Gibson was great in the Mad Max series. He's also shown some range and solid acting skills in Gallipoli and The Bounty. Was pretty good in Maverick too. Apocalypto was surprisingly good, great period action piece.

It's amazing that a guy like him managed to get through the Hollywood system with a pretty decent filmography and legacy.

What's also amazing is that a guy that can basically have any woman he wants still manages to screw things up.

Although the fact that he is that successful/driven probably is a big part of why his relationships fail, as he's married to his job, so then it's kind of a catch 22 at that level.

Many super-successful guys are able to keep a relationship together, though, so it definitely can be done.

Mel Gibson was keeping it together. The guy was married for 26 years to the same peasant dental nurse he met when he was a nobody in fucking South Australia, which is about two miles as the crow flies from the Earth's arsehole.

They separated in 2006 after he crashed his car while drunk; the sense I get is that he'd been fighting alcoholism for a long time and she'd put her foot down and said that if he didn't keep his shit together and stay off the booze that she'd walk -- and then followed through on the threat.

He also turned 50 that same year; it'd be easy to diagnose narcissism and his alcoholism as an attempt to hold off the fact he was no longer Hollywood's great leading man, but let's leave that aside.

His relationship with Oksana Grigorieva, the next year, was a classic unforced error in the Paul McCartney vein: like McCartney, Gibson was well out of practice with women and on the rebound after being separated from a longtime partner; it's not unknown for a man to go from long-term wife to complete psycho. Any rational lawyer, PA, or friend would have told Mel she was bad news: changed her name a couple of times, married twice, had a kid to Timothy Dalton and probably pulling child support from him as a result. Any rational man off these forums wouldn't have fucked that with a ten foot cattle prod, let alone had a kid with it. She nuked his career.

All due credit to Mel, he's sort of recovered, and he might be banging this at the moment:

These bitches know that when he divorced his first wife, he gave her a good 400 million, believed to be the highest divorce settlement in history. Gary Sinise told him, in the film Ransom: "You're the kind of guy who pays to get rid of a problem." These women took the hint.
