I met a guy who did a big travel in his 20s back in 1975. He had to do it all by boat, which was still a thing back then.

I traveled to Europe in the 1970s and I wasn't rich. It was actually affordable.

Confirmed by CNN:
This was not an overbooking, it was to get 4 employees on.

I'm very annoyed not at the fact that they removed the guy, but they Lied saying that the plane was overbooked. That is actually more insulting than calling the cops or not upping the voucher. This IS the big deal. Because if the guy had complied, they wouldn't have been found out cheating. Also they lied initially at the time of incident AND the aftermath too saying it was overbooked and tried blaming even the passenger.

Witness accounts from the couple sitting behind the guy contradicts with what united said. Hey said he never raised his voice. So where did united get those facts from? And now they are saying he wasn't beligerent.

Now this gets interesting. Let's see how it boils down now.

United was clearly in the wrong. From a logistics standpoint, this is inexcusable.

This overbooking/deadhead/or some combination thereof or whatever situation is like an undergraduate statistics or economics homework problem ("Assume the distribution of passengers who arrive for a given boarding is Poisson-distributed..."), and/or an HBS case study that would make Podunk-U students wonder "how stupid does HBS think we are, as to pose such a retarded make-believe case study?"

Police should not be acting upon the whims of corporations.

The conversation between United and the police should had been like:

United: "We have an uncooperative passenger that needs to be removed."
Police: "Okay... is he or she a threat to security?"
United: "Well... not exactly, but not enough passengers accepted our offer to be 'voluntary removed' from our already-boarded-flight so we 'randomly' picked someone."
Police: "Sounds like you need to sweeten your pot. Fuck off... we're not your henchmen in a corporate-espionage-novel. Deal with it."

It's a simple case of an airline offering a shitty vouchers finally biting them in the ass. If they had any brains they would have had a special rule in place where no one on board refuses to leave they have the ability to up the price as needed on the voucher before stupidly calling in police.

It's a simple litmus test, if they couldn't get enough people off the plane then the voucher price was too low. You want to get people off a plane? Legal prostitution at airports and have a special VIP area where you can wait for your next connecting flight while getting drunk and receiving blowjobs. Every single man(or married if alone) would be fighting to get off the plane. If people aren't willing to get off the plane then thats simply tells you the airlines are fucking people over.

Nope, that's the minimum amount they have to offer before kicking people off (well, the smaller of that and 4x the fare, hence why they got away with $800 in this case). There's no cap.

4x the fare is very low for short destinations.

On the other hand, if I was flying JFK to SF or LA and it was the last flight out of town on a Sunday night, 1350 voucher still won't be enough for me and prob wouldn't be enough for many people if they don't wanna miss work the next morning.

The statement from the police, if I recall, was that they had received a report that the passenger was disorderly, which I'd bet is almost certainly true. Flight attendants are just as susceptible to making up false accusations and exaggerating problems to get their way as anybody else. If a United employee lied to the police in order to get the passenger manhandled, that's going to be two tons of fun in court.

When people try to involve the police in any other business dispute, I believe the usual line is "this is a civil matter" - even when it isn't really, they usually don't want to be in the middle of it.

Just read this article, pointing out that the flight was not overbooked, and therefore United may face even greater problems than the PR disaster and likely lawsuit from the Doctor.

The article makes a distinction that overbooked is when they sell more seats than they have available. In this case, they did not sell excess seats. All of the paid tickets had seats.

They were throwing off paid customers so they could let their employees fly. The laws covering overbooking are apparently very specific, and don't allow the airlines to throw off paid passengers when seats are available.

I hate overbooking, and I find air travel to be an amazingly shitty experience, but I find myself flying 10-15 times a year and can't avoid it. That's not to mention the shitty experience in the baggage check lines and the security lines at the airports.

I'm very happy to see the airlines stumble and get a good reaming. I bet a majority of their customers hate them.

Edit: I see this was already mentioned. I'm feeling some real good schadenfreude here over United's trouble. I hope they're fucked good.
