Football agents have network in the government. They can speed up the process significantly, otherwise it would take more than few years.

He is a not-very famous (but pro) player, ans actually has rescinded his professional contract both with club and former agent, so, only his (quite powerful, granted) family helped him.

I don't remember exactly how long ago he started the whole Italian process, one and a half year ago I think... Now he's off to Italia to complete the last steps, and well, maybe also sign for a (League 2) club that a friend of mine, found for him. Fingers crossed!

Then, I don't know.

But if a player arrives to Italy from Brazil or Argentina, if he is eligible of having Italian citizenship, agents help them out really fast and they gain citizenship in a week or two.

Driussi, who is from Argentina, is the last example. He just got his citizenship in 2 weeks in September but if you are average person, it would take years.

Driussi plays in a European first division, he's therefore already a star, millionaire, with three blonde Russian girlfriends, and king of the world.

My friend on the other hand comes from League 2 of South America, and in order to find a club without hindrance, has full ownership of his transfer and no current agent (players hate giving money to agents). He trusts he'll be able, with his family and help from a few friends, to find a club and complete the paperwork for Italian passport.

Foot pros, there are 2 kinds of:

Those who have at least a couple of games in League 1, starting as titular, with TV images to show, staying on pitch 80 or 90 minutes, preferably with one assistancy or goal.

Those who don't.

First kind are the (pagan) gods of our times. Second type are fighting like mad to survive and hopefully become gods, too.

Am I understanding correctly, you can claim Italian nationality because four generations ago 1 of the 16 people that gave origin to the people that would later give origin to you was Italian? Is this really possible?

This is not a jab at you and if you can take advantage of the system because it's set up that way then definitely do it but I think at least 1 of the 4 grandparents should have the nationality you're applying for, and you should prove at least certain cultural bonds to the country, such as a rudimentary proficiency of the language, traveling there when you were younger or whatever.

Again, this is nothing against you, I just think the system is flawed, but good luck and let us know how it goes.

Yes, it is Italian law. You can have Italian citizenship if your great-great grandfather was born in Italy. It's a long process but it's doable.

As long as you can prove it, you can get it. Whether he was born in Italy in 1820 or 1920.

Correct.

I will say this though - if my great grandparents, grandparents, and then my own parents had stayed *on top of stuff*, they could have simply continued passing it on for the foreseeable future. Then it would be far less "claiming it" and far more "inheriting"

So I'd argue this - is it fair to punish me and not grant it because they decided it wasn't worth it?

Actually yes, it would be perfectly fair, and it's not a matter of punishing you, why would it be fair for you to be allowed to claim/inherit a nationality that you're only 1/16th of?

(11-22-2017 02:53 AM)This Is Trouble Wrote:  Better be in English Confused

This is what I meant, do you have any other ties to the country, culture or people? You don't speak the language and yet you can claim their nationality as if you're one of their own? I know you just want the passport to be able to travel free of hassle in Europe, and that's fine, like I mentioned before, if the system allows you to do this then by all means, take advantage of it, this is nothing against you but the system itself is stupid.

Well, but after spending so much time and money in this issue, it would be amateurish that you can not speak the language they will use in the interview. Unless you are fluent in Italian.
In your shoes I would try to confirm this asap.

RE: Acquiring an Italian Passport
I'm planning to go to Italy in April to get my citizenship done.

Currently talking to multiple attorneys/consulting agencies to get estimates on the total cost. At this point the cheapest is charging over 3000 EUR, which include housing for the period (45 days) in a shared apartment and a few other perks.

Has anyone here used those to get it done in Italy?

If so, please PM me.

Got to start learning Italian asap.

That seems like a reasonable price from my perspective.

I'm Brazilian.

3600EUR is not terrible but I expected less - around 2500EUR. 3600EUR is currently ~14k BRL, more than 14x minimum monthly wage. Let's say it's definitely not "cheap" by Brazilian standards.

Also, all consulting companies I've talked to offer housing because the official government employee must visit you at your Italian home at one point in the process. So there seems to be no way out of that (so far no company has confirmed it would be possible to hire their services while managing housing on my own, renting an AirBNB for example).

Still shopping around and getting estimates, I'll report back once I have more figures.

I am down to just needing one document to actually submit my application. It's my great-great grandmother's birth cert, who was born in some village in the middle of nowhere, I guess. I submitted it months ago and have nothing, but recently found more info about her so I am hopeful this pushes it over the edge.

So all documents are in possession, though some need to be certified and translated still. My hope is to time an interview with the embassy for Christmas time in the States so I can get home, too.

Total time period since I truly started working on this is closing in on about a year and 3 months.

Have you used a lawyer or a service to do all the legwork, finding documents and legal stuff etc. or have you done most of it yourself? If you've used a lawyer or service, how much has it cost?

Honestly, I ended up getting a ton of help from my mom. She is hoping to get one herself which will give her and my dad some retirement options.

AND:

She had to do a lot of it anyway. I was not eligible to request many documents, it had to come from a direct grandchild and not a great-grandchild.

Still shopping around and getting estimates, I'll report back once I have more figures.

Update:

After talking to many consultants/lawyers, I narrowed my choice down to two people.

One is unknown to me, found online, and charges 4500EUR for the whole process (housing included). Highly praised online via multiple unrelated sources (I searched thoroughly). I was very interested in hiring this person. We went back and forth via email, but after trying to schedule a Skype call (at a date of their choice) this person disappeared. So that's a definite no.

The other one has worked with multiple people I know and is highly recommended. This professional was the safe choice. The same "package" as above would cost 5500EUR. Great service but I thought the cost was too high. Tried negotiating - denied.

I have more time than money to spend, and I wasn't 100% comfortable with my choices, so I made a decision. "Fuck it. I'll do it myself".

I was planning on staying in Europe for a while anyways, so I'll take the 5+ thousand euros I'd spend on this process and use it to live in Italy for 3-5 months while I learn Italian and get through the citizenship process.

I've talked to a bunch of people who went through the process and I don't expect it to be a walk in the park but I know I'll figure it out, and I'll get a much greater bang for my buck in the form of new experiences.

I leave Brazil in April and am currently researching towns to set up residence for the period. On the plus side, I'll have plenty of idle time to work out, develop new projects and travel.

MAJOR UPDATE

All the documents are here and in my hands.

DHL completed ripped me off because they were simply lazy and incompetent. Ended up costing nearly $600 to send some pieces of paper from California to EE.

That whole story is here: https://twitter.com/KyleTrouble/status/1...9184854016

But, in any case, am aiming to spend a month in Italy come September and really apply for this...

Do you intend on applying for a citizenship directly in italy?

In that case, one month will not be enough time.

Using an agency.

Unfortunately there are no appointments at my home Italian embassy in the US for years, so I'm left with this option.

But are you applying as a resident, even though you won't be living here?

Not to be obnoxious, but make sure you do your research and are on the right side of things. It's still possible to do it - many people do it every year. But the surveillance on residents has been increasing due to the growth in citizenship requests and under the table schemes.

Earlier this year over 1.000 Brazilians had their citizenships cancelled for fraud - their setup was clearly absurd but these types of occurrences have been making authorities more mindful of applications.
