The size of the sensor. Full Frame means the camera's sensor is equivalent to a 35mm film camera. The bigger the sensor, the more image detail the camera will capture.

this is correct - and i will add that overall there will be more depth to your images. the bigger the sensor (and aperture), the more obvious the pleasing image blur (bokeh) will be. That is oversimplifying, but correct. full frame is simply higher quality in many ways, and it will show in your images.

the tiny photo sensors in smart phones is the main reason you will *rarely* get an optically blurred background out of your phone - apple and others are now creating software that will 'blur' your background for you, but it wont happen optically.

My last DSLR was the konica-minolta 5d. Used it for animation. I think it still works, but the pop up flash doesn't work well anymore and the company went out of business. How much better are the new cameras compared to it. It was 6 megapixels and in camera image stabilization.

In the last months I've been shooting raw with my Samsung s7 and became pretty good at editing in Adobe Raw and Adobe Photoshop.

Now I'm thinking to go to the next level and buy a camera. However, at the moment my budget is only 500-600$.

I have 2 questions for the guys who know photography.

1. Do you think Canon 1300D with the kit lens is better than my Samsung s7?

2. Do you have any other recommendations in that price range? Maybe a mirrorless camera?

Photography is my hobby too. when I started I didn't have any knowledge of photography, but I had seen some article or two that really helped me a lot. Hope you can find something like that too.

First of all, buy used. It will depreciate less and still give you a great bang for you buck, especially if you are a beginner.

The Canon will give you a different look. With good lighing, it's better; but whether or not it's worth the investment really depends on what you're going for.

For image quality:

Glass (lens) + good lighting > (camera) body

Never underestimate the difference a good lens can make.





With that budget, you could get a Canon T6 or T5i with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. The T5i is a little more expensive but it has a higher ISO ceiling (the ISO is the sensor's sensibility to light), which is important to you because your kit lens is quite dark.

The kit lens is crap but it's enough to dip your feet and see if you want to invest further - in that case, you can keep the camera body and get better glass.

Love the camera so far, debating which lens to get though.

Should I go 50mm 1.4 or 1.8?

Whichever's cheaper. You're not going to notice much of a difference as a first-time DLSR photographer

The f1.8 is one of the best bang for buck lenses out there. The f1.4 is not very sharp wide open (so what's the point, right?). Easy choice.

Yeah I have read a lot of reviews, some say the 1.4 is better for low light and a little cleaner.

I have used the Sigma Art 50mm 1.4 and it is simply amazing. The price is a bit steep for me right now and double the price of the Canon 1.4 50mm.

I am thinking 24 - 105mm Canon as my big purchase.

This isn't my first DSLR camera and I am not new to the game.

I do love me some bokeh as well.

I'm moving and will probably stay mobile for a while, so I decided to get rid of my clunky DSLR kit (Canon 60D, 24-105mm f4 and two primes).

I've just bought a Fuji XT20 with the 18-55mm f2.8-4 as a replacement - it arrives today.

Although there are many mirrorless cameras at this price range, I chose the XT20 because I was fascinated with the physical dials and image aesthetics.

The Sony A6300 and the Olympus E-M10 Mark III were close seconds, although both offer different strong points.

Could you compare the weight between the two cameras. I'm thinking of eventually getting a mirrorless due to the weight. It was a chore to lug around A DSLR with a few lens. Some of those mirrorless lens might be heavy too.

Indeed. The weight comparison is right on my post if you read it again. The whole Fuji setup weighs about the same as the 24-105mm by itself.

Another thing that spiked my interest in the mirrorless systems is the fact that they are less conspicous than DSLRs.

I really enjoy street photography and taking candid shots, but everytime I pull my 60D everyone around me zooms in on the camera. People suddenly become very mindful of the fact that I can photograph them and it changes the dynamic and the atmosphere.

Hopefully a smaller camera will help with that.

Let us know how that works out for you Ringo. I'm still on the fence about the upgrade path from my 6d, the new Sony A7III looks mighty tempting but I'll have to reinvest in a lens system. I'm curious to know your thoughts on the Fuji system after you've settled into it for awhile, even the new X-H1 would be nice to have both a good stills and 4k video camera.
