This has crossed my mind as well, and I think your instincts are correct. If you're a guy with substantial student loan debt and little hope of paying it off, this is a good thing for you. There's not much hope of a mass student loan bailout as things stand, but if the student loan issue becomes politicized as a feminist issue (as it is ripening to become), that will change. Once it comes to be seen as a barrier to gender equality and an anchor around the ankles of an already "marginalized group" (women), the calls to do something to alleviate it will grow and get more and more likely to actually result in something concrete. Highly indebted men will be the secondary beneficiaries of this effort to bail women out.

That will only happen if the media tells them to politicize the issue. Aside from Bernie no one raised the issue and that guy was brought back to reality pretty quick.

I don't think there will be any bail outs. They might bail out banks like in 2008 but they will never bail out average people. The farthest they will go is debt forgiveness if you cannot pay it off after 25-30 years. Everyone is okay with being wage cucks forever with income-based repayment. I don't think most will bother leaving the country and defaulting on their loans. Soon 2/3rds will be 4/5ths. Since women are majority voters now, will they be able to vote their way out of this?

The thing that rubs me the wrong way about this thread, as others have pointed out, is that these kids were "just following orders" so to speak. If your entire family pushes you to do something, you assume it's for your benefit but *bam* you're now saddled with crippling debt. Seems sorta bizarre to laugh at these people when they were literally misled from the start from the top down.

It's like many of us starting out in the game. Everyone told us to be nice guys, we did it, we expected it to work since we were following orders but that was bullshit and we had to unravel the whole thing and rebuild ourselves from the top-down.

Think of all the happy, debt-free women we could have had instead of all these future sluts and spinsters. Makes me feel a little depressed at some level.

It's possible the elites will use a form of generational economic warfare and strip the baby boomers of a serious portion of their 401k assets once the voting demographics tip in favour of debt saddled students over retired boomers.

That said, look for it to be provided to people in "helpful fields" and denied to people in "problematic fields".

There's a strong chance that the elites are going to try and win the last leg of this race on the back of the pweshus wymmins.

I'm with you here. Many of our generation have been victims of terrible education and career advice.

No one sat any of us down and talked through our real options with us. My parents certainly didn't do some research and plan a strategy session with me to determine the best way to get that all important degree.

Instead they pushed me to go to a school they approved of with a price tag they were probably incapable of comprehending.

After all, getting a college degree had been good advice when my parents were 18, never mind the fact that my father graduated with zero debt because school was so cheap those days that you could pay all your expenses out of pocket by working part-time through the year and full-time each summer.

I'm aware of a dozen of little tricks that together would knock down the cost of a university degree to about half. None of this was shared with me. I was never encouraged to think outside of the box, although I was being encouraged to attend more school so that I could learn how to think.

Of course, one could say that it's your own responsibility to do your research and decide how to spend your money, but at 18, how much do you know and why wouldn't you trust the parents who love you and show genuine concern for your future?

Ironically, I ended up going against the grain anyway (but still racked up a ton of debt) finishing a degree AND spending years learning enough about China that I could ensure myself an income in the future.

Most of my classmates weren't so lucky.

I agree 100%, 18 year olds aren't the best for making such huge life choices.
