Vehemently disagree with you on this, TM.

Who here criticizing Dao is praising corporations? He handled the incident like a petulant child x 10,000.

This idea that if you disagree with some enforcement action that you should physically resist is beyond the pale.

Carolla's take is probably the best I have heard on the matter.

US consumers are very often opportunistic sheep. Unlike many other cases of fine print, offloading passengers due to overbooking is very well documented.

The US is the most litigious society in the world, but one of the ones least interested in preempting these sorts of situations involving people being kicked off planes.

I am aware that the plane was allegedly NOT overbooked, but the point is that this situation would never have happened if:

a) the crazy doctor were an adult;
b) he hadn't "sold" drugs for gay sex and had his medical practice restricted to a day a week;
c) consumers actually protested these rules en masse BEFORE they found themselves offloaded and airlines responded by stopping all related practices altogether; and
d) people stopped demanding a lot for virtually nothing, with many airlines not even breaking even on actual airfares.

There seems to be a sense of entitlement amongst many US consumers to the point where they demand that a business take close to a loss to deliver a good or service, without the business finding other ways to keep operations going.

Your post history definitely demonstrates your high value. The fact you've made over 4000+ of them in a year is clearly the definitive proof that it's true...

Having briefly browsed your history, nearly every one of your 4000+ posts is of high value, not just a mix of self-aggrandizing smarmy crap, conspiracy theories or dings against other members. Big Grin

The captain of an aircraft has the authority of who is and is not on the aircraft manifest. Period. Although good public relations is necessary for a profitable air carrier the captain holds the final word. If I tell you to get off my aircraft, you are off my aircraft. I do not need to answer to you the cargo. You do not hold authority to the seat just because you purchased a ticket. Get your snowflake ass off my plane! We will try and get you another in a reasonable amount to time. Pilots are generally good people in my experience but when push come to shove its best to be accommodating to their request or you get dragged off. As it should be.

Sounds like a great way to get put on an extended leave of absence for making corporate look bad.

I know what you're talking about.

I'm a big fan of inviting a bunch of friends to my house for dinner and telling them that dinner is at 6. Once everyone arrives, I inform that the food is almost ready and disappear into the kitchen for two and a half hours. Then just as my hungry guests are about to sit down to eat, I demand that they all leave immediately. Haha!

At first they think it's a joke, but then I tell them that if the don't stop trespassing, I'll call the police to have them removed.

Does this make me a dick?

Doesn't matter. The law is on my side. And that's all the matters in this discussion.

As it should be.

Well based on this example it sounds like that scenario would make you a dick but you're right - the law is on your side and if your friends don't leave willingly then they should be removed by the police for trespassing if they refuse to leave on their own. You didn't tell everyone to leave though; just enough people to make room for your unexpected family members who showed up at the last minute and now the table is full so unfortunately the friend has to go before everyone else can sit and eat.

They'd be smart to spend their time and energy on finding new friends in the future instead of hanging on to your chair and screaming like children that they aren't leaving until they eat. Unfortunately, it sounds like all their other possible friends that have a table to eat at do the exact same thing to them from time to time so they just have to hope you're in a better mood next time and take the money you're legally required to give them for four times what their cost was to arrive at your table.

RE: United Airlines PR fiasco - police forcibly remove man from overbooked flight
So apparently as long as someone has the legal authority to do something, hes right to do it.

So for instance, if I had the legal right to gas undesirables, and I did it, nobody should protest because "well the law does say he can do that -- so they should get in the fucking chamber!!".

I'm not saying there are any authority-fetish fruitloops in this thread, but it seems to me that if someone has the authority to do something wrong, the question should be "how do we remove that authority?" not "why doesn't everyone just obey his authority?".

I guess blind deference to law and authority is just easier. Strange coming from Americans of all people given their past.

Nope, none of that is true. All my family members are dead and there is never any justifiable reason for me to kick my friends out of my house.

Sometimes I even burn down my mansion after everyone leaves.

It's just a fun little gag to pull.

Sure my friends are pissed at the time, but it's something we all laugh about later.

After all, the law is on my side.

Suits is exaggerating.

His table only fits five people plus himself but he invites six on the presumption that at least one will flake.

Then if all six turn up, he stalks the room with a baseball bat asking who wants to voluntarily fuck off to McDonalds. He's nice about it though. He offers a coupon for a free cheeseburger.

He could have simply decided not to proceed through security and board his flight and there's no question that he could have kept his transformer then.

Sounds like the law was on their side, so it's fine.

I had the choice to leave, put it in a checked bag and try to get on the flight but it's doubtful I would have made it at that point so I decided to toss it. Ultimately it was a case of $200 not being worth another day in Dubai or arguing further and getting tossed in a UAE prison.

In other words, I behaved like an adult -- not like the petulant gay doctor you keep on supporting.
