I think you are wildly underestimating the impact protesting will have on fans. 10-15 years ago, if you wanted to be entertained on a Sunday afternoon football was one of the best ways to pass the time. Today, there is an array of interactive video games, on demand movies/tv shows with devices like hulu/netflix, and literally an explosion of internet websites and youtube for additional content. If the NFL wants to insult its fans/customers don't be surprised when they switch to other programs/mediums for entertainment.
The actions of Colin Kapernick and a few other players taking their knee might have been forgivable for fans in the 2016 season since it was just a select number protesting. But when entire teams do not stand for the national anthem that will be seen as unforgivable to a majority of fans who love America and what it represents. Try and name another country where a sports team doesn't stand for its own national anthem before a sporting event? This is an unprecedented action and it has done irreparable damage to future viewership and fans of NFL teams. I predict at least 25% less viewers of games in the weeks ahead compared to the same time last year.

NCAA has no salaries. NFL about 40% of revenues goes to players, in NCAA they pocket it all and give the players tiny scholarships in return. Football brings in big time revenues for schools and helps subsidize goofy sports like woman's water polo and hopscotching. Football is a big business. Coaches for example in college make more on average than NFL coaches.
This is the worst part of football for me. I hate how colleges take advantage of kids and don't provide any compensation.
Agree completely with the first part kosko, but in the age of skyrocketing tuition, schools are no longer taking advantage of athletes, a 4-yr out of state FB schollie at Michigan or UCLA is worth nearly a quarter million dollars. Not to mention admission to top colleges.
Not that there isn't some academic abuse at the football factories, but a large number of student-athletes do take advantage of their educational opportunities. Graduating with crushing debt is not something they will experience.

Robert Griffin III went to Baylor, which is a school for eggheads/doctors, which is why he has a STEM degree and a law degree. A Stanford student could major in whatever they want because you have to have high grades to get in there to begin with, ditto for Rice. Alabama? LSU? HAHA! If you don't major in PE, you will be kicked off the team ASAP along with that scholarship gone. Only "Football Approved majors" with hand picked schedules, your coaches setup before the season started, at schools like that.
I'm not American but I am a fan of the NFL. And I usually find myself to the left of a lot of the new alt-right views on the Politics&War forum here. But catching up on this weekend's antics is beyond ridiculous. Any player who takes a knee, or hides in the changing room, during the national anthem should get a month long ban without pay. Its completely disrespectful to the 1million American men and women who've served in Iraq & Afghanistan this century, and their families. And the many more from previous wars before them.
Kaepernick for all his headline grabbing antics doesn't even bother to vote in elections when he could actually make a difference, and has admitted as much. I'd love to see see how many of these millionaire athletes stick to their 'ideals' when it actually involves personal sacrifice.

The University of Alabama product posted the NFL rule about standing for the anthem on his public Facebook page.
He wrote the following:
The specific rule pertaining to the national anthem is found on pages A62-63 of the NFL League Rulebook. It states:
“The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem.
“During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking. The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition…
…It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses.”
Most fans have probably already bought tickets for the game they're attending for the rest of this season. So, I imagine most of them will go ahead and attend the game because they've already arranged their plans around it and trying to unload those pricey tickets would be a hassle. So, there might not be a noticeable drop in stadium attendance until next year.
However, TV ratings should take an immediate hit, perhaps around 15-20% for the rest of this season, and then a long, steady decline after that. The drop in team merchandise may take a bigger hit.

The whole point of sports entertainment is that it's an escape from reality for a lot of the middle class.
My gut tells me you don't see viewers straying away from WWE and MMA. They simply avoid politics for the most part.

For the real story, go to the comments. Go on Facebook and search for any football team and read what the real people are saying. For example the Steelers page has tons of comments. 9 out of the top 10 are people bashing them. The most liked comment is bashing them.
I'd say it's a pretty solid 70-30 margin in favor of calling out the kneelers and the NFL for allowing it. And that's just the outspoken people, the others that keep silent on facebook/social media most likely echo the majority.
Let them keep this shit up. It only drives the moderates more right.

The whole "Football Industrial Complex" is one big fat scam. You have guys playing in college not allowed to receive any financial compensation at all while everyone else around them gets rich off of their names and football achievements. Would anyone in any other industry tolerate this arrangement for one second? It's indentured servitude as far as I'm concerned. Like TK said, most of these guys are essentially majoring in football and have degrees that are unusable in the real world. Why don't NFL players protest this instead? Why does the multi billion dollar NFL have a free developmental league? What do you think guys like Maurice Clarett, Vince Young and other college stars are doing now? News reports are saying that this particular section doesn't discuss the anthem at all.

This is the best strategy. The NFL and individual teams will ignore comments on their Facebook, emails etc from fans in the hope it all blows over. But corporate sponsors are a lot more sensitive to public opinion, and are a lot more likely to pull their support of the NFL to extricate themselves from the PR mess if they start getting dragged into it. The NFL will very quickly wake up and make changes if they start to lose sponsors and their money.

Yesterday's rating were probably higher since people were tuning in to see what would happen. Now that fans are pissed, you'll see a decline starting in a week or 2.
That'll get reported as fan agreeing with the protesters. They always try to create the illusion of a majority.
