I actually took the time to verify this online. There are several pro-black websites making the claim that he was indeed black based on an image on a single debunked coin.

Comics are a dying medium. Their sales are in that dead zone where basically any controversy at all boosts them a little. So that's what the printed comics industry has become: create controversy, receive minor uptick in issue sales.

I don't really get offended by it at this point, because that's just how meaningless this is. It's a bunch of vultures picking over the corpse of childhood memories. Enjoy those characters for the joy they gave you at that point in your life. These caricatures they create aren't those characters, literally.

They tend to stay sort of pubescent in tone, no matter how much "grit" is thrown in.

But this is just insolence. They are shitting on their nerdy, white, male demographic, for no particular reason.
The virtue signaling crowd will say, "Great!" and then spend their money on things they are actually interested in.
Unless they are fishing for government subsidies, this is irrational behaviour.

I guess I'm in the minority here but to me a characters girlfriend is the right way to introduce diversity rather than changing the sex and race of the character itself.

I seriously can't imagine the target demographic, young teenage boys and girls, having that much of a reaction to Spidermans girlfriend. Bad writing is what will kill the comic, not this.

I wonder if people would be as upset if she were asian?

Marvel boss says move towards more diverse characters is 'killing sales'
