According to the article linked below: Basically, if you sign in with your Google account on iOS, you give the app makers the ability to:
  • Read all your email
  • Send email as you
  • Access all your Google drive documents (including deleting them)
  • Look at your search history and your Maps navigation history
  • Access any private photos you may store in Google Photos
  • And a whole lot more

I would uninstall and revoke app permissions IMMEDIATELY. The ability to read your email means that they could potentially download and store everything.

You can revoke the permissions here: https://security.google.com/settings/sec...ermissions

Quote:I figured I’d post this because I don’t see anyone else talking about it and it bothers me. If you didn’t know, Pokemon Go is the latest in the long running series of games from Nintendo (although Go is actually made by a developer called Niantic). It’s also the first (I think) to run on your phone. Needless to say, it’s a huge hit. And it looks like a ton of fun - pretty much everyone I know is playing it.

But there’s a problem.

To play the game you need an account. Weirdly, Niantic won’t let you just create one - you need to sign in with an existing account from one of two services - the pokemon.com website or Google. Now the Pokemon site is for some reason not accepting new signups right now so if you’re not already registered there you’ll need to use a Google account - and that’s where the fun begins.

I started the game, hit the Google button, and was redirected to log in. Normally you’d see a little message saying what data the app is going to be able to access - something like “This app will be able to view your email address and name”. For some reason that’s not shown in this case, but I went ahead and logged in anyway. Then on a whim I went to see which permissions it was granted (you can see for your own account right here). To say I was a little stunned is putting it lightly - it said:

Pokemon Go has full access to your Google account

Here are a couple of excerpts from the Google help page about what this means:

When you grant full account access, the application can see and modify nearly all information in your Google Account

This “Full account access” privilege should only be granted to applications you fully trust, and which are installed on your personal computer, phone, or tablet.

Let me be clear - Pokemon Go and Niantic can now:
  • Read all your email
  • Send email as you
  • Access all your Google drive documents (including deleting them)
  • Look at your search history and your Maps navigation history
  • Access any private photos you may store in Google Photos
  • And a whole lot more

What’s more, given the use of email as an authentication mechanism (think “Forgot password” links) they now have a pretty good chance of gaining access to your accounts on other sites too.

And they have no need to do this - when a developer sets up the “Sign in with Google” functionality they specify what level of access they want - best practices (and simple logic) dictate you ask for the minimum you actually need, which is usually just simple contact information.

Now, I obviously don’t think Niantic are planning some global personal information heist. This is probably just the result of epic carelessness. But I don’t know anything about Niantic’s security policies. I don’t know how well they will guard this awesome new power they’ve granted themselves, and frankly I don’t trust them at all. I’ve revoked their access to my account, and deleted the app. I really wish I could play, it looks like great fun, but there’s no way it’s worth the risk.

The average IQ of people who are playing Pokemon Go is very low.

That's why they allow to use mass surveillance on themselves,
they turn on their GPS satellite location tracking and
they give up all privacy on themselves.

I for sure wouldn't want to bang any rare good looking girl
that I may potentially meet playing this.

Let's be serious, daygame is infinitely better than Pokemon shit

You should walk around campus and see who is actually playing the game. I was at my alma mater (which is a top 5 school) yesterday and I saw 30-40 kids in the engineering building playing this game.

It sounds like a good idea, I'm sure a few guys are going to get laid from it, but I wouldn't invest a lot of time in this avenue.

Video games, and particularly "gimmick" games like this generally have a pretty short shelf life. Best guess is that within a couple weeks 80% of the people playing now will drop out and be on to the next big thing, and the only people left playing will be the hardcore weebs, i.e. chicks you wouldn't want to bang.

RE: The Pokemon GO thread
Some interesting thoughts by Raph Koster, a long-time MMO developer: AR is an MMO.

Choice quote:

Quote:Not long ago, I spoke with a very high-powered Silicon Valley exec. I asked this person about the ethical implications of social VR and AR. Their response was “what ethical implications?”

Here's the entire article:

Quote:I’ve said this before, but in the wake of the viral success of Pokémon GO, it needs to be said again. Augmented reality is just a virtual world, an MMO, a MUD even, with all of the same design issues, plus a few new ones.

The goggles fallacy

To some, particularly vets of online worlds of various stripes, this may seem obvious. But most days, it feels like the average person working in social VR, AR, and the like, is ignorant of this. It’s evident in the very large pile of past lessons they are failing to heed in their designs.

But then there are also those who see these experiences as somehow qualitatively different. The commonest argument given is what I call “the goggles fallacy.” Goggles or phones, as Pokémon GO is demonstrating, are just clients. A VR headset is also just a client. And as I’ve argued exhaustively before, clients are not the part that determines whether something is a virtual world. I’ll use MMO as the base term here, as it’s shorter to type and what people are currently most familiar with.
  • World of Warcraft has a server that simulates space. It uses a map that is based on something made up.
  • Pokémon GO has a server that simulates space. It uses a map that is based on the real world.
  • WoW has a server that tracks individual connected clients and positions them spatially on that map.
  • So does Pokémon GO.
  • WoW has little AI spawns you can interact with.
  • So does Pokémon GO.

In fact, if you compare the two servers, aside from the data set, they likely do the same thing across the board.

Proponents of the idea that the client matters more usually bring up questions around immersiveness, around visceral gut reactions, around ineffable sense of presence — perhaps forgetting that as originally coined, the notion of “telepresence” was achieved with pretty crude hardware. MMOs, mirror worlds, augmented reality, lifelogging, and son are all intimately related and use the same core tech. I know the makers of Pokémon GO know this, because their CEO was involved in Meridian 59, one of the earliest MMOs, as well as in Keyhole, one of the first major mirror worlds, which became Google Earth.

You are the client

With smartphones, we tend to think of “the client” as meaning the little screen we stare through to catch a Pokémon. But that’s not accurate. Take a look at the list of permissions that the game asks for. That’s not a self-contained app. That’s your whole life. You are fully an avatar. Pokémon has your email, and can send emails for you. Pokémon knows everywhere you walk. Pokémon can connect to your car. Pokémon knows who your friends are.

You are the client. You are the avatar. Your real life is what is being used for your friends list, location, chat system… all those things that you used to think of as packaged up behind an avatar, a false front. Sure, the fact is that smartphones have been gradually eating all your privacy and you’ve cheerfully given it up in order to get better directions and nifty alerts about traffic and so on. So this has been happening for a while. And yet.

The old adage is “never trust the client.” So a big first question is “can you be trusted, since you are the client?”

The answer is probably no. For example, there are no doubt thousands of people downloading the backdoored Pokémon GO app that takes complete remote control of your phone.

But that’s only the start of not trusting…

A user-generated world

The Pokémon GO database is basically a replicated version of the Ingress database, the previous game by Niantic. And said database was heavily crowdsourced. This has already led some enterprising players to wonder aloud whether they can use Ingress play to affect the locations of Pokéstops or gyms in Pokémon GO. It’s also led to complaints that rural areas are Pokémon deserts, because Ingress players never built up the database entries in those locations.

However, it’s also led to some artifacts that are very familiar. Here’s a guy who lives in a building that Ingress players (presumably) labeled as a Pokémon GO gym. What are the implications here? Aside from the very real risk of constant home invasions, we’re seeing a game AR layer used to directly affect home value and livability, outside of the owner’s control. Some are seeing this as a benefit, as in the examples of real estate listings using Pokémon GO data as a value-add. Others, who have reported a dozen people in their backyard at 2am, are less happy.

What is the fruition of this? Long ago, in Star Wars Galaxies, we allowed players to freely build homes and even cities, anywhere on the map that wasn’t explicitly disallowed. Cities allowed players to set rules about who could attack other players within their borders. A few sneaky players set up their cities surrounding or even directly on top of designer-created content, and then started extorting players who wanted to visit that content — or just killing them, in the game. (You can’t kill another player in Pokémon GO, but… you are the client. We’ll get back to that in a second).

Affecting the real world economy

So here we are affecting the livability of real estate. But Pokémon GO might also need to take heed of the lessons from managing game economies in MMOs as well. We learned through some very painful lessons exactly how powerful our control of the economy was pretty early on in MMOs, after some big mistakes. Like, that one time we accidentally created an entire secondary market and exchange rate between real world money and digital assets, oops. Surely that can’t happen with Pokémon , can it?

Well, actually… we’re already seeing coffee shops advertising discounts for those who happen to be on specific Pokémon GO teams, and today there was a Forbes article giving business advice about how to leverage the game layer for more customers. Make no mistake, these are the first steps towards real-money trade, and are another way in which the game is affecting the economy. There has already been discussion of how there will be Pokémon trading; expect this to spill over into real world effects immediately. After all, Randy Farmer laid it out very clearly back in 2004:

Quote:So, the steps on the virtual economy slippery slope are:
  • Gifting → Twinking
  • Gifting + Multiple Chars/Server → Muling
  • Gifting + Messaging + Trust → Trading
  • Trading – Messaging – Trust + In World Machinery → Robust Trading
  • Robust Trading + Scarcity + Liquidity → External Market (eBay)
  • External Market – Trust + In World Machinery → GOM

Beyond that, there’s a very real question of fairness. If one coffee shop or bar is a Pokéstop and another one isn’t, Niantic or Nintendo are literally putting their thumb on the scale of which business does better on a given street. If the game continues to thrive, expect this to become a sore spot for people who suddenly found their real life business slurped into a game map.

Player versus player

Player vs player activity is a common element of the elder game in MMOs. Pokémon GO has gone ahead with this, and following on the model from Ingress and earlier AR games, has allowed for PvP activity in capturing gyms to one team or another.

But… you’re the client. It’s trivial to envisage a gym made physically inaccessible by other players — locked doors? Physical intimidation?

Already, given the recent shootings of black men and the sniper attack at the Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas, some have raised concerns about “Pokémon While Black” as a possible risk to life and limb. There are also, thank heavens, stories about the exact opposite as in the widely circulated image telling the story of a mixed race group in a park in the middle of the night, possibly suspected of making a drug deal, but instead persuading the police officer who showed up to instead join them in playing the game.

But is the fear overblown? Well, no. You’re the client, and there’s no PK switch in real life. In Ultima Online circa 1998, when we were available in Hong Kong, we suffered through the problem of actual real life triad gangs forming guilds and engaging in PK wars. Then they took those fights to the real life streets. Far as I know, Pokémon GO doesn’t have a “call the admins, uh, I mean police” panic button. Make no mistake: by creating teams at all, this game has put in place at least a little context encouraging players to aggress one another. The developers only hope that it only happens via game-sanctioned means.

The stuff that has not happened…. yet

Don’t get me wrong. The social element here is powerful. Pokémon GO has the best emote system available: the human body. It has the most elegant and all consuming chat system ever: smartphones for tells and local voice with full presence for local chat. It has the most detailed and highly simulated game map ever, thanks to the real world. We are seeing amazing social activity happening, amazing bursts of joy, across the world.

But we should absolutely expect everything that happened in MMOs to happen here, because AR is an MMO. Every bug, every emergent feature you thought was cool in WoW or EVE Online, to happen here, but in your local park and (goodness!) at your local church.

I’m happy to see that Niantic has decided, a few days after launch, that maybe it might be important to hire a community manager.

But really, it’s a little late to this idea that maybe they are running a community. It should have been obvious. After all, they have avatars. Who talk. Who will trade. Who move about a world. Who acquire stuff. Who interact. They affect the map. They affect the real world economy. Soon you’ll see each other’s profiles, sue the game to track them across the world, and probably much more, if not in this game, then in others.

This is a government

We have a name for entities in the real world which have access to your private data, which have controls on the economy, which can unlaterally affect real estate values, and which can set forth rules via commission or omission on how people interact. In the virtual worlds, we said that those who had power over the world were gods, immortals, wizards.

Facebook, Google, and yes now Nintendo, The Pokémon Company, and Niantic, as they move into AR, are basically like governments. And if they are going to start impinging upon the public sphere, it’s getting to be time that they take it seriously and actually walk through the consequences and ripple effects of what they are doing.

In O’Fallon, Missouri, we see the game tool of “Pokémon lures” used to entrap armed robbery victims. This is a direct consequence of the game mechanics, a behavior that this game enables that was not possible before.

Already we see people photoshopping Pokémon onto armed police in SWAT gear in Baton Rouge. What happens when the tools you enable for this innocent game are used in radically different social contexts?

So here we go again, because every year this little bit of writing gets to be more and more pointed:

Quote:Someday there won’t be any admins. Someday it’s gonna be your bank records and your grocery shopping and your credit report and yes, your virtual homepage with data that exists nowhere else. Someday it’s gonna be Snow Crash and Neuromancer and Otherland all wrapped up into one, and it may be a little harder to write to Customer Service. Your avatar profile might be your credit record and your resume and your academic transcript, as well as your XP earned.

On the day that happens, I bet we’ll all wish we had a few more rights in the face of a very large, distributed server, anarchic, virtual world where it might be very very hard to move to a different service provider.

Not long ago, I spoke with a very high-powered Silicon Valley exec. I asked this person about the ethical implications of social VR and AR. Their response was “what ethical implications?”

Frankly, that scared the shit out of me. You design this society. Intentionally or unintentionally, you are shaping how people will behave.

Further Reading

There’s a bunch of science fiction you should read.

If you are doing anything at all with social VR or AR, please please please read up on the history of virtual worlds. Realize that in your cluelessness you may well recreate some famously ugly moments, only this time with even greater psychological and physical consequence. If you do, it’s entirely on you.

Alternatively, consider hiring any of the many folks experienced in this arena, and actually listening to them.

Pokemon GO is Becoming a Dating App

http://comicbook.com/2016/07/08/pokemon-...ating-app/

Some fans of Pokemon GO are discovering that playing the game is providing an extra boost to their dating lives. Three of the top posts on the Reddit's Pokemon subreddit on Friday were about how Pokemon GO helped players with dates.

RE: Pokemon Go
I was out with a few members last night. This shit is a phenomenon. So many young people playing this. We were sitting on the outside patio of chipotle eating and some fat 4/10 walks up to ask and outright asks "you guys play pokemon go!?" We acted clueless and she chatted us up for like 10 minutes telling us all about pokemon and this game. We just teased her about how silly it was.

RE: The Pokemon GO thread
I decided to give this app a go with two of my friends (we'll call them Guy #1 and Guy #2) over the weekend, and there was both a good and bad outcome.

The bad thing was that we ran into some shady neckbeard dude with snake bite piercings under his bottom lips, a septum (the bull nose ring), and a #VAPENATION tank top, and as he looked up and said "Hey dudes, what did you catch today?" he took a long drag from his vape pen or whatever they're called... very awkward. Guy #2 finally told him we had to go "hunt more Pokemon", so we got out of there as quickly as we could, considering we were in a thick patch of forest, far from human civilization with this suspicious dude who looked like he had smoked a little something besides vape before he left the house. Not a good situation to be in.

Then we met this very attractive blonde that reminded me of Cameron Diaz in There's Something About Mary (1998) who was walking her dog; Guy #1 was a Pokemon fanatic, and he had Pokemon-themed jackets and pants and snapbacks that really made him look like he had just arrived from Comic-Con. Guy #1 has been a natural at gaming chicks since I knew him when he was 4 and I was 6 (now we're 15 and 17), and of course he pounced on the pussy the instant he made eye contact with the Cameron Diaz chick, but he ended up sounding, well, like too much of a Pokemon enthusiast. The dude went on about how he had went all around town and to a neighboring town to find gyms (Pokemon ones of course, not real ones) and she was like "uh, i have no idea what you're talking about, I'm like, so new to this stuff". I was also new to the game, so I cut Guy #1 off and empathized with how new she was to the game, even though she didn't seem to grasp basic elements of the game that most toddlers probably could (the dumb blonde stereotype is real?), and eventually she somehow recognized me from school, saying that she swore she saw me all the time in school, although I didn't recollect ever seeing her once in the past four years. I went with it and said we should make up for lost time then, she gives me her number under the impression that I would "help her out" with Pokemon Go, and then we left.

Oh, and we found the blonde in the same forest that we found the #VAPENATION dude in, hopefully she didn't run into him too...

Anyway, that's my experience with Pokemon Go. Good stuff for my generation, but overall, the app's main purpose is to, as my friend put it, "serve as a distraction to the futility of my existence and the inevitable decline of Western civilization".

Okay I put in a few hours going to pokespots with lures and while women do play this game, they're all fat feminists and smelly pegasisters.

Location dependent I guess. I'm over trying to use this to meet women.

I would normally agree that most things like this should be expected to be 'short lived' but I fear this may have some elements, that are not typical in other fads, that could turn it into something that lasts a while.

1: I am seeing reports that its usage is exceeding other online apps or web sites, like Facebook, twitter, etc. I am also seeing some reports that people are spending more time on Pokemon Go than other sites.

2: From what I have seen, I think this might have an 'addictive element' to it, something like the collectible card games, such as Magic had, and will keep people using it for a long time to come. I think this may even be a 'level worse' than Magic the Card Game in its addictive ability for the customers.

Over the years I have looked at a number of industries and products, and one of the most successful was Magic, The Card Game. I bought a starter set once and didn't seem to think it was that 'big of deal' but did come across multiple reports of people spending all kinds of time and money on it; to the point of ruining school, work and relationships.

I even came across one report online from the original developers for the Magic card game losing track of time while playing the game on weekend night. According to that report, they started mid evening on Saturday night during the summer, in an air conditioned room at the student center (the players were in college at the time) that had no clock or time piece. When they finally decided to stop for the night, they thought that it was only 3am or 4am in the morning. Instead they were shocked to find themselves walking out into the bright sunlight of around 7am.

From what other people posted online about spending all kinds of time playing Magic the Card Game or spending endless hours trying to construct the perfect deck that could not be defeated, I identified a few elements to Magic that had players so addicted and spend so much time on it.

1: The packs were a mix of cards, but every pack had a certain percentage of common, uncommon, plus a chance of rare or very rare cards in every pack. I am not sure of the exact classifications, but the designer or publisher for Magic even got a patent on the formula and process as to how the cards needed to be sorted and packed so the decks would have the correct percentages of each so players would keep buying them. The correct percentages are the amounts in a random pack that would get players to buy as many as possible. If there were too many rare or very rare cards then players would not buy that many packs. If there too few packs with rare or very rare cards, then it would look like to players that they couldn't get the cards and they would stop buying the packs.

Other companies tried to duplicate this process, but most failed and would end up licensing the process from them.

2: Endless combinations that the players could not see or realize. Every card in the game had a counter to it or one better, so it was impossible to construct a perfect deck that could always win since there would always be another card that could defeat any card.

3: Appearance of finite combinations. It appeared to people, that there was a finite number of combinations so that it looked there was a solution to the problem of constructing a perfect deck.

Items two and three combined in having players spend an infinite amount of time on what looked like to be a problem with a finite number of combinations. That is why I believe some people would spend hours, or even days, trying to construct perfect decks. While it looked intuitively like there was a solution to the problem, the fact was that there was no solution and any deck they construct could always be defeated by another combination of cards.

^ I remember collecting the Pokemon cards when I was in 7th grade. Lots of kids were into it at the time. However, I don't ever recall anyone actually playing the card game, ever.

If you already have a social circle with lots of broads, what role would Pokemon Go play in meeting said broads?

The social and economic implications of this 'real life mmo' are fascinating. Essentially this is the first time the virtual world has melded with the real world with mixed results. It's especially interesting that Nintendo and Niantic have become a sort of new government for those who play GO.

I think this is the beginning of something I don't want to be a part of.

Most people in their 20's to late 30's played this as children in the states.

There is an addicting aspect of this.

I remember spending very late nights on my gameboy playing Pokemon.

I wouldn't play the new one.

I'd rather train at a real gym than at some Poke Gym.

You guys aren't living 'til you played the Chinese knockoff City Spirit Go. And they kinda look like Pokemon if you imagine really hard. Although I might imagine Chinese kids dodging dangerous amounts of traffic, walking into potholes, and all sorts of obstacles and hazards.

RE: The Pokemon GO thread
Crap boys, they are everywhere.

I only started reading this thread yesterday, so didn't know what was going on.

Now, I look around and there are people standing in the middle of parking lots, running up and down stairs outside buildings, hovering next to the river.

I am quizzing passersby.

Pokemon? Yeah.

Pokemon? Yeah.

I even yell at people without phones: Why aren't you Pokemoning?

They act embarrassed.

I even had a blue haired freak with a nice body come over and sit right next to me, furiously punching at her phone, never looking up. I got her to show me the ropes and she wove into the narrative how she was abused as a child, abused in the army, and that I was wrong thinking that mostly Asians were playing.

It has already been tied in to the SJW narrative.

I asked her if she was into Pokemon when she was a kid, and she said yes, it was nostalgia. I asked if she wasn't a little young for nostalgia, and if maybe she shouldn't wait until she was in her seventies with no teeth sitting on a porch for the nostalgia.

She left.

I think the nostalgia is the hook though, and explains why people are going crazy with this. Forget about cops getting killed, and student loan debt, and no jobs. Play this game all summer! It is like slipping a nice big comforting thumb in your mouth.
