In order to avoid self-indulgence, you must be social. If no one is around to try things you make, a modern day hostess cannot exist. Women of the past often made things they would eat very little of (or not at all), either because of taste preferences or the impending caloric consequences. Second, I'm starting to wonder if young women cook at all. Some years back, my mother transferred all of her index cards- maybe 150+, to a small hardcover book, sectioned out for the different holidays and occasions. She wanted the family recipes to carry on when she's no longer around. They are all hand written, and small diagrams accompany the more intricate details. You should see the girls' faces when I bring it out to make something. You'd think I just showed them the holy grail- they always look through it with a big smile of excitement as I am working the grill, stove, and oven. I don't think young girls today are getting any guidance other than Pinterest. Perhaps they have not initiated the learning process, but my guess is that their mothers are not wanting to share the knowledge- either they want a reason for their "babies" to come home since they can't do it for themselves without the "secrets", or they can't be bothered to have learned much themselves beyond the basics and have no skills to pass along.

Northwestern is actually an excellent school overall. It is a shame they wasted a seat in the classroom for this typist.

I was thinking of doing the Petit Fours for a laugh, but the recipe says you need one cup of sugar for the cake component - all they are is a cut up and decorated sponge cake - then one kilo of sugar to glaze them, and then three cups of sugar for the icing. Most of this is icing sugar, which is as refined as it gets, and therefore, the unhealthiest sugar you can have.

The only thing I can say about anyone who'd actually cook a fucking packet mug cake in a microwave oven is that they have certainly purchased accurately: they are buying a cake that was made for a mug.

It's amazing that the feminist Puritan hordes never brought their guns to bear on the food industry at large. Salt Sugar Fat lays out very simply how Home Economics courses in the US -- the source of a lot of solid education about how a woman should shop and what food she should put on the table for herself or her family -- were first infiltrated by food industry operatives and then, eventually, removed by them. This was deskilling of women, making them less independent, etc, etc. For some odd reason this has never been touted as an element of Teh Patriarchy.
