RE: The 2018 Winter Olympics Thread
There is a growing trend of people exploiting loopholes to make claims they don't really deserve.

Years back Jon Krakauer chronicled in his book "Into Thin Air," a peripheral story about a socialite who wanted to climb Everest, didn't have the athletic ability, so she had a bunch of sherpas pull her up the mountain. A literal social climber.

Then we have the story of Tim Ferriss, told proudly by Tim Ferriss, about how he won the Chinese kickboxing title by exploiting a loophole in the rules and shoving opponents outside a ring, thus disqualifying them. A championship to be proud of.

We all know things are moving in this direction. If you can say at a party, I climbed Everest, or I won the Chinese kickboxing title, then that is what is important.

It is like writing a plagiarized article with a bunch of fake footnotes that wins a literary prize. Just something to brag to your friends about, and they will be so happy to be able to tell other people they are friends with an award winning author that they won't bother too much about the details either.

The little people version of this is the people who post their own shameful behavior on Youtube thinking that they are in the right and have shown other people who is boss. You see car accidents, road rage incidents, snowboarding catastrophes on Reddit in which the posters truly do not understand that the are neither innocent victim nor hero during hero time. They are either reckless or aggressive or sociopathic.

Fair enough, we know this is a feature of modern life. I just didn't think it would reach the Olympics so soon. It is amazing that there can be people in the Olympics, the place that is supposed to be the standard of athletic excellence, not just fame, not just popularity, not just peacocking, but all these based on performance and nothing else, where people are so deeply in denial that they can sidestep the whole idea of athletic performance, and focus on their own personal me-ness to the detriment of everything else.

Look at the Amercian gay skater who washes out of the running for a medal in individual skating suddenly downplaying skating in midstride and moving onto another more flattering narrative for himself.

I'm America's Sweetheart!

Quote:U.S. figure skater Adam Rippon has spent much of his first week or so at these Olympics sharing his opinions and inspiring them in others. He has emerged as a fan favorite and one of the more talked-about athletes in South Korea because of his openness with his thoughts on LGBT rights, his own coming-out story, his haters and his teammates.

After skating a near-flawless free skate in the team competition, which wrapped up Monday, the 28-year-old began the run-up to his first Olympic singles competition with the news conference most athletes give before their competition. Alongside his (comparatively) stone-faced countryman, 17-year-old Vincent Zhou, Rippon provided another talk show-worthy performance Tuesday.

While Nathan Chen remains the U.S. figure skater to watch on the medal front, Rippon continues to make himself the skater to watch on every other front.

He may not be in the running for an individual medal, but he has more than won the gold in sass!

Quote:The other day I was joking to one of my friends. He was like, ‘You’re kind of everywhere right now.’ I was like, ‘I know; I’m America’s sweetheart.’ He laughed in my face. I think what you think of as the American people embracing — I don’t think, on paper, I embody anything of that perceived persona. I think that’s what people are latching on to — that I’m different.

Imagine the nerve not only to declare yourself America's sweetheart, but to be gender appropriating something that has only ever been used for women, and knowing you can get away with it because gay men are currently above criticism.

Though even this soy face isn't the worst of it. That distinction I would reserve for little miss Eat, Pray, Ski, Elizabeth Swaney, who is currently turning the glory of Olympic competition into a subset of her life, and living her dream.

Some way, somehow, using the fact that her grandparents were born in Hungary, and despite the fact that she didn't even start skiing until 25, she got her completely unworthy and incompetent self a spot on the Hungarian ski team, and she is fulfilling a dream by skiing the Half Pipe Run despite being unable to do any tricks. Listen to this cucked out commentor in his whispery voice pretending she is other than a joke.

This is next level delusion, and it will be interesting to see if anyone of prominence calls her out on her arrogance and presumption, or if they do what they always do: Humor the woman. Make her feel good about her choices.

Daily Mail doesn't seem to mind making fun of her. Although it is also making the mistake of quoting her without mockery, and she lets us in on her real plan, which is not to be an excellent athlete, but an inspirational figure. Doubtless she will parlay this into a career as a motivational speaker.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/wintero...rible.html

Quote:After raising funds through online donation websites to help fuel her Olympic ambitions, Swaney managed to qualify for Pyeongchang due to the sheer volume of competitions she attended.

Needing to consistently finish in the top 30 at World Cup events to make it to South Korea, Swaney has persisted with easy runs, sometimes not even attempting tricks, to make sure she does not fall and always records a score.

Her best finish came at Secret Garden in China when she finished 13th out of 15 athletes while a majority of her Olympic rivals were competing in the US Grand Prix at Copper Mountain or on the Dew Tour.

However, Swaney still hopes to inspire others who might be intimidated by the prospect of skiing up and down the steep walls of the halfpipe.

'It is an honour to compete at the Olympics and I am really excited to compete among other amazing women from across the world,' Swaney said.

'I want to show others that freestyle skiing is possible and it is never too late to get into this sport, and to help others to dream and to progress the sport in Hungary.

'I hope this can be a platform to inspire others.'

I didn't know that taking it easy and not falling down could be so inspiring to so many, so we will see how the world reacts to the Empress's New Olympic Career.

“The greatest burden a child must bear is the unlived life of its parents.”

I don't think I've seen a single medal ceremony, not a single gold medal put over the head of one American, not a single national anthem heard. Very weird coverage this year, probably due to what debeguiled was talking about up there. More interested in virtue signaling and feminism than properly covering the games. Haven't seen a single curling match since the mixed doubles at the beginning either. Guess I need to watch on the website.

The multi-cultural/ gay agenda is now plainly visible to me... The P&G diversity commercials. The gay figure skater commentator. The gay figure skater who got in a twitter war with Mike Pence. Complaining about diversity of the winter olympic team. And, of course, Lindsey Vonn.

Don't forget the YMCA commercial where the angry white guy in the pickup truck drives on a dusty road near some Mexicans just so he can blow some dirt in their faces. Or the poor lil' Muslim girl who gets a dirty look while walking to school. Yea, they really went there. This Olympics has been one big phaggot-fest both in the on-air programming and in the advertisements. It is pathetic.

Yeah that takes the cake... I saw an ad, maybe right when the olympics started, for a pickup truck, and it was like a catholic priest, imam and rabbi get in the pickup to attend a high school football game. I tell you, the virtue signalling is getting ridiculous.

I canceled my cable TV years ago. If it wasn't for my over-the-air antenna, I wouldn't be able to watch the games, and I'd be just fine without them. These assholes could use some payback for forcing this crap down our throats non-stop. It used to be sports were a place where a man could take his mind off the toils of the world without being nagged to death by virtue signaling SJWs, but they've invaded this last frontier. Best not give them one damn cent. All the advertisers are on my boycott list.

Eastern european soccer is where it's at. No rules really. Strong nationalist sentiments.

In terms of american sports, no politics in baseball... I wonder why?

Also, tennis is refreshing and classy as hell because everyone acts like a gentleman, apart from the shrieking on the courts.... Can't get enough of Federer and Nadal.

I would expect Norway, Sweden, Canada and any other arctic country to consistently do well in the winter Olympics, but what's up with Finland? They only have three bronze medals so far, and all by women competitors. Does Finland not have as much of an athletic tradition or organization?

A TV advertisement I can expect, but sucking up to the NORKs and a willing participant in mass murder and famine of an entire people for a bit of peace in our time bullshit is going too far.

Heard a segment on local radio today about how for the first! time! ever! an African nation would be participating in bobsleigh (women's), namely Nigeria.

They went on to explain that, although born in the US, and receiving no support from the gov't of Nigeria, they both identify as Nigerian, and are proud to represent the country their parents immigrated from. Huh

I suppose this is supposed to be another one of those inspire/empower stories.

Man honestly end of the day, it's just a sport pro's play and give eachother a pat on the back.

They got political years ago - most people I've seen at bars watch most these events and laugh at them.

I'd rather parade around Trump than Lindsey Vaun or Shaun White.

Finland were the pioneers of blood-doping decades ago before their cross-country skiers got caught around the turn of the century. Seems they've never come back from that. Ski jumping also took a hit because their greatest ski jumper of all time is a notorious drunk and wife-beater. I think he starred in a porn as well, and even stabbed someone? Anyway, they are no longer up to their previous levels in cross-country, ski jumping, or the Nordic combined (ski jumping + cross country). They've never been that good at downhill skiing or speed skating. It seems the only winter sport that really matters in Finland now is hockey.

Yeah, I roamed the 'net quite a bit trying to find out what results these girls have actually achieved to "qualify" for the Olympics. Unurprisingly, none of the articles about them mention anything at all about their actual athletic achievement in the sport. Just showing up is enough to "inspire a continent," right? Like anyone gives a shit outside the manufactured media bubble.

So Canada just lost to GB in Curling, Homan's team is can't win anything now. I guess her team cracked under pressure, pretty embarrassing for the best team in the world to not even advance to the quarters. Her 3rd fucking sucked the whole olympics from what I've seen.

Muirhead (Skip for GB) is a solid WB for me for some reason.

Pretty much, yeah. It was a double punch to the nuts. Seems like no-one really wants to put in the effort/practice anymore, lest we get humiliated again.

I'm pleased to see the Trump-hating Lindsey Vonn's epic choke!

A bronze? Guess she won't get the luxury of turning down a White House invite - Trump only invites winners.

Also, she's the one who texted her purple asshole to Tiger, right?

RE: The 2018 Winter Olympics Thread
No offense to anyone from S. Korea here, but having lived in the country in the past and watching these Olympics reminds me of the problems in that culture that are still holding it back. For example, on the men's downhill when the Austrian skier crashed during a practice run, he skidded on his back into a pole drill that a course worker had left sticking out of the snow near the track. Bode Miller (who I think provided excellent commentary during the men's downhill events), was like, "What the hell? What kind of bush league operation is this that they leave a drill stuck in the snow near the downhill course? Are they trying to kill someone?" He used more polite language than that, but it's clear that's what he meant.

Then, yesterday in the women's speedskating team pursuit, two of the Korean skaters, who apparently had a grudge against their third team member, skated ahead and left her behind during the race (which is unheard of in team speed skating competition), ignored her on camera after the race, then slagged her in post race interviews. Do they even realize how poorly that makes their country look in the eyes of the world? I mean, the whole point of a country like S. Korea throwing so much money into hosting an Olympics is to try to build its reputation on the world stage as a stable, established, enlightened place that people should want to visit and do business with.

I read about this, they already have 50K+ signatures on a petition, if it hits 200K in 30 days the President must address this.

Alot of regular Koreans are pissed about this apparently.

Also, USA Men's hockey lost in a shootout shutout last night, SAD !
