2 years in jail is nowhere close to excessive. That punk could have killed that woman. In fact, I'm surprised she didn't suffer far more than she did. I never said any of this--in fact, I have maintained that it was stupid, dangerous, and horrible behavior. HOWEVER, I don't see it rising to the level of Felony Battery that would bring a prison sentence of more than a year. I'm not sure what state they are in, but in general there's no indication of a dangerous weapon, there's no indication that he caused serious harm/disfigurement, there's no indication that she was tortured, there's no indication that he was previously convicted of a battery, etc. YES it was horrible--nobody is denying that.

However, "a couple years in prison" isn't just an arbitrary number--sentencing corresponds with the crime committed, and certain crimes carry maximum/minimum sentences. Laws exist.

Of course the next comment immediately goes to "Obama's son" reasoning. Anyone who disagrees and doesn't condemn a black kid (or doesn't even disagree, just points out the existence of sentencing guidelines and laws!) is automatically in the bag for Obama (or a troll!).

I think the issue there is that it just happens so often in Chicago (live here so I see it on local news every day, can't speak to Baltimore/DET) that it isn't national news--it's just another day. CNN isn't going to devote BREAKING NEWS coverage to a gang shooting in Chicago because in certain neighborhoods in the city, it's omnipresent.

This case is quite simple. A young thug threw an elderly woman who was doing her job on the ground and then into a pool. Its because of men like you who want to nuance, nitpick and bend over backwards to defend the indefensible, all in the name of political correctness that Western civilization is destroying itself.

I will absolutely grant that I could be wrong, and there would be outrage here over white kids doing the same to a black woman. Fine.

This is a horrible action and there should be a punishment. The kid seems to show some remorse and is taking responsibility by turning himself in. Hopefully that's because of actual empathy instead of something else.

Years are extremely excessive though. A more reasonable punishment. Delayed month in a juvenile home for a month in the summer. Pay for any medical costs. Rest of the summer has to do 20 hours a week community service at an old folks home and 6 months probation. If he really feels bad and responsible that will be effective. If not we all know the route the kid will take in the couple years until he is an adult.

Elderly people are extremely fragile. You and I can get pushed into a pool and escape with nothing more than a bruised ego and maybe a busted cell phone, but that can easily be fatal for an elderly woman. And that "body slam"? I know plenty of elderly people who've had broken hips and permanent damage from just minor falls, let alone being smashed to the ground by some pissed off gorilla.

He's very lucky he's not facing a murder charge, honestly.

In any event, I think it would be better for society if he was simply taken out behind a shed and nobody ever saw him again, but failing that, 3 years will have to do.

The crux is the matter is lost on debates about whether the "youth" should get probation or hard time measured in years, particularly because he'd come out of lockup worse than he went in.
