As a matter of principle, I automatically give no credence to anything any man's ex-wife (or ex-girlfirend) says about him. It doesn't matter if he's my closest friend, or a miserable male feminist like Whedon. I know what women are like after a breakup.

I'm not at all surprised that Whedon characterises what he was doing as out of his control; you don't choose to have diseases, they happen to you. The reference to Greek myth is to be expected: Whedon, like most liberals gorged on pop culture, is confusing Shakespearean tragedy - where the hero's fall happens because of a fatal flaw inherent to the character - with Greek mythology, where misfortune follows from the gods because of something evil or impermissible the protagonist does. Most Greek myths were stories meant to teach the listener something.

Either way, Whedon is externalising what he did and trying to distance it from himself by suggesting he had no choice in what he did, that he was afflicted with congenital rains of young pussy.

The particular Greek myth Whedon is unconsciously/deliberately referencing -- abundant pussy that he cannot touch -- is that of Tantalus. Tantalus's punishment was endless dissatisfaction: stand in a pool of water that he cannot drink from no matter how thirsty he becomes, have a bunch of grapes eternally just out of reach.

Let's leave aside that endless dissatisfaction is essentially the state of chronic narcissism. The most likely solution to this is that Whedon's being straight: he was suddenly swimming in young pussy. (And one might note the relationship between Hawkeye and his wife is about as awkward as the movie gets ... almost as if Whedon doesn't actually know how this shit operates in real life. As if a successful marriage is able to be tacked onto a person like a CV entry. To say nothing of the fact Hawkeye and Black Widow are quite emotionally intimate despite the fact Hawkeye's got a wife at home - that's another hilarity entirely.)

Point being, Whedon has no fucking script for how middle-age marriage should look, similar to the entire audience of The Descendants. He therefore seeks out, like all scriptless couples, "the way it felt in the beginning." And it fails because, just like the stereotypical mid-life crisis, you can't get your hair, your muscle, or your vitality back to 20 years ago no matter how fast a car you drive or how many young sluts you bang. You are quite literally suffering an identity crisis, because the one you have is fake, pop culture has given you no indicators where to go next, and you're starting to breathe heavy as you walk up stairs. So you double down and keep on having affairs, because you think this is intimacy, that the first rush of sex is keeping you young, or isn't you. Feminism to Whedon most likely was a coat he learned to put on every summer when he went to his Mom's house at the artist commune. Like the rest of his identity.
