Not at all I think.

The AR-15 is but-awful in close combat situations like....I don't know, an indoor shooting. It's less reliable, less lethal, and harder to use. The AK-47 is far more deadly than the AR-15 at close to medium range and has a bullet that will knockdown a target.

What is the AR-15 good at? Long range engagements in the hands of well trained user. The kind of firefight that only happens in MILITARY engagements.

That's why. It isn't about stopping school shootings, it's because the AR-15 is the most popular firearm within the category of "weapons that could effectively be employed by an armed resistance"

And it's not a "derailment". The entire issue is being used to try to channel energy into demanding an AR-15 ban. Pointing out how stupid an AR-15 ban is as a means of achieving the stated objective of stopping mass shooting is entirely on point.

No point men have been issued a shotgun since Vietnam and never in a CQB environment. The only time a shotgun is used in CQB is to breach doors. You shoot the hinges or the doorknob/locking mechanism in order to make entry. The breacher is required to move out of the way and NOT make entry unless he feels his life is in danger or physically impedes the entry team. In the rare case where a breacher makes entry, he is the least effective shooter in a room where friendlies are involved because he has to "hold off" on his shot as to prevent any friendly personnel from being hit by the spread of buckshot, meaning he will most likely miss.

In any case, the entry team, armed with AR-15 style weapons will pick up his slack.
