RE: Best ethnic cuisine?
Really tough to choose one. I'd say that of the food available here in the states, my favorite Asian type is Korean (nothing like a good Bulgogi bowl).

That said authentic Chinese is an entirely different game from what most people think of. If you can find such a place it's worth trying. Look for somewhere that has two different menus.

RE: Best ethnic cuisine?
It's mind blowing how the "real" ethnic cuisines are reinterpreted all over the world.

The biggest example is Chinese... the Chinese you find in Europe or America has quite literally 0% to do with the original. Like not even half the ingredients are the same.

Same happens for Spanish food (I'm a Spaniard so I always try because I'm curious). I've yet to find a restaurant that serves Spanish tasting food outside of Spain.

I'm not complaining, I get that they cater to the local market and ingredient availability is a pain in the ass.

I'm just saying you should take this into account when you rate regional cuisines.

So I'll only rate food I tasted locally:

1) Korean
2) Thai
3) Japanese
4) Cantonese
5) Spanish
6) Greek
7) French
8) Italian

worst:
1) filipino
2) filipino
3) filipino
4) filipino
5) anything Scandinavian

I love West african, north african and middle eastern food, but I don't have enough local experiences to judge the real thing.

Pretty much nailed this.

My first real restaurant job was working at this Michelin one-star Italian restaurant. The chef was an old school mean bastard that broke me in pretty hard. Anyway one night we were slow and he was wont to speaking in rhetoric. He asked me, "What is Italian food?" I didn't really give a shit to play this game so I just rolled my eyes and said, "Pasta. Pizza." knowing full well he'd just laugh at my stupidity. He could barely contain himself and said, "But they have pasta in asia. They make bread with toppings in France, only they don't call it pizza. Italian food is food grown in Italy, cooked in Italy, by Italian people."

The point stands. Even when foreigners make their own food with ingredients imported from their home country, something gets lost. Distinct cuisines of the world are a combination of factors that really aren't replicable outside of their respective geography.

Nothing is more distinctive than Mexican food, from an Dublin restaurant, in the early 80's. There is nothing like it on this earth.

American cuisine consists of cheeseburgers, hot dogs, pizza, apple pie, cole slaw, fried chicken, Gumbo, shrimp po boys, cheese steaks, pancakes, Mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, buttermilk buscuits.

What's not to love? I'll take any of this food than all the other stuff in other cuisines by a mile.

American food is by far the most underrated out there. Its never in the top ten of best cuisines.

Cortez, you may just be trolling idk.

But half the dishes you mentioned are of European origin, some others are generic to half a dozens countries.

The thread I think is about Cuisine which is foreign.

RE: Best ethnic cuisine?
Best?

Italian, Mexican, Thai, Viet, Korean. Honestly anything that isn't Chinese food is awesome.

Honestly, Chinese food is amongst the worst I've had.

It's high in carbs, low in protein and fat and the protein that you do get is gristly and questionable. Whenever you eat at a Chinese restaurant in China it's a crapshoot.

The cook either slacks off and serves you a subpar meal or actually puts in work and serves you a decent meal. The food quality standards here are so subpar that I mostly cook my own food since I know I won't be wasting time and money.

The irony is that the best Chinese food you can get is the BBQ on the street grills, everything else is a massive disappointment.

I will be checking my PMs weekly, so you can catch me there. I will not be posting.

Most ethnic cuisines follow the exact same pattern, excessive garlic & oil in absolutely every dish. Then again, I'm tough on grease.

RE: Best ethnic cuisine?
Hmm i do have some favourites..

Vietnamese - Hands down my favourite, generally feel healthy after eating it, fresh and light unless it's a Pho which is excused as it's worth it anyway
Indian - Curries, Naan Bread, Bhatura, soo many things to try
Hong Kong/Chinese - BBQ/Roast meats and noodles/rice
Italian - Pizza, Pasta, Lasagne, etc my go to food when i'm travelling and want to feel like i'm at home for a meal
Peruvian - Ceviche and the mixture or Latin and Chinese/Japanese influences are soo good!

I'd really like to try more food from the middle east, Sri Lanka and some more Peruvian food (Just scratched the surface when i was there but it was great). Haven't been to enough places in Europe to rate either.

Turkish - Kofte, Lachmacun, pida bread, iskender, feta, olives. Too much to name but I could eat real Turkish food anyday. The combination of flavours and mediterranean taste is my favourite of any ethnic cuisine. Those generic kebabs don't count.

I can never decide, although I know that the Texas vatos love their fermented Surströmming.

(This video is an unrecognized internet classic. Salty, I ain't gonna lie.)

Where's Veloce? Surströmming and blue corn chips? You're getting shown up here.

Japanese.

I've come to like Brazilian a lot too, very good at staples like steak and other meat-based stuff. Only downside is lots of fried stuff, no surprise lots of Brazilians are getting fat these days. Japan has plenty of junk food but traditional Japanese fare is very healthy.
