Living outside of the USA and in my travels, it's not difficult to meet people that speak 3 or 4 languages. Growing up in NYC, it was not uncommon to hear or see several different languages around me. At the same time, I realize there are people like the guy in this vid in the USA

My great grandmother came over from eastern Europe on a boat and didn't speak a word of English her whole life. She also wasn't a legal US citizen for her first 50 years in the country. From what I hear that was normal around here back then.

I saw the clip purely as intolerance and ignorance. The guy could also be angry about other things in his life.

The guy who was talking Spanish to his mother is Puertorriqueño so I'm guessing he and his mother were both born US citizens.

That was sad to watch. Not defending the garbage he was saying, but it's obvious that he's pissed off about being in a wheelchair.

The guy recording it is an asshole too though. He was exploiting the situation so he can post it online and get points for being a victim. I've been in situations before where people act like this. A good example is when I was crossing the street, and a black homeless guy said, "Look at those white hillbillies run." I could have gone up to him, and egged him on to record any racist shit he would have said. Instead, I moved on with my life and realized some people are pissed off about where they are in life. Of course, in our attention whoring society, it's easy to record sad people and try to gain victim points.

I thought about this, but this is the world we live in now. Everyone is walking around with a video camera so a lot more of this stuff is exposed. After all, the guy being recorded was fully aware that he was being recorded as well. In the final analysis, I think it's better to expose it for what it is.

I'm white but I sometimes speak Spanish when I'm out and about in the US because I enjoy talking it to people with whom it is their first language. I've made some friends that way and had some pleasant experiences, including a few bangs. If I was the guy with the camera I would have reacted the same way because wheelchair guy was being a jackass and deserved to be called out for it. Notice how reasonable he suddenly got when the police arrived? He knew he was wrong and he's probably used to getting away with it.

Look I get it, I can't imagine his life is easy. I also understand that everyone else is the problem in America. Get rid of Mexicans then life will be better. Americans are better at laboring in the hot fields picking fruit anyway.

I think it is now just a form of evidence, in case something goes bad. So many unstable people out there. Just like guys here send texts to confirm the slut from the night before had a good time and wants to see the dude again. Too many people are willing to lie these days to hurt someone else.

The video starts after the conversation has started, so it wasn't like the guy was like "hey let me start some shit with the guy in the wheelchair." It sounded like the wheelchair guy started shit, the other guy just wanted to protect himself.

Personally I'm in favor of 'language shaming'. Don't live in a country where you don't want to learn the language. Then again, it's ridiculous to expect two native Spanish speakers to use English when talking to each other in public, whatever their level of English competency is.

Natively bilingual/bicultural people can be a pain in the ass. They want the benefits of the dominant culture on the one hand but are often hostile when elements of their subculture, including language, are 'culturally appropriated'.

One of the things I hate most about this country is the fact that I understand more of what's being said around me on the streets of Tokyo than I do when I'm out at the grocery store. It's infuriating, and speaking a foreign language in public if you're not a tourist is a great sign that you need to #GoBack.


A couple months ago, I was in a Tokyo electronics district, where I purchased a used tablet. I had a long discussion in Japanese about the tablet's specs, its flaws, the payment method, the cold boot from charge time, etc. Went fine. I love my tablet, and it's exactly how it was described to me. Kickass tablet, too.

A week ago, my dishwasher broke. I called maintenance to fix it, and they sent some random Vietnamese guy whose English was so god-awful that I couldn't understand if he was saying "Your dishwasher is fixed" "Your dishwasher needs fixed" or "I can't fix your dishwasher". I stared at him dumbly for like a full minute as he tried to get across this idea to me, which a pre-schooler could've done. I'm sure all of you had similar experiences. It's basically a running joke at this point.

This is infuriating, and it's totally wrong. It shows a complete lack of a desire to integrate. It's devastating for a nation in the long run.

I didn't watch the whole video, because it's eight fucking minutes long, but from what I saw, wheelchair guy is in the right and the videotaper and his mom need to catch a visit from ICE.

Nothing wrong with speaking Spanish in the USA, as long as you're making an effort to integrate (this guy filming obviously knows english pretty well). If, indeed, all this other guy did was speak spanish on the phone to get wheelchair all riled up, I would say wheelchair is not playing with a full deck. That this little girl filming feels to need to press and press this guy while obviously filming him is a sign of so many things I am against.

Guy filming seems a loser to me. Guy yelling is losing. It's a shame.

Guy with the camera is an absolute attention whore.

He's clearly American yet posts his video in Spanish to collect brownie points from his demographic. The cameraman is likely checking how many "likes" he got every 30 seconds in the same way a chick does when she posts a photoshopped pic of her tits hanging out on instagram.

The guy in the wheelchair has obvious mental issues, but the cameraman keeps provoking him as he assumes that his "victimhood" permits him to persist with his bullying.

Lets be clear that the cameraman is a bully as he's filming and patronizing someone who is both physically and mentally disabled and who had no means to stop the cameraman from filming. He requested multiple times, as did his wife while he continued to be mockingly filmed.

Who knows what the handicapped guy was going through. He probably missed his flight, and as much as a nuisance as that is as a normal person, I can't imagine how bad it is to deal with something like that as a handicapped person. Waiting in 3 sets of lines, being sent to opposite ends of the airport for rebooking, all the while thinking "if I had my legs I wouldn't have missed the flight to begin with."

It's interesting when two protected groups go at each other, and to see who the SJWs side with. It's humorous when a BLM member and a feminist go at it because they both typically have a similar screw loose and the same thirst for attention, but in this situation it's more of a real issue. When I was a kid it seemed that handicapped people were higher on the totem pole of protected groups, and this was the time when ADA-approved ramps and elevators were becoming mandatory in buildings. As other groups have become far larger in number, in voice, and in presence and their ability to publicly protest, it seems as though handicapped people have fallen to the bottom, which is a shame.

lol the video taper and his mother are both US citizens. There is nothing ICE could do to them.

I understand the mainland mentality but people who live off the mainland will sometimes speak more than one language from birth.

The guy was having a private conversation with his mother on the phone who doesn't live on the mainland. He is fluent in English as well as Spanish. Not sure how one could argue that the nutt job in the wheelchair was in the right.

Agree the guy filming was a bit overzealous. At the same time, if you are having a phone conversation and it could be with a chic who lives in another country and doesn't speak English, who the fuck is dude to come at you about the language issue?

While it is obvious the dude in the wheelchair is a bit off, let's not pretend that this couldn't happen under different circumstances.

Im brown. Whenever I go to the US people treat me respectfully and kindly. I guess some people dislike stereotypes in which I dont fit. The only hate Ive ever received in the US has come from latino DHS officers who spoke neither english nor spanish properly.

On the other hand, I know a guy who has lived in Texas for 20 years, illegally. He works in construction and speaks zero english, nada. Whenever he tells his sob stories about getting hated on, I feel no sympathy for him.
