They have special rice-making devices, which use incredibly advanced technology to make sure that they will have top-quality rice available whenever they want it. They consume more rice in a day than most Americans do in a month.

None of these people are fat, and none of them show any signs of diabetes.

I am skeptical.

Here's the hypothesis explaining low obesity and diabetes rates in societies with traditional high carb diets. It depends on the idea that fat accumulation is caused by insulin resistance, which is in turn causes by high levels of simple sugars in the diet over time.

1. Sugar in the diet (defined here as sweets, soft drinks, etc.), consumed in large quantities over many years, eventually makes people insulin resistant. Once you're insulin resistant, even carbs from other sources (bread, rice, etc.) lead to fat accumulation. That is, once you've become insulin resistant through years of sugar consumption, even 'safe' carbs now make you fat.

2. In the absence of prolonged consumption of high quantities of sugar, the carbs from other sources (bread, rice, etc.) do not cause insulin resistance. As a result, fat accumulation does not take place.

If true, this explains how some, but not all, cultures can eat bread and rice without obesity.

Not sure man, Asian countries have the lowest diabetes rate per capita where rice is their main staple food. Muslim countries have the highest diabetes prevalence rates.

If they lied to us about women, what makes you think they don't lie to you about anything else?

While I don't completely ignore mainstream health advice, I don't give it much credence like I used to.

Long story short, it makes my GERD or acid reflux go insane. I no longer eat it.

Another thing is that Louisiana people boil rice in water in a pot. Chinese steam it in rice cookers. I have no idea what that really does health wise either.

Also to address the OP's reply:

I know about China's growing diabetes numbers. My wife and I were talking about that last week.

But guess what.

Some younger ones are drinking cokes, juice, coffee, and eating sweets nowadays. Starbucks is everywhere. They also have all this shitty milk tea stuff everywhere and some of it is loaded with sugar. If you go to Chinatowns in the USA, there are 7-10 milk tea places within a block of each other. Depending on where in China it can be just as bad.

Went to a Starbucks in Guangzhou. Went inside. Saw 4 fat girls. Before I walked in, I saw maybe 1 walking around a few hours back, and Guangzhou is known for thick Chinese.

Heavy caffeine use hurts your adrenal glands. That raises cortisol and lowers your metabolism. Chinese (especially older ones) take Ginseng and Lingzhi to heal them in their herbal teas and medicine for hundreds of years (not because they drink caffeine but just for good health). Younger Chinese never bother with certain old Chinese medicine until they get older.

Americans don't heal their glands either. Very few know about DIM, Ganoderma, Zinc, etc. to slow the damage down. Coffee and sugar drinks are at an all time high. Like Rudebwoy said, these drinks are literally a bowl of refined white cane sugar that a person has just ingested. That stuff is pure poison and rots out your teeth.

I see farmer people out in China with what looks like at first bad teeth. If I keep looking at the teeth, they are not rotted out, just discolored. If they have bad breath it is from their stomachs, not their teeth, due to certain foods they eat.

This reminds me of the thread a dentist and Scorpion were talking about how hunter and gatherers did not have cavities because they were not eating sugar. Just meat and vegetables. Now people been eating rice for thousands of years, yet right now, it causes diabetes?

I think you need to take entire diets into account more.

Also, weight and diabetes are very much related. You can technically reverse diabetes by losing weight and eating healthier. You can also avoid it with yearly blood work and lifestyle changes.

OP, I'm not a biologist or a medical dude. If I am wrong show me. I will keep an open mind because like I said, I know martial arts/MMA training, video games, gaming women a little bit, history, and politics. That's it. I never stopped any of my fighters from eating that or pasta, and we always saw benefits of it when we needed it.

Thanks for the responses in advance.

TravelerKai, the rice that people ate for centuries was not refined rice. Refined rice appeared with advent of Industrial revolution. It is what fucks us up. Once you remove the bran and the germ from the grain, all health effects of it are gone.

Sugar is indeed bad stuff, but so are the refined grains.

I feel like I'm repeating the same thing for 5th time in a row...

Ok MOVSM, how can I tell if I am indeed eating refined rice or not? It could be very possible the rice here is not refined at all.

One cool thing about China is that almost all the food (at least where I am) is locally grown. Alot of it is sold in open air markets on the side of the street and roads. It tastes different than anything else in alot of ways. For example the carrots here are soft and not hard like back home.

In China you may have better luck finding unpolished rice. Here in USA, even the specialty markets may not sell it.
Although reading this info it appears that even in small villages refinement may take place.

Apparently, the polished rice may be further coated with glucose to increase luster. Enriched rice is farther processed to infuse it with vitamins/minerals from the bran, but NOT the fiber. It's glycemic index will still be as high as white rice.

Brown-->Unpolished-->Polished (refined) rice. Please report back if it exists.

Interesting. I mostly stack my carbs around work outs. I like to mix it up: brown rice, black rice and potatoes.

I will be checking my PMs weekly, so you can catch me there. I will not be posting.

Nothing to do with the food they eat.

On the contrary, it has everything to do with what they eat.

The countries you bolded are also rich.
They have imported all of the American and American-style fast food. So besides lots of starches, they also eat a lot of fat, and a lot of sugar.
Everything that makes them fat and diabetic.

Digression:
Here's another disease that is new--the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). It is most prevalent in Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, according to Dr. Lustig. I cannot find a graphic he used. It is largely due to sugar consumption. The two muslim countries cannot use alcohol as reward, so they use sugar.
But apparently, NAFLD is also problematic in China, Japan, Brazil, and India, where besides sugar they also eat more rice than the Arabs:

RE: Diabetes: The rice you eat is worse than sugary drinks
I have been eating rice all my life, I am not obese nor do I have diabetes.

My gym buddy use to indulge in a litre of soda everyday, now he is a diabetic. I have other friends who are diabetic, some people are born with it and some develop it late in life.

A monster juicehead at my gym lives on white rice and boiled chicken, the rice is great after a workout. Something about low releasing carbs, similar to oatmeal.

So no amount of studies will convince me that rice is worst than soft drinks.

In Canada, McDonalds had to stop serving those super size drinks due to the negative effects of soda.

In America, some groups forced high schools to remove soda pop machines from their premises.

Fructose will mess you up my friend, I don't need some study to show me that.

Again a study is only someone else's opinion.

I have seen advice in several places that you should wash your rice before cooking because of residue on it that's not good for you. Any truth to that?

"I've been smoking all my life, and I'm not dead yet. That proves tobacco is harmless."

Sarcastic analogies aside, I think your biggest problem is with the title, which is admittedly rather sensationalist. What do you expect? She needs the clickbait.

The studies the article refers to are sound however. And the first study simply said that an average bowl of rice in Singapore (it looks big) will raise your blood sugar more than those two Singapore standard cans of soda.
The second study says that sugar amount and everything else being constant, the difference of rice consumption on diabetes is striking, as illustrated by the second part of the graphic.

I completely agree with you on effect of sugar, and fructose in particular. Above I even described the mechanism by which it does harm.

The reason that you don't have diabetes (yet) is that:
1) You are too young for it--type 2 diabetes used to be known as "adult onset diabetes". That is, if you continue to avoid sugar, but will eat rice (and other starches), you will become diabetic by age 60-70.
2) You mentioned exercise, a great moderating factor. Assuming you are involved in that, I also assume you are interested in diet, and from that I deduce you eat fibrous vegetables. Fiber greatly reduces the glycemic index--brown rice has GI of 50, white rice has GI of 70.
3) If olympic, power lifting, and other anaerobic exercise is in fact the exercise you do, that is the only thing that requires starches, for replenishment of spent glycogen in the muscle tissue.

Let's go back to the average denizen of Singapore, who does none of the above, and drinks Singapore average amount of soda on top of it. What do you think will happen to the metabolic indicators of Asian Indian who eats a metric fuckton of rice more than the European?

I recently cut pasta out of my diet - "whole wheat" pasta or white pasta twice a week was likely a problem, and especially when it was with corn syrup laden spaghetti sauce.

So I'm looking for other cheap carbs, ones high in fiber. Sweet potatoes are an obvious one, but is *all* rice bad? Brown rice, wild rice, all of it?

Brown and wild rice is better.

You've to check glycemic index. I honestly don't know. I tend to avoid all grains, and only eat buckwheat or quinoa on lift days as an exception.

Took a while to find, but steel cut oats are about 42 and this Red River cereal is about 50. Not sure how good that is for grains as I am new to the glycemic index - but it looks better than I expected.

The only sure way to know if white rice is affecting you in a negative way is to eat it for a week and take a blood test, then don't eat it and take another test. Everyone reacts different to certain foods so apart from the obvious bad foods you should experiment with what makes you feel better.

Been eating white rice every day since I was born, and I'm about the leanest person in the gym.

So do my parents, they still eat rice and at 70 years old now they have no health problem whatsoever.

So are most Asian people I grew up with, and even most Asian today, though there are more and more fat kids.

But this thread is telling me I can be diabetic without being fat?

Everything you said I previously addressed above.

Yes, you very much can be diabetic and not fat. These studies focus on non-obese diabetes, but virtually every other diabetes study will address the weight issue.

13 Egypt 16.70 2015

Why is nobody looking at the list and seeing the other GLARING similiarity?

Mauritius, Palau, Kiribati, Seychelles, Tuvalu, New Calendonia... All small island nations with heavy indigenous populations with no cultural history of farming any kinds of grain. They lived off of fish, pigs, and whatever plants they farmed or picked. No grains. As a result their became highly sensitive to such products. All nations have gotten fatter over the last 50 years, but if you see the spike in obesity in Pacific Islander people, there's simply no comparison in the obesity diabetes spike.

This has everything to do with genetic predisposition. When I lived in Hawaii, the indeginous Samoans/Tongans/Tuvalu etc... people there were HUGE. Not only are they extremely addicted to processed carbs in a way that most of us can't relate to, but their bodies also cannot process it the same way a Bavarian man can. Genetics. Of course diet is key for them, but that's the point, they have a lifelong uphill struggle with any carbs to the point where it's a tragedy and they should be forcefully kept away from those foods. I think some pacific island nations have actually enacted such food import bans on their country as a result (citation needed). This is not a lifestyle thing, they live on tropical islands with proud histories of outdoor/ocean activities.

Now getting to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar etc... Not surprised in the least. For the sake of intellectual rigor let's put aside the "muslim" issue, since that's way too broad. These are all Gulf Arab countries that are oil rich. Notice Yemen, Jordan, Iraq, Iran are not on the list? If you have ever been to any of the listed Arab countries, the people lead the most disgustingly unhealthy lives imaginable. Because of the culture, they literally just sit and eat and gorge constantly, with almost no exercise due to clothing norms and the shunning of manual labor. This is almost 100% a lifestyle thing. Iraq and Jordan are not on the list because these countries are poor and the people actually have to work and not sit idle.

*still trying to figure out how Egypt is on the list... I suspect it's because Egyptians get their bread subsidized to the point where it's almost free, and sincerely, the government uses super cheap bread to keep the population subdued the same way the Soviets did it with Alcohol. No cheap/free bread in Egypt = riots.

All small island nations with heavy indigenous populations with no cultural history of farming any kinds of grain. They lived off of fish, pigs, and whatever plants they farmed or picked. No grains.

That's because they had taro, bread fruit, yam, sweet potatoes, cassava, plantains, bananas, various fruits. Polynesians didn't need grains because of it. There were plenty of starches. "Real food" for them always meant inclusion of starches. They were huge before western diets, though notably not obese.

I am afraid that women appreciate cruelty, downright cruelty, more than anything else. They have wonderfully primitive instincts. We have emancipated them, but they remain slaves looking for their masters all the same. They love being dominated.

Dr. Robert Lustig explains why Saudi Arabia and Malaysia have the highest rates of type 2 diabetes: alcohol is prohibited there and it's hot. So what do they drink? Soft drinks (at 22:30)

Well, yes--you go onto a no sugar, no starch diet, do intermittent fasting, and it will reverse your diabetes. Like was described in Cereal Killers the movie, bunch of books, our own leangains, various low-carb high-fat ketogenic diets, etc. He even mentions ACV.
