Have any of you guys ever lost your sense of humour?
I have always been the funniest person I know and I have been told by a few people that I should do stand up (I went to an open mic night once and killed it). It was a central point of who I was.

Over the last few months, however, something has changed. I often take things too seriously, and if I do try to joke it often comes off as unfunny or even weird. This is not all that's up, though. I have also noticed a massive shift in what I find funny. Before, Patrice O'Neal, Bill Burr, and Jim Jefferies were my favourite comedians and could have me cracking up at the drop of a hat. Now when I listen to them (and the other comics I used to listen to) I feel bored and occasionally think "I guess that's true".

Have any of you guys ever dealt with something similar? I have lost a major part of who I was.

Either that or I'm low-key depressed.

RE: Have any of you guys ever lost your sense of humour?
Every now and then (2-3 times a year - couple of days up to a few weeks), I find myself on a "down" period. Wouldn't call it depression. I accepted it as something natural - cannot be cheerful all the bloody time. It goes away same as it came and I'm back to my old self.

As for comedians, I enjoy them but after I heard the same joke (or style) many times, it stops being so funny. Same as banging the same girl over and over again.

When was the last time you had blood work done? A deficit or excessive amounts of thyroid hormone can completely alter your brain functions.

I experienced this with my wife, who would descend into a type of depression due to hyper thyroid (long since fixed.. thank god).

I also experienced a period of depression that turned out to be symptoms of low T. Blood tests revealed by cholesterol was way out of wack and other issues. I fixed this issue with supplements, weight lifting, drinking less, and a lot of weight loss. Depression went away and sense of humor came back (feel great now).

Check to see you have a physical issue first before getting too deep into an introspection of your life. A sudden change in mood to the negative might just be a warning sign that something is physically not right with your body.

I haven't had any blood work done but I may need to get my testosterone levels checked. For the last few months I have also had no sex drive for a while - which, as a 21 year old, should not be the case. I also keep finding elements of game which I had internalised years ago to be alien or seem crass (even though I know they work).

Thanks for the input.

Get a full blood work panel done. You could also have very low vitamin D (VERY common health issue missed by doctors constantly). Vitamin D deficiency causes all sorts of problems, which include low energy / low sex drive. I take 5,400 IU of vitamin D3 per day just to maintain myself in the middle of the 'normal' range on the blood tests.

If you are doing T levels, you will need to do the blood (some do a saliva test also) work first thing in the morning (when your levels should be at the high point).

Might be worth just getting a blood test, but it could just be a normal change in your personality as you mature.

Remember some of the shows, toys or video games from when you were a kid? You probably don't view those childish things the same way today.

You may have been red-pilled so hard you just don't look at the world like you used to. Might be a great time to try new things, switch up your work out, adjust your diet, or try watching different shows or new channels on You Tube. Or just go out and try to meet new people.

I broke up with my LTR of two years back in August on the back of what was the worst period of my life (I got a major back injury right at the beginning of the relationship, followed by major knee and shoulder injuries). Those injuries fucked me up and I spent pretty much all of my final year of uni at home. After I recovered and was newly single (they happened pretty much at the same time) I reassessed my life and realised that I no longer had any hobbies (thanks to injury) and I had little in common with the few friends I had. I hated it.

I also reflected on my relationship and initially incorrectly felt that it was my fault that the relationship ended due to not showing I cared enough. Although I could have done so more, it was actually because I had been crippled for a long time and she had her sisters in her ear telling her to dump me.

In September I began my Masters degree. I have more hobbies but they are pretty much solo things (play chess and piano, and I'm joining a singing group) but I still have few close friends (I may be an undiagnosed aspie, but I'm working on it). I sometimes have negative thoughts about my degree, but I'm just being a little bitch.

Ironically, I managed to maintain my sense of humour, sex drive, and confidence (I often feel a lack of confidence at the moment) throughout my injury, and it is only after that I've begun to feel all this.

For me it's pretty much stop going to the gym, T drops, all parts of life seem worse whether or not they are objectively so. Start going to the gym again, life is great, problems manageable, even the air tastes better.

I don't think I've ever really had a great sense of humor. I have to force myself to laugh along in social situations constantly, and pretty often my jokes are considered very dark and get the wrong reaction out of people.

You might just be having a down period though. it will probably pass but if it doesn't there's likely something beneath the surface that's causing you to be off. I find I have off weeks and on weeks myself, though my down times tend to coincide with vacations. Guess I'm just not into having a ton of idle time, even if I do spend it productively.

You have your answer(s). Some major events have taken place in your life, and people change as a result of their experiences, and even simply getting older. From a personal perspective, the comedians that I used to laugh at when I was your age do nothing for me now.

It can happen in winter with SAFD. Often times you just need to recharge. Reassessment of your life is a good start to doing that.

Can you expand on what you mean by needing to recharge? Do you have any experience of what I'm going through or anything similar?

I might have SAD as I have had a couple of major bouts of depression in winter before.

I'm gonna go get my bloods done asap.

The vitamin D advice is good, get a moderate amount of sleep every night (studies say sleep deprivation actually tends to help with depression, but you don't want to go that far).

Aside from that sounds like you're feeling stagnant and need to make progress in at least one area of your life. Preferably in something where you compete with others (ie need to achieve compliance from someone else - somewhat similar to external validation). Think chess (you win more against others, you get ranked better) as opposed to something stamp collecting or reading books.

I've had some serious, serious depression over the years. On meds, that kind of stuff. It can be brutal and last for months. It sucks. Sad!

One good thing to do is go for walks or hikes whenever its sunny in the winter and make sure to soak it in as much as you can. Lifting weights is good too. Any kind of exercise can help. Big league. Watching videos of funny Trump moments is great and if you have a dog buddy you can take him for a walk, throw the ball around, dog cuddles. Dogs can be pretty funny.

Work sometimes gets a little rotten. Home life can get stressful. Sometimes your health can get in the way. To me, recharge is doing something productive and fun. To me, recharge also involves meditation and/or just thinking and taking inventory. You will get lots of good advice on both here in this forum. Some people here have an office at home just for that purpose.

I have never been a fan of sitting still in one place so I like to take long drives. 18 hours, 20 hours, etc. Once it was 3 full days of driving. Even though i was tired as shit I was fully recharged. Drove over 1200 miles. Nothing out there except driving and thinking (really, taking inventory of your life)

I also ride a motorcycle. That is the best short term mood enhancer ever invented. There is nothing better than putting on the helmet, picking a direction and go until it is time to go home.

I dont have a chemical issue (I believe). If you do you should get it checked out and get it fixed. If not and its just "life sucks" everyone here has a way to improve the mood. YMMV on this.

I've never been on meds as I've heard a lot of bad shit about them and would just prefer to try and improve as a person or logic my way out of depression.

You may have a point about the lack of exposure to the sun - I'm a masters student in a place where the sun sets at about 3pm everyday, so you can imagine that I don't get out much. That being said, I've never had my sense of humour at least be inhibited by this before.

It also doesn't help that I'm surrounded by feminists and often have to watch what I say.

Yes. When looking at the Migrant Invasion thread, british politics, reading up on foreign aid or just some phat assed slut who thinks 8 inches is small but I digress.

It comes flooding back once I see CNN.

I don't think my sense of humor is any different, but it seems like my jokes all fall flat now. Like everyone I make smalltalk with over the course of the day is tense or uncomfortable.

See you're using lol. You're getting your funny back.

Next time, after telling us you got your blood test tell us there was a Japanese guy in line behind you. Tell us the doctor told him he had a cataract. Then tell us the Japanese guy said "No, I drive a Rincoln."

So you are ok , health wise.

The reason you aren't funny anymore is because you aren't hanging around any funny people. Graduate students at a school where the sun goes down at 3pm are not funny. I just know it.

What Dr. Kona suggests you do is hit an Irish Pub at Happy Hour. Get rip shit wasted with some old men. Look for ones laughing and sit next to them. Become a regular, and make it a point to get out there and be funny at least an hour a day.

Now, when you are at the pub, tell the old men how you went to the doctor because you weren't funny anymore. Tell them after he took your blood, you found out you had high testosterone. You told the doctor you wanted a second opinion and he said "well you're ugly too!"

Now let's hear three jokes from you.

Aloha!
