RE: Jordan B Peterson: A Real Intellectual
I've listened to a few more of his podcasts/videos, etc. I think he's very thought-provoking and learned, for sure. I like him. The only thing that really turned me off and gave me that, "Awww, Man, you fucking blew it" moment was when he introduced linguistics into his argument against Harris.

Senate to Bill Clinton: "Did you have sexual intercourse with this woman? Yes or no?"

Clinton: "What do you mean by 'have'?"

He's like a slippery eel in the weeds and people are throwing 100 spears at him all at once and he just has this weak-ass, and frankly offensive to the intellect, defense. That was disappointing, but I've really enjoyed listening to him and I appreciate this thread.

The Harris podcasts suck but that's because of the subject matter.

LOL, it certainly is "offensive" to *your* intellect, as evidenced by the defensive projection it elicits from your intellect.

Quote:The Harris podcasts suck but that's because of the subject matter.

The Harris podcast amply illustrates not only JP's point about the incoherence of claiming that the only truth comes from empirical science, it also shows Sam's complete lack of self-awareness.

Here's another example of these "atheists" demonstrating their complete lack of awareness and self deception (start at 1:18:00):

The atheist Jew makes an appeal to the "shared" morality of a bunch of other atheists, Christians, and libertarians in the audience. Are they going to claim that came from empirical science?

He keeps praising Jews as a group for their high IQ and nobel prizes, keeps saying how many of his friends are Jews, then starts putting out hysterical tweets where he says that having pride in one's race is for losers who have never accomplished anything. He keeps saying that we should be individualists and "sort ourselves" and says that ethnonationalism is dumb and that we should not be concerned with issues like demographic replacement.

I understand that he's already vilified by the media here but he's very condescending against anyone remotely touching the idea that we have an immigration/multiculturalism problem and preaches individualism. Seems like he's protecting his recently gained popularity and wealth (doesn't want to lose his patreon shekels, 66k/month is serious money). Also, looks like fame and success got to his head, he has become very arrogant.

I like some of the things he has said and watched some of his lectures but he's getting way too much credit and his fanbase is basically a cult (no better than Christopher Hitchens and Sam Harris fans). A bunch of them even call him as the savior of the West lol

I agree, and Millennial Woes actually made a video about this recently:

Obviously I get why Peterson is reluctant to mix it up with the alt-right. There's really no upside in it for him at this juncture. He's already killing it with his current approach to tackling softer issues and helping young people get their shit together.

If he does debate any serious alt-right personality he'll most likely lose since he still seems to have blinders on when it comes to the JQ, ethnonationalism, etc.

The flipside is that he might actually be more woke than he lets on, but there's no way he wants to get caught sympathizing with the alt-right since that would completely derail his gravy train and put a massive target on his back.

Maybe his position will change in the future once ethnonationalism becomes more mainstream, or maybe he'll continue to cuck on these topics. Either way, I get why he doesn't want to touch this stuff right now.

I do think that his petty tweets consisting of childish arguments are disappointing, and I say that as a fan of his. If he's not going to address these issues in a serious manner then he should stay in his lane and avoid talking about them at all.

No matter how nationalist you are, there is a place for a race-blind, pro-individual philosophy. If the best you can do is call him a "cuck on immigration/nationalism" for having a principled and well-thought-out objection to Nationalism and take cheap shots at his Patreon success, don't expect anyone who doesn't already agree with you to be the least bit persuaded.

James Allsup, Alt-right college student, would destroy Jordan Peterson on a debate about race and nationalism. He would (ironically) corner Jordan Peterson with his own knowledge of racial differences in IQ.

Jordan Peterson has said that the scientific facts about racial differences in IQ depress him. I get that he finds the topic depressing, but this means he's not prepared to do what needs to be done.

But the Alt-right, for all its faults, is ready.

You're right. I was annoyed by his dismissive tweets and I should have written something more constructive rather than be petty and dismiss his views outright.

Nonetheless, yes there is a place for a "race-blind" and pro-individual philosophy. I think it fails because it ignores human nature as man is a social animal and we tend to get together with people who look like us/are similar to us. It also ignores history and any previous attempts to have "diverse" societies. Hence, I think that if he is genuine and that is really his philosophy, then he is a bit naive in that respect.

I respect Peterson's work on psychology and I like how he integrates philosophy and religion in his work but I think he is ignorant about politics and history. That's fine though, you cannot be an expert on every subject. However, he should therefore demonstrate more humility, especially when he dismisses very condescendingly ethno-nationalists and people who are concerned about the rate of immigration. He has become quite arrogant.

Finally, I'm especially annoyed about his Patreon because he has been hypocritical lately (the Faith Goldy incident). He's a guy who has said repeatedly that we should always say the truth, even when it hurts most. It seems to me that this doesn't always apply to him though, especially since he's profiting so much from his Patreon. Him making money is fine but I don't like hypocrites. Yes of course, people often fail to live to the high standards they preach (eg. Seneca and his non-stoic behavior during his career), but that doesn't mean we cannot call them on it.

No, I want him to continue destroying those nutty postmodernists and marxists in universities. Like I said, I think he has had a positive impact overall and he's helpful.

I'm just saying he doesn't need to be so dismissive and say ridiculous things about those topics I mentioned.

So maybe he's not completely red pilled on all your specific gripes. But seriously, cucked on immigration? In this last video he even name drops the presence of women in politics contributing towards political correctness and toleration of Islam and what not. Also, I've heard him say that feminist tolerance of Islam is a consequence of lack of brutal male domination. Cucked? C'mon. He's not an ethnonationalist. But neither am I. Does he NEED to be one to be taken seriously or honestly? Doesn't seem fair to me.

"Christian love bears evil, but it does not tolerate it. It does penance for the sins of others, but it is not broadminded about sin. Real love involves real hatred: whoever has lost the power of moral indignation and the urge to drive the sellers from temples has also lost a living, fervent love of Truth."

Peterson is like Thiel. They're definitely more woke than they let on but need to hold on to their places in society.

I think Peterson is a little disingenuous when he points out that there are more differences within the races than between them. This is Lewontin's Fallacy, and does not contradict the facts that human population groups do have recognizable differences as groups. Peterson certainly knows this.

However disagreeing with Peterson's tempering his message on this point doesn't mean he has nothing worthwhile to say. No one is ever going to agree with all of the opinions I hold, the attitude that there must be 100% agreement or someone is a sell-out or cuck is incredibly counterproductive and naive.

Have any of you watched his biblical lectures? I'm on Part IV. Some of the subject matter is hair-raising.

He is well-read and articulate in ways that you don't encounter very often, if ever. His ability to reference texts, ideas, specific passages and quotes is flattening. Mixing 'Sleeping Beauty' in with 'Adam & Eve' and somehow making the point even more profound.

And to think a mere 10-15 years ago this type of content would have only been available to the tiniest minority of university students.

What a time to be alive.

I'm beginning to believe in synchronicity. Now I know why I loved Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy/stories of adventure as a young buck.

I watched this... It was pretty good. The story in the lecture kind of belabored the point, but that's what children's books do, so... He has a very interesting lecturing style.

Colleagues write letter of support for Wilfrid Laurier profs embroiled in free speech controversy
The letter, sent via an email distribution list on Monday, was followed by a statement from the university announcing the outcome of an independent fact-finder’s investigation.

Quote:Twenty faculty members at Wilfrid Laurier University signed an open letter in support of two colleagues who criticized teaching assistant Lindsay Shepherd for showing a video clip that featured a controversial figure in her tutorial.

The letter, published Monday on an academic listserv for the Canadian Communication Association, underscored the supervising professor’s academic freedom to decide what material is presented to supplement lectures.

“While the ‘free speech’ of a single individual has dominated discussion surrounding this situation, ‘academic freedom’ is also a decisive term in this context,” the letter said.

“We reject efforts of those who have seized this episode as a strategic opportunity to disparage disciplines and scholars with commitments to improving social and economic equality within universities and in society at large.”

Communications studies department professor Nathan Rambukkana, Shepherd’s supervisor; Herbert Pimlott, co-ordinator for the masters program that Shepherd is enrolled in; and Adria Joel, acting manager for Gendered Violence Prevention and Support, were secretly recorded by the 23-year-old during a subsequent meeting.

Shepherd was criticized by the three staff members for failing to condemn the views of University of Toronto professor Jordan Peterson, who has refused to use gender-neutral pronouns. She aired a short clip of a TVO debate featuring the professor as part of a communications tutorial to “contextualize” the complexities of grammar, she said in the clip.

“The thing is, can you shield people from those ideas? Am I supposed to comfort them and make sure they are insulated away from this? . . . To me that is so against what a university is about,” Shepherd can be heard saying in the recording, adding she disagreed with Peterson.

In the open letter, faculty and staff from the communications studies department responded to the claim, which has been hotly debated on social media.

“Charges that our program shelters students from real-world issues or fosters classrooms inhospitable to discussing contentious issues from different vantage points seem to us simply preposterous,” the letter said.

“Likewise, commentators who characterize our students as millennial ‘snowflakes’ not only insult our students but also paint a dramatically inaccurate representation of what happens in our classrooms.”

The university apologized to Shepherd last month after she discreetly recorded the meeting with the staff members and released it publicly.

The two professors who attended the meeting did not respond to requests for comment from the Star.

Also on Monday, Laurier president Deborah MacLatchy confirmed in a statement that no formal complaint or informal concern was ever filed in relation to Shepherd’s class.

However, a university spokesperson said it was a later discussion among students about the video that led to the meeting with Shepherd.

MacLatchy’s statement, issued following the faculty’s open letter, detailed the outcome of an independent factfinder’s investigation into the incident and outlined ways in which the university plans to improve handling future cases.

“We are here to put an end to the ongoing politicization of this issue,” MacLatchy said.

In addition to the review of relevant university policies, including that for “Gendered and Sexual Violence,” Laurier also plans to standardize training and support for teaching assistants and supervisors.

The university is also introducing a 13-member Task Force on Freedom of Expression, with names to be announced later this week. The members will work from January until March 2018 to develop a statement on freedom of expression that balances academic freedom, freedom of speech, and Laurier’s mission, vision, and values.

The university declined to comment on the open letter, or detail whether the two faculty members would face discipline.

“It’s really unacceptable to invent a complaint, and bring me into a meeting and accuse me of something they had no understanding of, and to abuse their power in that way,” Shepherd said. “It’s weird to not address the fact that you made up a fraudulent complaint. I think they need to address it.”

On Tuesday, Shepherd said on Twitter that she will be a teaching assistant next semester for one of the faculty signees of the open letter.

I'm thinking that the only reason she is getting this level of support is because she is a woman. If it were a man, no one would give a fuck about academic freedom.

^ Well I think it's more because she recorded it in clear audio and published them saying some clearly unacademic things, while she said precisely nothing wrong during that recording, and even had a legitimate reason for playing the Peterson pronoun video - The lecture was about the use of the ambiguous "they" pronoun in the study of grammar...

Glad to see from that letter the pencil neck professors won't budge an inch and are just as delusional as ever. Their eventual downfall will be all the more surprising to them.

Minor misunderstanding: "academic freedom" in this case doesn't refer to her freedom, rather it refers to the lecturer's freedom to indoctrinate his students and demand that she takes part in the indoctrination rather than abuse her "freedom of speech." In other words, they are using "academic freedom" to get around that whole freedom of speech thing. Of course only academics would be stupid enough to actually buy this argument, but this is a university...

Found some of his videos pretty interesting. I decided to research some topics myself. Sadly I discovered a lot of the exact same information in some books. I dont know if its standard procedure for professors but he makes it seem like he is formulating these ideas on the spot, kinda lost some respect for him.

I'd get that idea out of your head, Jordan Peterson or otherwise. It's almost unheard of for a professor at his level to not exhaustively plan out what he's going to say in lectures. Nor would any serious prof claim their lectures are original - lectures by their natures are syntheses of sources (that are probably listed in the course syllabus).

Sounds like he may be going off-script a bit here and there, but no academic would think he was claiming undue credit.

I dont know if its standard procedure for professors but he makes it seem like he is formulating these ideas on the spot, kinda lost some respect for him.

You lost respect for him because he (a) he is educated and knowledgeable about his area of expertise in addition to having well thought out ideas and (b) has mastered the skill of lecturing with passion, so he doesn't bore his students by sounding like he is simply repeating the same material for the 15th year in a row?

If only all university professors could be so undeserving of your respect.

RE: Jordan B Peterson: A Real Intellectual
Ill keep my opinion of him until I have sufficient information to change. I come from a scientific background. If the professor was going to work out a proof or derive and equation, he didnt play some elaborate act for the sake of the fluidity and entertainment of the lecture, with slow valve tuning gestures by his head as if he is trying to fine tune his neurons. He just said who came up with it, the important, and maybe more places to research for interested minds. Maybe having the syllabus is different, never took psychology classes so idk.

Not saying he is shit, I will still watch him, but he lost a few points in my book.

For those who would like to learn more, I found a great free source. http://themathesontrust.org/
