Hah what a joke.

Yeah they both just crashed, but ETH is recovering way quicker with heavy support in the mid 300s. BTC down to $2400 ish, and the Ratio is up to .135 ish now. It looks to me like some people are switching from BTC to ETH. BTC with less than 40% market dominance now, and with a market cap only ~8bil more than ETH, not long until ETH takes over the market at this rate.

Is this finally the correction we have been looking for?

Curious to see if my ETH limit buy orders will trigger. I was thinking I set them too low.

Coinbase is down again. Can't handle the load. They need to put up or get out.

Yeah I just tried to get on coinbase and Buy The FN Dip, but any time the market gets crazy volatile like this they seem to shut down.

I bought about an hour ago, precisely for that reason. Coinbase can't handle this shit, the bounce is already coming that was too quick.

It is amazing how crypto is a $100 billion market and there is still not a really good exchange. Exchanges always have issues and it is still a pain in the ass to go from fiat to crypto.

Interesting Chart:

Currency Insight: This Currency Booms in Bad Times
BY CHRIS LOWE, EDITOR AT LARGE, BONNER & PARTNERS

Bitcoin booms during bad times…

That’s the big takeaway from today’s chart. It looks at the price of bitcoin in U.S. dollar terms going back to 2015.

As you can see, each time there is a spike in geopolitical stress, the price of bitcoin goes higher.

The best way to think of bitcoin is as “virtual gold.”

It’s outside of the control of central banks… it allows you to hold savings outside of the banking system… and it’s not vulnerable to a sovereign debt collapse.

When the big kahuna Bill warns about hits, expect to see the price of bitcoin soar.

Yeah that will be interesting. Will there be a BTC pull back? Will others alts rise? Both? Neither? Fun times ahead.

It's happening guys. ETH is approaching bitcoin's market cap much quicker than I expected. I've been spending an obscene amount of time reading various crypto forums and subreddits and watching the ETH/BTC market lately and all signs are pointing to ETH overtaking bitcoin as the dominant crypto in terms of market cap in the near future. We're talking end of July or so conservative estimate as the August 1 UASF decision for bitcoin looms and within the next week or two as a real possibility at this point.

Technical indicators:
https://www.flippening.watch/
https://rolandkofler.github.io/flipper/

-massive volume the last 24 hours. out pacing bitcoin again for the third or fourth time I think.
-further decoupling between ETH and bitcoin. In the last big crash a couple weeks ago, BTC and ETH both dropped violently, while ETH recovered much quicker. Took only a day or say while BTC took two weeks to test the ATH near 3k again before crashing violently again just recently. And look at how well ETH has recovered again. It's a sea of red across the board today aside from ETH hanging on in the green still.

Pulse of the people i.e. crypto investor indicators:

-with the poloniex trollbox disabled, r/ethtrader has basically become the defacto trading hub it seems. Today it peaked at over 20,000 active readers at one time. Pretty crazy considering that all the active readers of every bitcoin subreddit couldn't match even half that number.

-people are talking about ETH everywhere in the crypto community. every single bitcoin subreddit is full of ETH salt and people continuing to parrot the same 'bitcoin is fine, nothing to see here, all the money will flow back to bitcoin' narrative. meanwhile other altcoin reddits like those at r/ripple and r/xmrtrader are lamenting missing the ETH rocket and rationalizing their bagholding. the poor souls at r/ripple have got it the worst. 'Just hold your XRP it's gonna be $5 once all the banks are using it just wait' tard GL with that. ETH is also breaching r/all, r/wallstreetbets, mainstream news publications (bloomberg seems to be hyping it every other weeks), everywhere. I mean just look at the activity in this thread lately compared to the bitcoin thread.

see your average crypto trader now:

-thinking about crypto as a whole, this whole market is still based entirely on speculation. One of the main arguments against ETH Bitcoin maximalists like to throw out all the time is 'you can't even use it for anything.' but at this point you can barely use bitcoin for anything either. Sure, I can buy Steam games or some online stuff with certain vendors, but in terms of mainstream adoption its still very limited. everything bitcoin is doing now as a currency ETH will be able to do as well. so if you are gonna speculate you might as well speculate on the best coin out there.

At this point the Flippening seems inevitable. I know it, you know it, everyone knows it. Just ask yourself what you think is more likely at this point, that ETH makes up the last 10 billion or so to catch up to bitcoin's marketcap, OR that the entire alt bubble crashes and all the money flows back to bitcoin while they simultaneously resolve their community infighting and peacefully agree to and implement a scaling solution. I know which bet I'm taking.

I recently unloaded the last of my bitcoins for ETH aside from a token coin I'll keep for small purchases and what not. I'll actually be sad when the flip is over as I've been making a killing exclusively riding margin longs on the ETH/BTC pair all the way up from .05 to now. Hard to call myself a trader but it's working for me and I'm still too conservative to mess with the other alts right now. I think its safe to open a position again whenever this latest dip ends and the price stabilizes. The flip point is at .1773 ETH/BTC. No idea what to expect after that but it's not gonna be for the faint of heart, so just remember if you are in it for the long haul it's probably just better to hold.

RE: The Ethereum Thread (the alt coin to Bitcoin)
Not all based upon speculation - ditzy bizcuit just raised real $7M ITO (Initial Token Offering) in less time it takes to get a decent nut off - to sell space on EHCR Net:

I’ll take my healthcare in cryptocurrency, please.
Troy Bannister

Blockchain has a lot of buzz around it today, but the applications and implementations have just begun.

As I clicked “buy” on my new Coinbase dashboard, I watched as my bank account confirmed a transaction from Bank of America to a vague, unregulated analog — Ethereum. Years ago, I had become intrigued by the cryptocurrency story that was unfolding in the lives of my tech-oriented friends, but it was only recently, when I spoke with Chrissa McFarlane, CEO of Patientory — who used cryptocurrency last week to raise $7.2 million in a matter of days — that I understood what it meant for healthcare.

Essentially, what Chrissa did was sell virtual coins that represent space in which to store health data on the Patientory network. This type of fundraising is a relatively new and powerful way to raise capital to build a product for users — who, by purchasing coins, literally own the digital space in which the product lives. Initial coin offerings (ICOs) have been making the news lately for raising huge amounts of money with unthinkable speed, like the ICO of the former Mozilla CEO that raised $35 million in 24 seconds.

Now, as Chrissa and her team continue building their business with these very funds — adding customers, analytics, APIs, EMRs — they are creating a completely distributed universe of unhackable, real-time, interoperable patient data for their coin holders.

As the company grows, so does the demand for the data and access to the platform, with the coin’s value increasing alongside that demand.

Chrissa McFarlane, CEO of Patientory.

When I first met Chrissa more than a year ago she was just beginning her journey to solve one of healthcare’s most sinister and convoluted problems: the digital stringing together of a fragmented and insecure health system.

Traditionally, servers run in their own isolated code silos, making it really hard to share data. However, with blockchain, anyone can create a miniature server on their own device that replicates all the necessary parts of other miniature servers so there is no one place to hack, break, or lose information.

The real zinger here is that Patientory offers more than just cyber security to its customers. It also offers a complete population health management solution unlike any other, in so far as the platform itself is distributed among patients, making it impossible to leak data. We all saw what happened with the WannaCry Ransomware in the UK. What Chrissa is offering solves for the estimated $2 trillion in cybersecurity damage predicted by 2019.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Ethereum, the cryptocurrency Patientory has chosen to build off of, is its own coding language, which gives it some interesting advantages over other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. First and foremost, it’s incredibly useful. How about tying coins to patient metrics? Imagine an insurance company offering coins for patients who are able to lower their A1C levels by 2% before their next check-up. For those who do, their lab results automatically trigger the release of a coin. It’s one of those rare win-win-win-wins that totally removes middle management.

These so-called ‘smart contracts’ emulate the logic of contractual clauses. The patient wants to save money and get healthy, the insurance company wants to pay less than the cost of a sick patient by keeping them healthy, the provider has a seamless diagnostic, communication, and reimbursement process, and the data is on a single, safe, private, and interoperable platform — all without any paperwork or middlemen.

What’s really amazing about all of this is how interconnected it is. Instead of a patient thinking, ‘If I skip the doctor’s office, I can save $150”, the patient will now think, “If I get better, I can earn tokens.”

It’s almost poetic, in a sense, how a patient’s money, data and health can become nearly indistinguishable. With Patientory, it’s difficult to understand where one ends and the next begins.

This is not a run-of-the-mill product; it’s a paradigm-shifting solution. It’s also an important development in healthcare as we look towards a future still unsolved in its incentive, payment, and data architecture.

Patientory is forward thinking, ambitious, daunting and complex. And it’s something we can take advantage of today.

RE: The Ethereum Thread (the alt coin to Bitcoin)
I was thinking that XMR had pretty much left me in the dust.

Several months ago, I had a few buy orders fill between about $16 and $10. I started selling small amounts at about $35, and when price went up to $50, I thought that my low ball orders were not going to get filled, and I reset some more buy orders between $25 and $12 on Bitfinex, and a large number of them were filled today, which pretty much doubled my XMR holdings and the price quickly returned to $45 plus.

The essence of the story is that it might not hurt to keep a few low ball orders out there, just in case there are thin books and some extreme fat fingered dump or something.

RE: The Ethereum Thread (the alt coin to Bitcoin)
Well I bought a measly 1.38 something ETH today at 378. I'm holding about 10 ETH right now but I originally bought in under $100. I really wish I had gone all in at that time but I was being conservative since that was literally my first ever crypto purchase.

Getting in early for long term holders is really so important and I see that now. It's fucking insane how quickly things can change in crypto. I bought my first ever crypto less than a month ago. In 3 weeks my asset value has fucking tripled. Ridiculous. Can't imagine how the people feel who invested when the shit was under $40 or even $10.

I'm looking to hold long term now and look for another long term coin to hold. I'm leaning towards SIA coin and Golem (GNT)

ETH/BTC is now approaching 0.15. Insane.

The flippening, when ETH becomes #1 in market cap, looks to be about 0.18. Not that far off.

And I was worried buying ETH at $97 was going to be a bad move a month ago.

My initial investment in ETH was when I switched over from BTC when it was at $48. Then I bought more at $97, and again at $125. Played around with buy/sell limit orders between that and $180.

Now I am holding on for dear life. Logic tells me to sell at the top, but the flippening hasn't even happened yet.

Knowing how crazy things are, it might reach flippening level and then go up another 20%. If that happens I will cash out.

Hold until the winter holidays at least.

I started buying ETH when it was worth just about $2 and periodically bought more over the last couple of years. I hold mid six figures in ETH now.

Having a clear understanding of Ethereum and the blockhain (or any altcoin) is crucial. You must read whitepapers and buy for the long term as there are many pump and dumb shitcoins around.

RE: The Ethereum Thread (the alt coin to Bitcoin)
Saw it drop down to the low/mid 300s today and just checked that it's back up to 400.

I'm hoping there's another mild drop, not a huge crash, so I can buy more low. But I'm also thinking about diversifying into some other risky plays out of this space as well.

The ideas behind Ethereum seem to have good potential. I'm loosely familiar with the ideas from the tech side (encryption), and it's not beyond my near term capability to build something on this. I will be exploring this space a little when my time frees up a bit.

I have had this happen to me a few times, but usually it does not double my holdings in whatever asset. I just got lucky. hahahahaha

I have also seen it happen on a variety of exchanges during volatility phases, and frequently kicking myself because I did not have any orders open on that exchange or that I had cancelled some of my orders.

This kind of luck can really only happen if you are not spread out too thin, and it can be kind of third-party exchange risky because you have to be willing to leave a certain amount of money on the order books for a period of time.

It can happen quite extensively with various ICOs because the order books are frequently going to be thin, and become even more thin when there is a lot of trading activity and confusion in the market.

RE: The Ethereum Thread (the alt coin to Bitcoin)
Here we are what a extraordinary last few days.

I think the ETH/BTC has been suppressed far too long by whales trying to get convert BTC to ETH at a discount, but more importantly the exploitation of buying BTC on margin.

I'm not sure how familiar people are with margin, but I do it a lot. BTC is the reserve currency, at least for now, and I've been margin trading HTY, ULE, GMN, OLI, etc. all the high-risk pump and dumps.

That was a joke I just made up all those coins, but it cements my point further. There are tons of coins that no one knows about, most of them are only exchanged by BTC. People like me have been going nuts buying BTC on margin and artificially raising it's value. We borrow BTC, do some sort of trades, then settle (buy-back) into BTC. It appears those days are coming to an end, and ETH will soon surpass BTC in market cap. This is happening fairly quickly. (We are not there yet, however).

Further, I've seen some comments that the price of ETH has skyrocketed because people are looking for ways to go 10x, and it seems easier to that with ETH than BTC. This is somewhat true, but I still disagree. It has skyrocketed and has been doing so since the single digits because of the pipeline and its roadmap.

The true power of ETH lies in its ability to make smart contracts. Think of these as legal agreements that are coded in Ethereum's own programming language, Solidity. They operate exactly as the code is written so cannot be tampered with. With these smart contracts, developers have been able to create platforms on top of the ethereum network, decentralized apps (dAPPs). This is BAT, GNT, REP, etc. all the ERC20-tokens. This is the true power of the Ethereum network. Complete decentralization for a wide variety of applications and tasks. Bitcoin cannot do this, and will not do this in the foreseeable future. Anyone who is claiming otherwise is delusional and lying to you.

To do anything on the network you need to consume gas, which is paid for in ether. Gas prevents spam attacks on the network, as you must pay for usage. All these dApps, transactions, ICO contributions, etc., all require gas, which must be paid in ether. As usage of ether increases, so will it's price. Gas is periodically adjusted for any increases in ether so that it doesn't adversely effect the network.

This brings me to ETC - people have been saying ETH is too high I'm going just buy ETC. I think this is the wrong line of reasoning. Technically, ETC is the original blockchain of ETH, but it was hardforked during a malciious event. I think everyone in their right mind, except the hackers, would agree the hardfork was the right thing. No one really supported it's formation, it is merely the original blockchain with the malicious activity in its history. Buying ETC is just buying an imitation of ETH without the development roadmap, team, future, etc. It is only going up because of ETH. I wouldn't recommend buying it. I don't think ETC will be able to incorporate all the new developments from Metropolis and Casper, which are upcoming shortly. The ETH foundation has hundreds of millions dollars in funding now because the price of ETH has gotten so high. They have tons of money for developers, training, etc. for years. It is unlikely a new developer is going to come in and overtake that.

However, everyone should still be careful. Does ETH not have any obstacles? Technically, we are not at a level that is truly scalable. It is much faster and technologically advanced than BTC, but the network needs more capabilities. They are working to release Raiden soon, which will dramatically increase the transaction times. Some people have said 1,000,0000 tx/sec. Visa will take notice then, if they haven't already.

The things above should change the world, but from a personal perspective, I think the biggest value is the shift to Proof-of-Stake (PoS). The team is planning to transition from mining to staking. In staking, you will run a node and use coins to stake. Instead of mining coins (like Bitcoin does), they will be staking. You're node will be used to verify transactions on the network. In exchange, you will receive 8% interest for your coins. The current inflation rate is approximately 14.8%, PoS will bring this down to 8%, however, with ether constantly being burned from gas usage inflation will be essentially zero.

You will get 8% for doing absolutely nothing but running a computer. If I throw some pie in the sky math. Let's assume ETH is $1,000 and you stake 1,000 coins. You will receive 80 ETH each year at a market value of $80,000. Of course there is currency fluctuation risk, but this may be the single best passive income, location independent source of money, in our lifetimes. The specifics are still being worked out, but it will likely be staking in the form of 3-4 month contracts. I have been talking with some people heavy into this, and I anticipate staking pools will emerge, similar to mining pools.

Too good to be true? I think not, more like a genius autistic Russian programmer with the head the size of a basketball. I suspect Vitalik has been stacking lego's in the shape of L's until last week, "Vitalik you don't need to do that anymore, brah". As I said it before, the Asperger is strong in this realm.

So here are my predictions for the future: (1) ETH surpasses BTC in marketcap within the next 6 motnhs, (2) ETH hits $500 at some point between now and the end of the year. Many people may think these are obvious, others think they're outrageous. We shall see.

We've gone from talking about ETH in the BTC thread, now people are talking about Monero in here. What a journey. I think most of the BTC maximalmists have seen the writing on the wall at this point, but let's be kind to the other one's still in denial.

If that's the case, I want in, too.

Good post, and this sounds great. But I have questions on how this will work exactly.

What if I keep my ETH in a hard wallet, would I benefit from the stake?

Or do I have to put my ETH in a specific place (or within a contract) to earn interest?

And how do you get in a staking pool?
