Sometimes it's an opportunity that you wouldn't otherwise get, and you just need to stick it out long enough to get yourself an equal or greater job elsewhere.

The only way to accomplish this is to become self - employed, a business owner, or other way you have control. If you manage to get transferred in your job to get away from one boss there is no guarantee you don't get a worse one later. Too much learning the "skill" of handling shitty bosses is in actuality learning to hide productivity and become a tool for whatever makes them shitty.

I work for clients that I choose and choose me. I have not had a boss in 9 years. There are no politics to consider into manipulating myself into doing anything other than working my way towards the result I want.

When you work in most large corporations they are filled with petty, middle management women and men who act like women (I accidentally typed worms and thats ok here too) whose competence lies in the political theater of bureaucracy more so than doing the business at hand.

If I ever choose to work for someone else again I will only work in a very small company where everyone is a stakeholder or acts as such, and the mission is clear and out in the open. The profit motive in such a company that I would choose to work for would slaughter any attempts for petty incompetent women managers to play the games they know so well. The women who worked in such a company would be totally subservient, not to the men because they are men, but to the mission of the company by default.

You will see examples of this all over if you open your eyes and look. Maybe you go to a cleaners and you see a girl that really hustles, solves problems, greets everyone genuinely, and leaves any attitude at home. This girl would not be at home at nor welcome at the typical corporate america job staffed by gatekeepers whose primary motivations in life are fear and envy.

You may someday swallow a bigger red pill and start asking yourself what you are doing in whatever job that you tell yourself is the bomb, despite the bad female bosses and general dissatisfaction that includes the paycheck.

I agree that self employment has many advantages, freedom being the most important. Several friends of mine are self employed, so I've seen the upsides first hand ("Peregrine, let's get a beer." "Fuck you, it's 2 in the afternoon and I can't leave the office.") Personally, I'm sure my career will contain stints of entrepreneurship.

However, the downsides of self employment don't come up very often. At the same time, the upsides of traditional employment are similarly downplayed. A good job can be better than a shitty self employed situation.

If I was working for a shitty boss, I'd spend all of my energy to find a better one before I got fired. Working for a shitty boss is horrible for your health, happiness, and career prospects.

As far as the good job is better than shitty self employed I solidly disagree. If you are self employed and it is shitty it is your own fault and you can change it.

The bad situations you may face self employed are your greatest teachers.

I am sure there are a few good jobs out there but I am also sure that 95/100 people who think they have a good job just tell themselves this as a way to excuse the awful feeling behind that cant leave the office statement.

Managing director at a bulge bracket investment bank vs running your own web design firm. I know which one I'd rather be, especially if the design firm only has one abusive client. Like I said, a good job can beat a shitty self employed situation.

I completely agree. The 5/100 exists though, and I'm one of them. You might think not being able to control your own schedule is a deal breaker, but I'm more than happy to sacrifice that freedom (for now) in exchange for other advantages.

Edit: What I want to emphasize is that self employment isn't the nirvana that it's sometimes made out to be (not by you, but it is a popular sentiment in the "manosphere" parts). I'm thankful to my self employed friends who are willing to confess the shitty parts that go along with 2pm happy hour. In return, I don't pretend my job is all unicorns and massive bar tabs. There's ups and downs to both, and any young man considering his options should go in with both eyes open.

If your job is nothing but shuffling papers and getting abused by a hag, work on an exit plan. I would rather go back to wrestling junkies in low income housing.

I just came out of a horrible situation like this, over 2015. It took everything out of me. It took away from my lifestyle and health, and made me miserable. I began using the mantra everyday "I Vaun will remove every creative barrier in my life"

Most responses in the thread seem to indicate a lot of hate so I wanted to go in a different direction here.

My current boss is female. Actually, in all reality she's more of a "dotted line" boss rather than an actual manager because I manage my own book of business and she only steps in when I need guidance. I would work for her any day as compared to any male bosses that I have ever had. Reasons:

-She is direct.
-She is sociable (Not one person in the office that doesn't think she is great).
-She is caring and defends her employees at all costs.
-She reads and observes body language like a fucking hawk.
-She can smell beta behavior from a mile.
-She is a great wife and mother.
-She is funny as fuck and I can tell her what's on my mind and even make fun of her whenever I feel like.
-She believes in me and trusts my instincts even more than I do.

It's a great relationship that I cherish. A large part of my success can be attributed to her leadership. It is a pleasure to go to work for her every day and I say that with a genuine and open heart.

I've had female bosses like this too, and not too surprisingly enough, they are very successful. This past year was a totally different experience, one of the worst I can ever fathom.

Based on the experiences shared, many negative, a few positive- it might be best to simply look at the bigger picture.

Depending on your job market, you may not have a lot of options, and it is certainly possible to have good leaders leave and be replaced by poor ones, but some of the heartburn can be avoided.

No matter how good you feel about the company as a whole when job hunting, it is imperative that you have conversations with as many members of leadership you can during the interview process and utilize any professional network at your disposal to determine whether it will be a good choice for you. You can talk to people that currently or formerly worked for them, check out any peer reviews published on LinkedIn, find out the length of tenure of team members, and so on.

Hopefully you will be able to make your own assessment during the interview process, though.

In my experience of inside and outside sales in a couple different industries, I think it is possible to group them into 3 types of management styles.

1. Mentor: Typically seem easy going, and laid back most of the time, very people and team oriented. Thinks like a coach, wants you to succeed, able to replicate themselves within their direct reports. Leads by example and training. May use different motivation techniques, tailored to the specific employee. Some people need their ass kicked, some need a softer approach. They are willing to get in the trenches to make sure their team succeeds. They defend their team to upper management. The mentor, in my experience, is the best scenario. I would say the odds of getting one are about 10%.

2. Manager: Can be macro or micro management style, but is less interested in making you better, they just want you to hit your goals. If you are not meeting expectations, they will not be able to help much unless you are able to emulate how they were successful. If you are able to manage your own self-improvement, this can be a workable situation. Typically will be a positive experience if the company is in a stage of growth/ success, can change quickly if any struggle emerges during your employment. This is probably the largest group, and a significant portion of the corporate ladder climbers.

3. Boss: This is the absolute worst type of leadership. They were usually promoted because they were a top producer or, "earned" a promotion to lead people. They can be micro-management nightmares, but their biggest failure is their inability to do anything other than look at numbers, goals, and spreadsheets. They request them daily, weekly, and monthly, and you get zero feedback. All the work and reporting goes to suffer a slow death in the Outlook archives. Will be your best friend if you are dominating, but any adversity they will not hesitate to throw you under the bus to save their own ass. If the team fails, they will not own up to any responsibility, and will go to every length to show upper management why you suck and they don't. If they have fired everyone on their team and hired replacements within the last 1-2 years, that is a boss. If you find out you are working for one, you need to have a strong relationship within the organization and upper management needs to hear of your successes (brag about yourself a little bit, send "success" emails, win awards, whatever you have to do to stand out). If your name comes up on the chopping block, you need upper management to reject your boss's recommendation that you're expendable in that closed door meeting. I'd estimate this can be maybe 10-25% of the mid-level or regional leadership within a company.

Knowing who you're working for, and what type of leadership they can provide is just a small part of working in the real world, but understanding whether the person in charge of you is an advantage, just bearable, or all out nightmare can impact your daily and future happiness- and earning potential. This, if you're willing to look in the mirror, is just as vital when considering self employment.

I've had female bosses like this too, and not too surprisingly enough, they are very successful. This past year was a totally different experience, one of the worst I can ever fathom.

Me too, on all counts. But I will say: The good female bosses I can't count on one hand, across my entire career. I need a calculator to tally the BAD female bosses I've seen this year alone...

Yes, I agree with that. The woman I'm talking about built a practice from scratch at one of the biggest staffing firms and even hired our current CEO when she worked there. She is indeed a unicorn; or as they say in our business, a purple squirell.

Yes. It is reality. It happens to be my reality at the moment. My current female boss is a "complete cunt basket super sized" as well.

I really envy our grandfathers. They didn't have to deal with this. I realize some men are micro-managing slave drivers and they worked like hell. But there is something...unnatural...about a straight man with two working testicles taking orders from an insecure bundle of neuroses who melts into a puddle if you look at her the wrong way. It's like I landed on Planet of the Apes.

But what choice do I have? I'm a little late in life to start my own business. And, what would I do? Buy a franchise? I'm a good manager so I suppose I could do that. Any other ideas? I'm too old and disconnected from the millennial generation to be a blogger. What could I do for money? Any ideas on starting my own business. I have some capital. Just few ideas. But I may need to escape from this LOONEY BIN of working for a woman...it is HELL on earth! And yes, I am looking for another job. But that just trades one problem for another. I still would really appreciate any ideas you'd have on how I could start my OWN gig.

I'm too old and disconnected from the millennial generation to be a blogger. What could I do for money? Any ideas on starting my own business. I have some capital. Just few ideas. But I may need to escape from this LOONEY BIN of working for a woman...it is HELL on earth! And yes, I am looking for another job. But that just trades one problem for another. I still would really appreciate any ideas you'd have on how I could start my OWN gig.

I don't know how old you are but I doubt it's too late. It's too late if you are 86 and not physically able to function perhaps.

What would people pay you to do? What can you offer that helps people or companies be more productive, more successful, etc. Or are you into products. Can you make / offer / sell / distribute a product?

I work in a male dominated industry, have no boss, and love it. I fell flat on my face a few times and it could happen again, but I'll take that risk. It's HEAVEN on earth.

Yes. It is reality. It happens to be my reality at the moment. My current female boss is a "complete cunt basket super sized" as well.

I really envy our grandfathers. They didn't have to deal with this. I realize some men are micro-managing slave drivers and they worked like hell. But there is something...unnatural...about a straight man with two working testicles taking orders from an insecure bundle of neuroses who melts into a puddle if you look at her the wrong way. It's like I landed on Planet of the Apes.

But what choice do I have? I'm a little late in life to start my own business. And, what would I do? Buy a franchise? I'm a good manager so I suppose I could do that. Any other ideas? I doubt anyone would pay me big bucks for what I do. I'm a finance/accounting type, for large companies. Those types of companies have their own staffs (that's what I do). Small companies might need someone to keep their books, but I don't do that sort of thing. It's a totally different specialty, doing finance for small companies. And I don't do taxes. I do stuff only big companies need. With my background, I COULD go into personal financial planning, but I'm not sure how much I'd earn. Like I said, I might be better off buying a franchise. I dunno. I just know I can't take much more of corporate America, the way its going...it used to be hard work and intelligence won...now, it's about advancing women in quotas, and they all seem so incongruent with what the workplace needs. It's all about making people feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel good. What about results?

Define "decent income". If you can't take much more of corporate America, cutting down expenses can be a way of achieving freedom. Ideally, you raise income, but that's easier said than done.

Also, you are not limited by what you currently do. Consider online businesses such as affiliate marketing and drop shipping. Another option is opening up a cheap food venue.

It would only be a rote reaction to tell you to do taxes for people. You have more skills than that it is clear.

Start a solo practice that does a slice of what you do now for large companies, for your current type of clients.

Start a solo practice that does something needed for firms like where you work now, like an area that they all need help with.

Start a solo practice that helps companies track and integrate with finance an area that isnt tracked and integrated yet.

Get a 6 month contract on a team doing something like what you do but for a court case or a team for a merger, then start that kind of small firm with two of your friends.

Use the 100K to hire a developer to automate some part of your processes that no one has thought of before.

Fuck it all and go on a 2 year tour around the world, while stopping to visit potential places to invest.

Get the same job but work for some prince in dubai instead of a cunt corporate climber.
