Virtually nothing you'd carry on your person short of bullet specific armour will stop a centre-fire bullet (except 80-100 kilos of person perhaps).

Stab vests are ineffective against bullets and ballistic vests are ineffective against being stabbed. The two use similar materials but in different weaves for very specific threats.

While it may sound stupid, if you're running away from someone with a gun then try to add a bit of zigging and zagging. Targets like that are infuriatingly difficult to hit.

But honestly, when it comes to being shot at unless you've got legitimate ballistic fibre or plates in your backpack then you're probably better off just dropping it to get full range of movement while reducing your overall weight.

If in doubt visit this educational web site. It's a must for anyone who doesn't have a solid grasp on what counts as cover vs concealment when dealing with this gun (chambering) or that gun.

https://www.theboxotruth.com/

An empty beer keg for example will take the punch out of most pistol rounds but if you're relying on it to stop an AK then you'll be shit-out-of-luck.

Most commercial body armor will prevent you from being stabbed to death depending on the thickness of the blade. In a knife class I took years ago we stabbed body armor over ballistic clay with various types of commercially available blades. The blades that did the worst were thicker heavy bladed knives (think KaBar, or Bowie). They didn't even penetrate. The knives that did penetrate the armor did so to a depth of about an inch. Which is more than enough to puncture the heart. These were knives with the Wharncliffe blade tip. This is nowhere being conclusive, but it can be helpful.

Body armor in terms of preventing stabbing gives you much more time in stopping the stabbing by escape or launching your own counter attack.

It's not to stand there like the juggernaut.

In an ambush getting a second chance is huge. If someone fails to stab me or incapacitate me with their first attack my chances for putting an end to them is sky high.

Some body armour is better than none, point taken, and a blade is not going to pass through a ballistic vest like it were made of warm butter. It's just worth pointing out that it's far less effective than a purpose built stab vest.

I don't know if kevlar stab vests are legal to purchase in the UK and I'm pretty sure that ballistic vest are verboten but this stuff looks like a pretty good compromise.

http://www.ringmesh.com/product_p/ls210.htm

Modern manufactured chainmail. Stainless steel and only 2.5 kgs. It could be sewn to the inside of a good jacket quite easily, and considering that stabbings in the UK are not exactly a "jihad only" event then there's worse things you could spend your money on.

Aside, is there any play in medieval armour game?

The story of the "martial arts expert" (a broad concept, but ok) getting stabbed in the neck somewhat twinged this issue for me.

I've known more than a few guys with tons of belts and fancy dojo titles. A newspaper reporter might well describe them as a "martial arts expert". But these guys were seriously lacking in basic aggression. And I'm not saying this because they didn't run around picking fights. They didn't carry themselves with a Steven Segal type of quiet but menacing professionalism. To be honest, most of them were flat out sooks and looking back I have to wonder if they were always like that or if their training literally turned them into soft-contact soy.

The way I see it, Martial Arts are a force multiplier and if there's little to no underlying force then you're essentially multiplying zero.

So what I'm getting around to is this. Do you guys still have access to your cave-man zero-fucks-given crush-the-tribal-enemy killer instinct? If you were at one of these events and an attacker came through the doorway with his back to you, could you legitimately bring yourself to use the most deadly option available to you with your truest full force?

If so, how does it figure into your training if at all?

Yup.
The quality of your training determines how well you will be able to tap into your aggression at will in a controlled manner.
Or you can be exposed to vicious attacks of violence in your area.
I grew up in a bad area in east London. Hackney if anyone knows the area. I fought kids at my school and in my area constantly. There was no reprieve from the violence.

When you see high level martial art practitioners lose badly it's because their training sucked. Full Stop.
Watching a friend of mine who learned Hap Ki Do for a decade get rocked by the first punch in a fight because their instructor never taught them how to deal with an attacker who didn't do kicks. Or watch them get taken down when they throw a high kick and then get ground pounded till unconscious because they never trained on how to deal with fighting off your back. (I know Hap Ki Do isn't a ground fighting MA but it can't be stressed enough to ask questions of your instructors about scenarios not covered in class)

I know i got very lucky finding a great school when i was a child.

Hindsight is 20/20. Knowing what we know now about the terrorist attack.
If i saw some guy coming into the restaurant i was in with a large knife or machete AND i had the element of surprise (his attention focused elsewhere) i wouldn't kill him. The arm holding the blade would be broken in several places rendering it useless and probably take out a knee if he tries to runaway before the cops arrive.
I know that if i killed him instantly with my hands they might try me for murder.

In Canada, a cop explained to me what the police feel is a viable self defense scenario in which the attacker dies and you live.
If you CAN escape the situation without engaging with the attacker then do so. Call the police and wait to give a detailed description. This applies if you are alone.
IF you are with someone who cannot reasonably escape out of the situation without your assistance (children, elderly people, people with disabilities) AND the attacker turns their attention toward that person then you can do enough physical damage to prevent them from continue the attack. This also applies to your wife/significant other.
Because we don't have ANY form of concealed carry or stand your ground for home defense in Canada he strongly suggested that i never use a firearm to defend myself UNLESS the attacker brought it with him. In the eyes of the court there is no justification to use a gun to defend yourself.
He also told me women get the benefit of the doubt if they happen to kill or severely injure the attacker.

I know that this stuff is illegal in Australia for example, but honestly, if there's one thing you can get away with wearing onto a plane from a foreign nation and stepping into your home nation with zero chance of being nabbed, it's tailored ballistic clothing.

You don't want a knife that looks like a fighting knife. Look at cutlery online, and buy a cheap fruit knife. You can always explain it away as a mistake if discovered. "Oh, i use it to cut up fruit and cheese that I carry as a snack". A friend had a client sent to prison because his client used a knife with a curved blade like a hawk's bill. The prosecutor picked it up and had it in his hands talking to the jury. The entire time he talked and gestured the jurors never took their eyes off of that curved blade.

Karambits have amazing advantages over wharncliffe knives.

1. Tend to be sharper.
2. Can slice strategically (tendons, wrists, etc.)
3. Require less leverage and downforce to slice
4. Can riposte and catch other blades
5. Can be used to redirect a limb or a persons body (can use the inside part of the knife's curvature to pull their arm/wrist off you.
6. Can disembowel someone easily.
7. Cuts throats, necks, and carotid arteries easier.
8. Psychologically more intimidating than a regular knife. May deter an assailant before they attack if revealed.

Maybe there is a good vid from Doug on this. I'll look later when I get a chance.

I like talon knives alot. I know some guys that carry them, that are FMA guys. I knew a redneck that loved his but he doesn't know any martial arts. He also liked using it to cut boxes and similar items with it as well.

Those are good because you can get numbers 1-8, except for numbers 4, 5, and 8 covered and have zero movement restrictions and concealment issues. That's a badass tradeoff if you do the math and consider what you are getting.

Anyway, that's all I can think about at the moment. Hope that helps.

Why would ballistic inserts be illegal in Aus? Now I can maybe see it if you were buying a tactical vest with level 3 plates inside that stop rifle rounds at even point blank range.

Anything that can stop a small round put inside a laptop backpack like the SAS guy demo'd and Colion Noir in the two vids above is reasonable.

Now if you cannot purchase, is one thing. Confiscation if caught or arrested wearing it, is another matter.

You aren't wearing it for committing a crime. You are wearing it for terror related purposes.

Body armor should be a human right, even if guns are not considered as such.

Might even be worth getting a bodyguard license if it meant that you could legally own things others cannot.

As always, your personal safety is your responsibility, no one else's.

Shooting deaths have never been a large cause of fatality in Australia.

Wearable ballistic armour is definitely illegal. Ballistic inserts in a backpack? Not sure. If the authorities wanted to get you for it then you are essentially "wearing" body armour. As with all things it's the principle that matters and the principle is that the peons shall not bear arms (and associated paraphernalia).

Fruit knife

There is alot of context missing here.

You are not fooling anyone by carrying a fruit knife at all. If this was in America, and not one of the Liberal Hellholes, you have a right to defend yourself with a carry knife. You do not have a right to stab someone that is trying to shove you in the chest either.

This goes back to Discrepancy of Force and Force Multipliers.

A Force Multiplier is any weapon (from tree branch, a brass knuckles, a bat, to a gun)

1. A woman is justified to use deadly force on pretty much any male. No jury is going to hold any woman accountable for killing a man with any weapon that attackers her.

2. An elderly or disabled man can use deadly force on a young stronger male, but you have to be able to demonstrate why you needed a force multiplier to defend your life against that other man. (ie did he show clear intent to kill you? Did he grab a rock or a force multiplier of his own? Was he fast and powerful when charging you, etc.)

3. A tree branch is not a deadly weapon but if it was large enough, it is. If you swat a teenager with one to make him leave your yard, no reasonable prosecutor is going to charge you with assault with a deadly weapon, if he thought you were not justified.

4. For man vs. man, and most things equal in the eyes of the court, a fist fight is NOT appropriate use of elevated force. Some punk ass bitch on the beach talking shit to you because he is drunk and is trying to flex in front of his girl and his boyz, is not a valid use of force to whip out a knife, stick, gun, etc. If he shoves you in the chest. Still not a valid reason. If he punches you but you do not fall down or get knocked out/dazed. Still not valid. If he is stomping/pounding you on the ground. Valid. Blast him. That is why stupid Zimmerman was able to walk away from that Trayvon Martin case. He could explain that he was in fear for his life. He had no idea when Martin was going to stop punching him.

5. The principle of equal force matters. If some dude pulls out a baseball bat and is charging you, you are in most states, able to pull out anything else including a handgun. He has a force multiplier and deadly force is authorized. If the guy does this 30 meters (60 feet away), you cannot do this. Brandishing a weapon to intimidate anyone is a felony. You could brandish a weapon to stop an attacker from attacking you, but it's not recommended at all. If you need to pull one, it's better to do so when you can use it. Someone far away making threats, even with a weapon, is for you to leave and get to safety and call the police. If a thug lifts his shirt to show you a pistol, you better not shoot at him if he was like 100 ft. away, especially if he is not making his way over to you or getting closer.

Back to equal force. If a guy grabs a skinny tree branch to hit you with, a gun is unequal force, unless you fit number 1 and 2. If a bitch or a dude throws a high heel shoe at you, a gun or a knife is not justified to use either. If it was a lead pipe, a large wrench, guns or knives are justified.

Lastly you have to use common fucking sense.

Look at this shit.
[Image: master-cutlery-hk-1496-devils-assassin-t...detail.jpg]

This kind of shit is stupid as fuck. Good luck keeping an asshole prosecutor off your ass when he shows the jury your "premeditated murder" weapon of choice to the jury and assaults your character.

Don't paint skulls or The Punisher logo on your everyday carry firearm.

Don't paint tribal art on your shit. It screams, "I am an animal with no self control."

Anything you carry, should be BLACK in color. Discreet and CONCEALED. Nobody usually bothers an open carry handgun person, but they have to be careful not to put their hand on their gun and cross that line when having a confrontation with someone. A gold plated El Chapo desert eagle screams "I'm a drug cartel member!!!" Imagine the judge looking at your self defense weapon and then he looks at your face. Ditto for a jury.

If you have to use your weapon, call the police immediately and do not flee the scene unless it is still dangerous to be there.

Well you should know your local laws better than outsiders. Make your own risk assessments.

No jury would realistically send anyone to prison for defending themselves against a terrorist attack with a carry knife. Heck most prosecutors are not likely to incur the public's wrath to try that. That said, if guns are not supposed to be carried in your country, and you blast even a terrorist during an attack with it, you are still very very likely going to at the bare minimum be charged with possession of a firearm, which usually means jail time and a mark on your record.

So make a risk assessment and figure out which risks you are able to take and which ones you are not willing to take, then follow up with appropriate actions.

Even Muslims in Europe need to assess their own levels of risks. If enough non-Muslims get blown up, stabbed, and shot they cannot assume the SJWs, the politicians, and other locals will protect them from a resurgent group of nationalistic males. All people in the world have limits, what those limits are, varies from place to place. Even if you associate with Muslim friends, being in proximity to them has a level of risk to it.

Always be thinking about what risks are around you, assess them, rank them, then apply solutions or countermeasures to mitigate those risks.

Laws vary considerably across Australia. I know there was a case in Victoria a few years ago where a bloke was looking jail time because he had a star wars blaster looking thing sticking out of his backpack on southbank. Cue freakout, police called. Under Victorian law at the time, if it looks like a firearm it is.
Admittedly it's been a while since I worked security, but you cold only own any sort of modern body armor here if you had valid reason like cash in transit was your job.

Yeah, like America most of our laws are state based. In western Australia for example even a spent 22lr cartridge is essentially counted as "ammunition". Hell, a paintball is counted as "ammunition". I've pulled spent 22lr cases out of my boot treads the day after a range visit and found them rolling around my ute tray weeks after my last wallaby massacre. Both instances would in theory be the equivalent of felony offences in Western Australia.

Travelerkai is correct that you need to know your local laws but I would say it's just as important if not more so to know your local case history regarding such laws. There are some laws you can break without ever being prosecuted and alternately there are some grey areas where even if you skate on the white side of the spectrum they'll still nail you to a wall with extreme prejudice.

I'm sure that in red Texas the local LEOs give zero shits about whether a particular gun is a "pistol that's too long" or a "rifle that's too short" under federal law. Meanwhile in California if you screw a compensator on the end of your pistol that brings it over the maximum allowable length then they'll probably throw the book at you and tell you to get a good lawyer.

It's not nearly as interesting as it sounds.

You go out on the back of a ute at night with a spotlight and bump off a few dozen hopping grass-thieves. It keeps your practice up and it helps the local farmers out but it can get a little tedious at times. The buggers simply have no protective instinct against the distant hum of an engine and the glare of a high powered torch.

They might get a bit skittish after the first shot (since we're not allowed to have suppressors here) so the only real challenge is to get as many as possible before they start to scatter, and maybe pick off the slower ones as they try to get away.

But for being stuck with bolt actions and lever guns it would be child's play.

What are wallabies doing? I mean, what shit did they cause to your home/yard, etc.?

They eat the grass the cows are supposed to eat and also get into the farmer's crops.

It might not sound like a big deal but a dozen wallabies = one less cow the farmer can run on their property. 120 wallabies is ten cows. It all adds up. It might sound harsh on the fluffy little buggers and the farmers spend thousands and thousands trying to put up decent fences to keep them out but more than a few of the bastards still find a way in regardless.

RE: TravelerKai’s Martial Arts Datasheet
Hats off to travelerkai for starting this thread. Your datasheet is awesome-learned a lot of new shit.
Im considering hitting bkk by then end of the year to train muay thai. Im torn between master toddy's gym and bangkok fight lab. I'd like some intel if anyone has any experience with either gym.
My priority is developing a solid muay thai base but I would also like to develop my ground game.

Opportunities don't happen. You create them

RE: TravelerKai’s Martial Arts Datasheet
TK - I really like this thread and would rate it as one of the most highly useful and best threads on the forum.

Starting on July 5th, I am starting BJJ at a Gracie gym. I have never done a martial art. I have had self defense training, I wrestled in jr high and early high school, I have boxed on and off but never was a competitive boxer. I was a street fighter as a kid, and started fighting as a child up through high school, in numerous fist fights and group fights. I gave it up after high school. So I think I am better physically than most newbies.

I am starting BJJ at 41. I am inspired by listening to the Joe Rogan podcast, especially the Guy Richie episode. Since I have easy access to a Gracie gym, I thought I would do it. I would like to get a Brown belt, or, if I progress well and stay consistent, I want to get a Black belt by the time I am 50, which is 8 years.

Do you have any suggestions or advice for me?
