I would advise everyone here to get a backup generator, even if it's a small one. Deals pop up all the time for the inverter type, which is what I would recommend purchasing since they are quieter and less likely to draw attention. Inverters also throttle down the engine under low load so they sip fuel, 1 gallon can last up to 8 hours if you're just running a few lights and a TV.

Just keep an eye on Slickdeals or a similar site for one to pop up, the $150 happens several times a year.


If you don't want to lay out the extra money for an inverter then Harbor Freight's cheap and noisy 2-cycle generator is always on sale for less than $100 (there's a coupon that is easy to find):

Be aware though that the synchronous-type generators (non-inverter) like the 2 cycle above, don't generate clean power so be careful of plugging electronics into them. Most DC-AC power supplies that laptops use can handle the dirty electricity but I wouldn't run a desktop or TV on anything but an inverter generator.

Don't underestimate the noise factor.

You might think your generator is pretty quiet but take it out to the sticks and run it without the background noise of the city/suburbs and you'll realise just how loud it is. During a blackout things can get pretty quiet.

Loud generators = lots of wonderful new friends from next door and beyond banging on your front door to charge their phones. Extension cords will start snaking toward your house like an invading army of serpents.

Back in business bros, just got electricity after 3 days without it. My cellphone was also going crazy since sunday barely has any signal, but, besides all that everything is okay on my end.

My power was only out 7 hours but my condo building lost the roof from an Irma associated tornado.

It's a bit like zombie world. Most of the island doesn't have power. Eerie at night.

Same boat mate... Never thought i'd be this happy for electricity. If you hate someone.. send them to florida in summer without electricity.. I guarantee you they'll be living in hell.

A generator seems a little overkill to keep a laptop running with enough juice to browse the forum. Just use a power bank.

Power is back on at work, so is the internet. Not sure about my home; I'll find out after today's work. Been staying with my girl's parents for a few days. Disappointed mainly in not being able to have Trump hand me a sandwich and take a selfie with Pence; also would've smiled and shook hands with Rubio while calling him Little Marco. Oh well.

Another tropical system is going to be moving in our general direction. Still very far away, but I'm already getting a bad feeling in my gut with these models. Hopefully we're done for the year, don't know if I can literally afford, another hurricane knocking at the door.
