Some bitcointalk. But harder to filtrate out quick information.

RE: The Altcoin (day) trading thread
Over the past 4 days I have become completely obsessed with crypto to the point of spending like 10+ hours a day looking at charts and tweets. I was fortunately quickly verified by bittrex and binance so I could start trading. Ive had some background in reading stock charts and looking at trends and patterns so its easy to catch on but these dudes are using things like fibonacci and 10 other indicators which Im clueless about.

I would have started a while ago but poloniex and kraken were giving me problems for over 3 months.

There is so much information coming at you at 1 time that it is sometimes easy to lose sight of the big picture. Ive gotten in and out of a few trades over the last 2 days and luckily havnt lost USD/BTC value.

Im thinking of just buying a paid subsription to 1 of the groups of the people I follow on twitter. The fees are a little high (250$/ month or usually a set BTC amount). Anyone have any experience with a paid group?

Man you could throw a dart right now and hit a winner, you don't need a paid subscription to tell you that, every single alt is up on a day like today. Just buy some shit and HODL/

There was a private group run by a Canadian accessory to murder and con-man, Adam Guerbuez. It didn't end well.

My profits for the last month are about 4 times higher than the rise of the total coin market cap. The strategy is buying the best looking coins that have received the least attention. I just go to: https://coinmarketcap.com/ and open up a bunch of charts. Look what's not been pumped as much as the others and buy the ones that have the best combination of features, team and buzz.

This has turned into a worldwide penny stock market which anyone can buy into. It's madness. This is not investing. I wonder whats gonna happen when all altcoins are going to turn red at the same time?

Sonaran.

I have a group for begginers Ive opened up last week. I normally charge for it because I don’t want the group too big and only want people serious about crypto. Since you have knowledge of charts I’d like for you to join. It seems your passionate in the crypto just like I and that’s good.

Also I’ve made plenty of calls that have profited 2x-3x but let’s be real, last week was a bull market. You couldn’t go wrong with anything. Only difference however is I know some inside information.

Well anyway if you want in the group PM me.

RE: The Altcoin (day) trading thread
I like to invest in INNOVATORS that are not just me too copies of the original Peerless, Bitcoin/LiteCoin and Ethereum Smart Contract variants... same applies to Stocks and Options. Some of the greatest innovation teams are rolling out some truly exciting innovative leading edge solutions NOW.

First is how to secure your altz cryptos as not many of the best alts fit on the leading Hardware wallets which means hodling on Soft Wallets or On exchanges until a suitable Hard Wallet or better anaonymous secure distributed blockchain wallet is perfected with atomic swap (shaeshift etc) technology.

Until then one of the greatest innovators is Bit Defender - being a cloud cyber security ISSO I am paranoid about having a Key Stroke logger and Root Kit Bot-netted free environment at home include damned new Smart TVs and Kindle Tattletales sending back every bit of your Buying and Surfing Behavior to their Borg Hive Masters at Amazon, Google, Facebook, Apple etc... all back doored to the NSA et al. I digress SO I use the Bitcoin Box ($99.00 USD) that installs on your router and replaces your routers DHCP so that it captures and analyzes all of the packets in the TCP/IP and UDP ICMP etc stacks to monitor with both integrated worldwide cloud traffic monitoring do hostile web sites and malware in the wild with Behavioral Analytics and Modeling built in and periodically upgraded automagically with unlimited agent licenses for your Wireless handheld, Notebooks, Desktops, Servers, Wintel Linux Mac devices safe from on line predation including Ransom-ware crypto crooks and worse.... I do not have the time to do line by line code reviews but AV Labs Malware Testing in Germany is very rigorous and Bitdefender is constantly at the top of their Malware Detect and Clean comparative results. The Bitdefender Box is a 4.0 Firewall Game changer bringing better than Enterprise level protection to the home and small office environments. Once you are operating securely with the Bitdefender Box and Unlimited Bidtefender agents (You Renew the Box Subscription annually). When first setting up the Box I let it sit around for a couple months and finally called their Tech Support in Romania spoke for an hour to address my paranoid cybersec ISSO type concerns - and to report some bugs which they fixed and they gave me an extra 90 days free subscription for my troubles and I use my android smart phone protected by my bitdefender agent to monitor the box and many hostile malware ridden sites blocking alerts that you may run into investigating the next cryptos about to go antigravitic at warp speed to other galaxies - avoiding a lot of the hidden Crypto Coin robbing malware and compromised sites in the process.

So once you have your locks, deadbolts and alarms working now for Basic Crypto Hygiene practices 101:

From one of my Better Newsletter Subscriptions...

It’s the sort of story that scares the bejeezus out of any crypto newbie.

“A cryptocurrency exchange in South Korea is shutting down after it was hacked for the second time in less than eight months,” reports the BBC. “Youbit, which lets people buy and sell bitcoins and other virtual currencies, has filed for bankruptcy after losing 17% of its assets in the cyberattack.”

Exactly how much its assets totaled, Youbit isn’t saying. It does say investors will get back about 75 cents on the dollar.

“Whenever there is an opportunity,” says Agora Financial’s crypto millionaire James Altucher, “there are criminals who will try to hurt the people who are doing well with that opportunity.”

For all the opportunity that exists in cryptocurrency — and it’s immense — “it’s equally important to understand how the Madoffs of the bitcoin world are trying to hurt people with scams.”

Today, The 5 furnishes some words to the wise…

In the first place, it pays to practice some basic crypto “hygiene.”

Our colleague Chris Campbell — former fill-in editor at The 5, current editor of Laissez Faire Today and an early bitcoin evangelist — has three basic tips. Burn these into your brain before you venture into the crypto world…

“Hard wallets, like Trezor and Ledger, are always a good choice.
“And two-factor authentication is absolutely non-negotiable when holding anything on exchanges. (Use Google Authy, not your phone number.)
“If you can, move everything off of exchanges ASAP.”
Remember, it’s still early days in the crypto world. In the early days of the stock market, you wouldn’t dream of buying shares without taking delivery of your stock certificates. They were your proof of ownership. Nowadays the system is sophisticated enough that few of us bother.

But the crypto market is nowhere near that developed yet. Keep your holdings off the exchange and in your wallet.

Of course, you can’t avoid doing business with the exchanges if you want to buy and sell without a lot of hassle.

James Altucher urges you to bear in mind that “customer support for exchanges like Coinbase or Kraken is very young. A stable and responsive support system is still being built.”

Meanwhile, others like Basecoin don’t even have a customer service phone number.

Key point: “If you search online for Basecoin support, any number you find will likely be fraudulent,” says James. “Do not call them.”

Here’s a list of James’ dos and don’ts when dealing with any cryptocurrency exchange…

“Do not rely on a Google search to receive contact information for an exchange. Scam artists cheat the system and send their false numbers and contacts to the top of the list
“If you get a message like these below at whatever exchange you are using: Ignore it
‘Given recent outages, please help us verify your identity. Click on this link where you can enter in your username and password’

‘You have reached platinum status. Please sign in at ABC to receive an extra bitcoin.’

“Never give your password or other account information to a site using a link given to you in an email
“Always go to the website directly rather than using any link provided to you in an email.”
James’ last word: “Please heed our advice, commit it to memory and take these security efforts very seriously. You can, and will, generate great wealth from crypto-currencies in a safe manner by playing it smart.”

Now that we have the ALTZ trading basics covered with optimal systems and crypto privacy and security I will be periodically reviewing Hardware, Software and eventually New Distributed Secure Anonymous Private Blockchain wallets as well and also let you know what I am currently holding in both Cryptos (ALTZ) and in a new 2018 Stock Market Thread that conform to my asymmetric risks (Small Investments with enormous potential 10x - 100x -1000x returns) innovative investments strategies with of course prudent multi-faceted risk management.

To the Moon and Beyond in 2018 as all the starz are aligned.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Healthy and Wealthy New Year to all on RVF in 2018.

And prayers and props to our Epic Champion of the Entrepreneurs President Donald John Trump for brilliantly fighting against all MSM SJW DemObamucommunist odds dropping our tax rates to 21% basically making trading in Cryptos taxable at traditional capital gains rates in the USA as long as you trade via an LLC etc pass through type entity - more to follow.

I have not been posting much here or in the Trump Thread because I am too busy making honey money to chase hard bodied honies and all my research says 2018 to make 2017 pale in comparison.

I also watch most of the Cryptosomniac guys videos for both White-papers Reviews and Trading/Charting methods - both are degreed engineers and have a solid perspective for sorting the innovative new cryptos tech for the scams and shitecoins.
Sam does whitepaper reviews and is a very successful long term HODLer and Sheh is a bit spastic day trader but brings good charting skills and analysis to the process...

Bought some ADA at 0.0006, they have a new roadmap coming out and it seems to be pumping in anticipation.

XRP is up to $2 - holding this one now, might add more at the beginning of the month.

XLM is up to .28, closing in on the ATH. Expect it will pass it in Jan.

XVG still lagging in mid teens waiting for Wraith. We'll see on NYE.

DGB went from .01 to .08, now back down to .06.

Looking at ZCL but I missed a huge run up and have no play money left.

ADA looks good to me if there is s correction and I can jump in.

Alts are going to pop in Jan from normie holiday/tax money looking for cheap coins.

What are your guys' thoughts going into Jan?

RE: The Altcoin (day) trading thread
I bought ADA as one of my first cryptocurrencies at 0.000004. And then I sold it at barely any profit. Lesson learned. Maybe. I've bought in a little again at a much higher price.

I've been diversifying into a bunch of altcoins the last two weeks - in order from highest to lowest holdings:

(BTC), NEO, Stellar Lumens, Ripple, REQ, Particl, OMG, ETH, FunFair, Walton, PIVX, Ark, Cardano ADA, Modum, Snovio.

I'm planning to hold most of these long term, although the ones I have most faith in for the future (and plan to put more money into) are - aside from BTC - NEO, Stellar, Ripple, OMG, ETH and possibly ADA (they don't even have a product yet, but it seems promising).

I feel like I might be too late for Raiblocks and SALT - unless they drop in price - but I'm looking at NAV, COSS and a handful of others for small investments. Monero is always tempting but it spends a lot of time not moving all that much (by crypto crazy land standards). Like ETH and LTC until their sudden bursts some weeks ago.
Like most people I'm obviously hoping to find that (preferably those) coin(s) that go 10x, 50x or 100x. 2x is not exciting enough with small investments.

And I've given up on day trading. More losses than wins for me. Holding and occasional swing trades for me I think.

RE: The Altcoin (day) trading thread
Have just begun reading this thread, but I'm interested in day trading cryptos with a small amount of money (6.5k USD). I already day trade large stocks (think NFLX AAPL FB SNAP MELI), but the volatility of cryptos is just incredible. I realize that with this kind of volatility and more importantly uncertainty it will probably be a totally different beast then I'm used to, but I think it will be worth it.

My rationale is if I'm trading BTC.X or another large coin, as long as I am long on the coin I really can't lose down the line. I mean even if I buy BTC.X at 14k and it drops below 10k, worst case scenario I sit on it for a year and it likely doubles from where I bought it.

I just purchased crypto for the first time ever using Coinbase. 8.5 ETH to be more precise. I locked in at an unfavorable price, but I wouldn't be surprised if it passed $860 by a couple of weeks from now. That being said my actual goal was to transfer the ETH to Binance and purchase XRP. I had decided when XRP was recently .71 to take the plunge, but I got cold feet about taking money from my main day trading and putting it in crypto. Then I got even more worried because the process of buying and selling cryptos seemed too complicated for my taste (keep in mind I am sometimes in and out of trades in minutes).

Now I finally bought the ETH at a fixed price, but it says it will take 11 days before it arrives. WTF???????????

Can someone explain to me whether I have to ACTUALLY wait 11 days to transfer to Binance or if there is a way to do it now? I mean if I have to wait 11 days every time I put money into this then how the fuck does one day trade? At that point all you can do is HODL, which is fine itself, but I specifically want to trade these things at least for a while, not HODL.

Anyone here that can please save me time and help me out? It's not really that I'm impatient, just that anyone that looks at XRP can see that if 4 hours ago I could have purchased it how much further along I'd be. It is obviously getting pumped and if it hits $2.50+ before I can grab it I will be disappointed. Normally I'd imagine a decent pullback and sideways movement for a while, but like I said this is obviously a pump that caught everyone's attention.

Please let me know.

Focusing on some serious gaming and personal development for the next few months. Will be taking PMs though.

You bought the ETH on coinbase and it'll take 11 days to be credited to your account, because they have to run it through the banking system.

Once you have the ETH, sending it to Binance will take... god, who knows how long. An hour? Not too long.

Correct it sounds like you bought via bank withdrawal which is an ACH transfer and those are taking 7-10 business days as of now.

If you want to move several thousand dollars a bank wire will hit the same day, I would try and cancel that buy, then go to the bank before lunch time and wire the money. Make sure you get the receiving bank info and your reference # from the bank wire tab in Coinbase first.

XRP has hit $2.33, you're out of time for this pump. But they drop 1 billion coins every month so there should be a correction down to maybe 1.50 range when they do.

If you must have it now, you can buy with a credit card up to $450 and it will be available instantly. My ETH transfer today took about 30 min maybe less.

Chill with the FOMO, it will just psych you out and will lead to making irrational decisions.

Lastly, remember OPSEC. Never talk about balances or profits or any of that shit. Not hard for someone to search for a new ETH wallet with an x.x balance and put two and two together.

Maybe I should be happy I can't do SEPA transfers from my bank account to Coinbase. Those 4% credit card fees suck but I get my ETH or BTC instantly, deposit to GDAX a minute later, and transfer to wallet or other exchange - without a fee (always deposit to GDAX first) - as quickly as the Coinbase/GDAX processing and blockchains can handle, which has been around 5-10 minutes for ETH the last few days and 15-30 minutes for BTC.

Great advice, thanks. I agree with the whole missing the pump on XRP thing. If it was a simple process to purchase it, and by that I mean basically instantaneous like purchasing a stock, I would have bought by .85.

Based on the nature of purchasing these crypto currencies I'm honestly over the whole idea. If I had a significant amount of money that I wouldn't mind parting with I might throw it into BTC.X and just let it sit, but unfortunately I am not in that position.

I have little doubt that BTC.X and ETH and the like will be up very big with time, but I literally just took everything I had on the side for cost of living and rainy days and threw it hoping to have gotten in on XRP by 1.70 and to have gotten out by now with a little bit of change.

Thanks for the advice Adonis, it is truly appreciated. That being said, is there any way I can cancel the transaction instead of waiting 11 days and selling? I tried calling Coinbase today and after an hour on hold only to be hung up on before anyone picked up and another large amount of time on hold I just have up. As far as I can tell I can't cancel the transaction. My goal at this point is to cancel it out and return the money to my account and in my hands.

Is this possible?

Honestly getting back to game I found a nice little sublet that I wouldn't mind throwing some money at to have for a few months in an ideal location in my city, but right now I have next to nothing to pay it with. If this were January 2017 and I could see into the future I'd say fuck the sublet and just HODL, but although I think the returns will still be great moving forward I don't think they will be so much that my bit of change will change my life.

Thanks!

Focusing on some serious gaming and personal development for the next few months. Will be taking PMs though.

I also guess I'm not getting that sublet...

Very bearish technical for the coming month:

12h Bollinger Bands squeezing on $14,000:

And it's really struggling at those levels. Expecting that to pop down when it squeezes.

Giant MACD has just crossed over on 3d at a sharp angle:

1w RSI has plunged and continued to slope off:

RE: The Altcoin (day) trading thread
For the US guys out there, has anyone found any documentation regarding the impact of the new tax plan? I'm mainly interested in the fact that crypto-to-crypto transactions will now be a taxable event. This is absolutely devastating to me since I'm working on a project to that will do high-frequency crypto trading. I'm trying to figure out what the tax rate will be on these events (30%? 10%? < 1%?), but haven't had much success. A high tax rate will make day trading unprofitable.

Gework-

Good post, but those are some friggin' weird time scales you're using.
3day? 12 hr? What charting tool even has those by default?

EDIT: Duh, Coinigy does. Never mind. I'm too used to tradingview.

I fiddled around with my charting tools and I'm not seeing any giant cause for alarm, though. It's a downtrend, but I don't know if it's particularly dire.

For those of us who have traded Crytos in 2017 and plan to in 2018:

Too large for one Post so posted in Parts 1 and Part 2...

BITCOIN (and Crypto Coins) TAXES
Free report sent to me courtesy Sam the Cryptosomniac
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRQkQ8Y...Opw/videos

Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer (P2P) electronic cash that allows worldwide money transfers without the need for intermediaries. The Bitcoin network is basically maintained by a combination of cryptography and computer science (e.g. Blockchain technology) and unlike a fiat currency, Bitcoin does not have a central authority and is not issued nor backed by any central bank. Instead, new Bitcoins are generated by the so-called Mining process . Despite being a cryptocurrency, Bitcoin presents a unique set of features and may be used as both a store of value (property) and virtual currency – for investment or trading purposes. This article addresses the US tax code and its implications on Bitcoin and Cryptocurrencies.

According to the Notice 2014-21 published by the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS), “Virtual currency is a digital representation of value that functions as a medium of exchange, a unit of account, and/or a store of value […]. Virtual currency that has an equivalent value in real currency, or that acts as a substitute for real currency, is referred to as “convertible” virtual currency. Bitcoin is one example of a convertible virtual currency.” However, as cryptocurrencies are not issued by a central bank, the IRS decided to treat them as property rather than currency when it comes to taxation. [1] Whether you are a consumer, merchant, mine, or service provider, the IRS perceives Bitcoin users and holders as investors. [2]

The IRS has made it mandatory to report any kind of Bitcoin transaction, no matter how small in value. A payment made using Bitcoin is subject to information reporting to the same
extent any other payment made is in property. Using Bitcoin for long-term investing or short-term usage (such as buying goods or services) will be subject to capital gains tax.

Capital gains tax arises when you sell a capital asset (e.g. Bitcoin, stock, bond, real estate) for more than its purchase price. It can be subdivided into short-term (sold within one year of purchase) and long-term (when the asset is held for more than one year before being sold). Therefore, the US jurisdiction presents a different rate of capital gains taxation for short-term and long-term capital gains (based on the length of time the asset was held). The accrued long-term gains are taxed at the taxpayer’s applicable capital gains tax rate (from 0% to 23.8%) according to the individual’s personal income and tax bracket. The short-term gains are taxed at the same rate as the ordinary income taxes (from 10% to 37%). Considering the complexity of US tax code, traders/investors are recommended to consult with a qualified tax professional about their specific situation.
Since Bitcoin is considered by the IRS as a property and not a currency, it is much more difficult to write off the capital losses. Capital losses are the opposite of capital gains and “are reportable as deductions on the investor’s tax return, just as capital gains must be reported as income.” [3] The IRS caps capital loss deductions at $3,000 per year. If a loss exceeds that of $3,000 in one year, the short-term losses may be carried over to the following tax years until the amount of the loss is exhausted. The capital losses may be used to offset gains and reduce taxable income.
In summation, if you sell your Bitcoins for profit, these profits are taxed. If you sell your Bitcoins at a loss, these losses may be used to deduct and reduce your taxes (capped at $3,000 annually). Spending Bitcoins to buy goods or services is equivalent to selling your coins and is also taxed as capital gains/losses.

Until now, only trades between fiat and crypto were taxed, with traders and investors paying taxes only when they “cashed out” or spent their coins. However, a new tax code, recently signed into law by United States president Donald Trump, will make all cryptocurrency trades a taxable event. The new code will take effect on the first day of 2018.

In order to have an accurate measurement of your crypto-income, it is important to maintain your trading records. Third-party exchanges and hosted wallet services usually allow users to download their Trade History, making it easier to track their transactions and to determine their cost basis – the original value of an asset for tax purposes (usually the purchase price plus fees). In other words, the cost basis is the value of an asset at the moment you receive or buy it. When an asset is sold, the cost basis is used to determine your profit or loss, which in turn affects the amount of tax you owe.

The IRS requires that taxpayers report their capital gains/losses based on their cost basis, which is usually the fair market value (FMV) for the date they received or bought their Bitcoins/assets (and also for the day they sell them). The FMV is the price that a buyer and seller are willing to exchange an asset (basically the current average market price). Let’s suppose Alice bought some Bitcoins for $500 each in 2016 and then sold these coins to Bob in 2017 for $1,000 each. Alice’s cost basis was $500 for each BTC (roughly the fair market value at the moment she bought in 2016). On the other hand, Bob’s cost basis was $1,000 for each coin. In theory, the fair market value reported by Alice when selling her Bitcoins should be equivalent to Bob’s reported cost basis at the moment he bought them from Alice.
DONATIONS AND GIFTS

When Bitcoins are used for charitable donations there are three potential scenarios regarding the taxes. The first and most common scenario happens when a Bitcoin user wants to make a donation to a 501© charity that has the IRS approval to collect tax-exempt donations but does not have the proper set up to accept donations via Bitcoin. In this case, the donor would be first required to sell some of his Bitcoins and cash out the money in order to donate. Therefore, his sales would be liable to capital gain taxes just as any other asset sale. However, the subsequent donation would still be tax-exempt and could be used to reduce his ordinary income taxes.

The second possible scenario takes place when the charity accepts donations via Bitcoin transfers and the investor is able to directly donate without the need to convert his coins into fiat. In this case both the recipient charity and the donor would have to file the IRS tax form 8283, which is used for noncash donations (i.e. property, vehicles, collectible art, Bitcoin). The US “IRS allows donors to write off the entire fair market value of donated property which has been held for over a year (up to 30% of adjusted gross income) without stipulating a capital-gains tax.” [4] Therefore, this scenario is more beneficial for donations that were originated from long-term Bitcoin holdings.

The third possible scenario happens when the charity institution does not have the IRS 501© approval to collect tax-exempt donations. In this case, the organization would be liable to capital gains taxes just as Bitcoin investors and would be required to maintain a record of every donation received. If the charity institution posteriorly gets the IRS 501© approval, the first scenario would take place.

When it comes to gift taxes, taxpayers are usually exempt from paying taxes as long as the total value of the gift does not exceed $15,000 per year, per person. It is the giver of the gift who
is required to pay the gift taxes. According to the IRS FAQ on Gift Taxes, “the general rule is that any gift is a taxable gift”, but there are some exceptions to this rule:

1. There are no limitations on gifts to spouses
2. Political organizations, charities.
3. Anyone that receives medical expenses or tuition gifts.

Although gift recipients are usually exempt from gift taxes, this may not always be the case when it comes to cryptocurrencies. Any gift of property that realizes capital gains or losses is subject to taxes according to the property’s cost basis at the moment it was bought. So if Alice donates 1 Bitcoin to Bob, the holding period and cost basis are inherited and do not change. If Alice paid $600 for the coin in 2016 and then donate it to Bob in 2017, Bob would still have the same cost basis of $600. If he sells the Bitcoin for $1000, his $400 capital gain would be subject to taxes. Similarly, if Bob sells the Bitcoin at a loss, he can use it to reduce the taxable income.

Part 2: Taxes

LOSS OF FUNDS

If your Bitcoins get stolen or lost, you may deduct your losses under the Section 165 of the Internal Revenue Code, which covers casualty and theft losses. However, the value lost would not be the current market value of your Bitcoin, but the amount for which you bought it. Moreover, there is a limitation that requires you to decrease your deduction in $100 plus 10% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). So if Alice buys 1 Bitcoin for $7,000 that gets lost or stolen, she cannot deduct her loss if her AGI is $69,000 or higher. If Alice’s AGI is $50,000, she can deduct a loss of $1,900 ($7,000 - $100 - $5,000).

Each specific case may have different tax implications depending on the circumstances of your loss. Therefore, it is recommended that you seek for professional tax consultancy in this instances.

FINAL CONSIDERATIONS
Despite being a burden for most Cryptocurrency investors, accurately recording and reporting Bitcoin income is a crucial aspect of the digital currency economy. When it comes to Bitcoin and Cryptocurrencies taxation, each country has a different set of regulations and there is still a great need for clearer instructions. Be sure to look into the tax code and laws of your own country to find specific details. Considering that the US tax code is extremely complex, it is recommended that investors and traders consult with qualified and experienced professionals (e.g. accountants, tax attorneys) in order to ensure that your tax filings are done in the right way. Regarding Bitcoin, there are several services designed to help users, such as CoinReporting and Bitcoin Taxes.
● Bitcoin is a personal property, not a currency, and so is taxed as a capital asset;
● Gains made from converting Bitcoins into a fiat currency are subject to capital gains tax;
● Purchases of goods or services with Bitcoins must also account for gains;
● Bitcoins and other alt-coins obtained from mining is recognized income immediately at their fair market value;
● Mining equipment can still be deducted as a legitimate business expense.
