have to embrace islam, because the alternative would be to hate your parents.

I am not of fan of circumcision, and some feminist teachers (I think rightly) pointed out that the opposite, FGM, is not tolerated here in the West.

I agree that this is the worst system. The Jewish custom of doing it very early on creates some physical trauma, but most psychologists including Stefan Molyneux highly overestimate the meaning of experiences in the early 1-2 years. There are psychologists who state that every tiny miniature difference in experience, in micro-aggression or loud noise create huge ramifications in later personality development. I once believed it myself as a young idiot who read Freud at age 17. Then I met plenty of people who had great physical pain in their toddler years through diseases - cried constantly as kids. They turned out absolutely fine. Most long-term trauma is rather connected with such experiences above or sexual abuse while being already very aware of things.

And no -every country in the world can ban circumcision since it's an unnecessary practice. But I would punish it differently than FGM. There should be a fine for normal early-stage circumcision, but prison sentences for Islamic ones done at age 8, and certainly severe punishments for ones done by Muslims. And maybe that is what the lawmakers intended to do. Since they did have some Muslims recently, it was easier to ban the entire practice than to differentiate based on religion and direct practice.

All laws regarding such things are irrelevant if there exists no spine to prosecute the offenders. Female genital mutilation in its typical form is far more atrocious and yet barely a fraction of the known cases in the west actually see a prosecutor's desk.

Late stage mutilation is worse in this regard because it invariably happens outside of a hospital setting while banning circumcision in early life makes it far harder to skirt the authorities in that regard.

But again, if nobody has the balls to prosecute then it's all irrelevant.

Did anyone hear about the FGM stuff in Michigan recently? They were bringing girls to a clinic when it was closed, and it was a female muslim doctor doing it... Apparently it was a Muslim sect. I do believe they took her to court, and it was like the first time someone in the US had been taken to court for it (although sadly FGM is more common in the US, and the UK for that matter than people are aware of publicly.) I'm a rarity in Europe as a circumcised man, HOWEVER, it was done in adulthood for medical reasons. It's definitely cleaner and what not, but there's no question it reduces sensitivity fairly significantly, I feel sorry for American/Muslim/Jewish guys who were never given a choice. I imagine the sensitivity gets less and less with age, so if you have it done at birth, well...you're missing out on something nature/God put there on purpose.

There seem to have been some benefits to it, though most of them a long time ago when sanitary conditions were much much lower. In our times there are no significant benefits to it, though probably for some men there are.

It was done to me when I was like 6 or 7, and I only keep two vague souvenirs from it, one of them being about to cry when I was in the hospital bed lol.

Maybe this explains why I can have sometimes several difficulties in orgasming (and having to finish myself). Sometimes that's very annoying for me, and might be for my sexual partners too.

Am I opposed to it? I don't think so. However I support the idea of teaching at least the kids about the pros and cons of it. I never had any proper explanation for why, and my own mother only repeated to me what the tradition tells us.
