Unfortunately, I fly United Airline a lot to Asia and Across the USA with plenty of miles to spare.

I plan to boycott and forego my mileage plan in favor of Delta Airlines

I only previous flew UA, due to the fact I am base in LAX.

My review and experience of United has always been disappointing.

There cabin crew will always consist of nearly senior citizen age flight attendants who are only working/pretending to be there waiting for their pension, furthermore the staff are very pro-feminist and union workers, and any request for water or question about the flight management, will be met with intense prejudice.

The plane's interior is rather old inside and outside, their uniform looks like shit as always.

Before boarding you will be greeted by the unfriendly sky staff that consistently received department of dmv style training, I'm surprised United hasn't added a queue number system to decide who gets on board first.

Whatever is legal, right or ethical doesn't matter at this point.

Guy should've just got off the plane, the airline should have handled it better.

It's very clear to me who had leverage here and they somehow managed to fuck that up massively - they played themselves. PR disaster and possible civil case.

Bravo UA, I don't think I could've fucked that up better myself.

99,9% of passengers don't get thrown out of the airplane, they simply are not allowed to enter the plane due to overbooking. First come first serve is the rule. Priority bookings and higher class is allowed to go first, economy last - if you happen to be among them, bad luck. At worst you are pissed off, but that is life - people would be much more pissed off if they were already sitting down and then had to leave.

As others may have already pointed out, this isn't even about overbooking according to their terms and the commonly understood definition. The correct number of tickets were sold - no paid passenger was left without a seat. It was the crew deadheading that United tried to jimmie into the aircraft at the last second.

They even violated their own terms of service with respect to denial of boarding - these people were already boarded. Too late to make changes based on that.

The whole economic rationale is bullshit because it's plainly obvious that you couldn't apply the same ethic to any other industry without being wildly out of touch with national standards.

Imagine having a booking at a restaurant, having to pay in advance and when you arrive them telling you "sorry, but we've overbooked and we're going to give you a voucher for your next meal here. I hope you understand, but overbooking to maintain full occupancy on all tables helps us keep our costs down and you just happen to be the unlucky person we've bumped today."

You'd demand your money back and tell them you were never going to eat at their shitty restaurant again.

Airlines should be straight up and sell bumpable and non-bumpable tickets separately. Or just add a fee for the whole "non-negotiable" thing to actually work both ways. At least that way people could get the sense that being fucked by the overbooking lottery was a chance they inherently took on their own heads.

I fly United frequently and I don't find this to be the case. - I'm not saying that the flight attendants are all beautiful and friendly, but they aren't any worse than what I've encountered on other airlines. In fact I've had much worse experiences on discount airlines like Frontier (which I swear I will never fly again)- you get what you pay for I suppose.

Let's face it, air travel sucks, for all airlines. Due to mergers, consolidation, and dismantling of regulation, the few big airlines know they have monopoly power and therefore have no incentive to improve. The incident with the doctor is a prime example of that. Much like actuaries, when selling seats United can rely on the free market and all of its permutations, using computer models to predict the most popular destinations, the busiest times of year for travel, how many bags people are likely to bring, etc., in order to figure out what to charge and maximize profits. However, when trying to buy seats back, they abandon free market capitalism and resort to brute force. They could have offered up to $1350 (I think) for those seats but stopped at $800 even though there were no takers. Why? Because they knew they could. Why pay when you can just drag someone off (they didn't predict the backlash, of course)? This is the same thing monopolies have done throughout history- a quick review of the relationship between the robber barrons of the 19th and 20th centuries and their customers and especially employees will confirm this.

This doctor did us all a big favor for bringing this to light by refusing to go along with it. Air travel is getting so terrible. They are treating us like garbage, when they just kick somebody off to make room for their crew. Don't think it can't happen to you. If it doesn't get better, it is going to keep getting worse.
