It looks like the cold front has finally stalled. How this impacts Irma? I'm thinking it could go further west than forecast, meaning it rolls up the west coast of Florida and makes an "official" landfall around the Pensacola area:

Right now the keys are forecast to get hit by a cat 5 with 160mph winds. I was watching the southernmost point webcam periodically today and saw consistent appearances of people, women, children, vehicles, bikes. Think what you want, but those people could all be dead soon. At the very least they have a death wish. I feel bad for any kids that rolled a gutterball for a parent that would keep them in the path of total destruction. The evacuation was mandatory.

edit: of course they could have simply left afterwards, but I didn't see a single trace of urgency in any of their body language, totally normal nothing wrong chill attitudes, like they had no idea what is coming

It's difficult to imagine how people would have viewed these rare events prior to the scientific method.

The only reasonable explanation would be vengeful gods, and afterward the survivors would only be able to think about how to appease those gods so such a thing never happened again.

Len, I think you underestimate the ancients' capacity to interpret their natural environment, and the wisdom, and vast body of knowledge transmitted from past generations. Polynesians for instance had superior navigating skills, capable of detecting the presence of very distant islands by picking up subtle wave patterns.

I just got to Atlanta and I am at my mom's house, I would like to make a few observations:
1)Gas was readily available all the way up the turnpike
2) A lot of military and heavy equipment was going south, there looked to be thousands of uniformed solders and hundreds of support vehicles-I have to admit it was an impressive amount of manpower and equipment .
3)I have never seen a large scale evacuation like this, at least 2 million South Floridians leaving all at once-it looked like people fleeing a zombie apocalypse.
4)All the hotels in Atlanta are booked and all the motels on the way up were also booked.
5)There were a lot of U Hauls where people packed up their house and left Florida
6)SOBE was Dead with a ghost town feel at 1:30pm Thursday- I hope everyone got out.

I don't expect towers to crumble of course but this storm will expose and degradecheap window systems and likely blow up water collection systems in the towers also. I feel sorry for all those HOA boards, but you assume insurance will cover some of the damage.

People wouldn't be able to stomach the costs because housing prices are infamously inflated and wages are notoriously suppressed.

That's why people were miraculously able to afford "storm proof" (read: brick or other sturdily-built homes) decades and even centuries ago.

Charleston, SC, for instance, sits on a peninsula below sea level on the coast of the Atlantic, yet it has pre-Revolutionary and/or Civil War structures that withstand hurricanes better than much of the newer shit. And the building codes there are actually very strict about modifying existing homes.

Meanwhile the newer architecture on the surrounding barrier islands blows away if you breathe on it.

Another element of the hurricane hype is simply a product of the social media/instant news generation.

For instance, the Irma vs. Andrew meme from the last page, while interesting to look at, is a very misleading comparison considering Andrew was a fairly small storm in diameter.



Most people who don't live in the Southeast probably don't remember Floyd -- because it didn't do much. That's not to say Irma isn't a big, strong storm, but these are the kind of retarded comparisons people make to try and portray Irma as some kind of world-ending hurricane of never-before-seen proportions.

A lot of the construction that's happened in south Florida since Andrew is cinder block. Asphalt shingles are not permitted. You won't see much vinyl siding either. Most of the new construction I've seen throughout Florida seems to follow the same formula. Brick, block, concrete, covered with stucco. Masonry roofs.

Most of the houses that get flattened will be old wooden shit. The masonry structures with old roofs will suffer some damage but at least the walls will still stand come Tuesday.

Adjusted for inflation, hurricanes cause more damage today than they did 30 years ago, despite a similar frequency and intensity of hurricanes.
