RE: TravelerKai’s Martial Arts Datasheet
This isn't really a self-defense situation, but the first time I watched this video, I was surprised by how well this dude did in his wrestling match with these police. Two of them are on top of him and he gets out and takes full mount on one of them. They don't get him subdued until they hit him with the baton a few times and apply a choke. Do you think the arrestee might have had some wrestling experience?

Geez that was painful to watch. The female cop was useless.
I don't know if he had some grappling experience but i do know the cop made so many mistakes in trying to control the guy. (regardless if the cop's actions were even needed, i can't hear the audio)

1. Cop shouldn't have even bothered pushing the guy away with a forearm to the throat. Too much aggression up front left him with less options once he got physical with the guy.

2. Once they start trying to straight choke each other the cop should've immediately switched a type of wrist or arm lock to gain leverage and bring him to the ground. When the cop pushed him up against the window and was attempting to choke him the female cop should've done more to get control of his free arm and/or took out her hand cuffs.

3. Once they got him to the ground the male officer standing up should've switched places with the female cop. Isolated the free arm and applied a wrist lock and put hand cuffs on the one arm. Also the female cop was on the back of the male officer while he had the guy pinned to the ground, WTF was she doing??
Talk about the most useless position to be in while a fellow officer is fighting with a suspect.

4. When the guy rolled the cop onto his back the female cop should've had her baton out already. Like i stated above he wouldn't have been able to gain control and roll the cop over IF she did her fucking job and controlled one of his arms.
The Black cop is an idiot. He's clearly a large and strong dude but I'm guessing he's had little to no grapple training. He's focused all of his energy in pressing his forearm on the guys throat...for what reason i do not know.
I think the black officer might be learning BJJ (white belt or limited exposure to BJJ) because once they go to the ground the second time he clearly goes for some kind of rear naked choke but his legs are no where near the right position.

Cuffs don't come out until the suspect is more or less completely subdued. If you only get one wrist on and the suspect gets loose then he's suddenly swinging a reasonably heavy chunk of hooked metal around with his fist.

RE: TravelerKai’s Martial Arts Datasheet
Man I hate police like that. So many police are walking around like they are terminators. I hope they throw the book at that manlet officer. The guy who gets arrested only lost because he spent the first critical seconds being repeatedly struck in the throat and backed up. Those officers are an embarrassment. A big, bad dude could have had the three of them on their way to intensive care.

Most officers have no idea how lucky they are that the majority of citizens respect the law. Chicks and manlets have no business being on the front lines, it is an affront to masculine citizens who may have to interact with the thin blue line. On the very rare occasion that I've been ordered to do something/accosted by a female police officer, it has driven me absolutely wild. It is an unreasonable affront by the state to expect a man to crawl and take orders from someone who could not, in their wildest fantasy, subdue you by force.

Yeah, female police officers are a joke.

I worked in a security setting where we routinely had to call the police. Whenever they sent female officers they took one look at the situation and called for, you guessed it, backup.

By bizarre coincidence, of the dozens of times backup arrived there was not a single instance of it being another pair of female officers.

What are the odds?

During my time as an instructor we did plenty of scenarios using handcuffs dynamically. In a solo situation yes, when you are fighting with a suspect putting on the cuffs when both arms are not properly secured and/or the subject is not subdued is a bad idea. However, the officer was not alone he had at least 2 additional officers as "back up" that we can see in the video at the beginning of the physical conflict.

All of these police officers lack the training to de-escalate situations like these, especially the black guy.

For example, in that specific situation i would've instructed the female officer to grab and restrain the free hand of the suspect. Pulling it away from the body as far as possible. Then pinning the forearm/wrist area to the ground with her knee and the applying the handcuff.
At this point the black officer would isolate the other arm and then be able to properly subdue the guy by getting him on the his stomach and which point the female officer can re-position herself and the suspects arm, while still maintaining control, to bring the other arm to complete the handcuff.

You would trust the female officer to do that? Knowing that if she screws up you're going to get a smith+wesson bracelet to the head?

I agree that when you have a tight team then you can do that sort of stuff, for sure, but as of ten years ago in my neck of the woods they were already dumbing down the techniques knowing that the female officers weren't capable team members.

Everything went from group dynamics to assumed individual officer. Where a second officer was present the advice was generally for them to lock down the knees.

Beyond that the assumption was simply "dogpile" which is what usually ended up happening anyway.

Yeah like said before she was fucking useless and the training these cops have is severely lacking. No excuse for this. I guess the higher ups think arming them with tasers, guns and a baton is good enough.

Question for TK (and anyone else with insights):

Is there a particular method (or competing methods) for breathing techniques when fighting?

How would one practice / train breathing for max stamina and performance?

This is the only other breathing thread I could find on the forum -- /thread-29665...70318.html

To start off are you wanting to know how to breath efficiently in regards to being able to last longer endurance wise or more towards punching/striking power?

It is my understanding that if you want increase your endurance that training your respiratory system (running/stationary bicycle) is the best way to have more endurance. Yes breathing more efficiently is always better but having higher base stamina is preferable.
Wim Hof is a great guy to look into about breathing in general.

Endurance, multiple strikes, during plyometric type stuff, etc.

Funny you say that -- I have a basic Wim Hof video open in my browser right now.

I was mainly wondering if there were tips to be mindful of during exertion. Some websites say to breath through the nose, some say you need more air so any heavy exertion should be mouth breathing.

When running the advice is 3 steps inhale, 3 steps exhale. Yet it seems impossible to breath in such a controlled manner when doing burpees. Lots of conflicting info.

With striking during training or during a fight i pattern my breathing around the point of impact.

For example, i exhale slowly but consistently when applying techniques like chokes or locks.
I exhale forcefully when i am punching or kicking my opponent.
All the breathing comes from the stomach/abdominal area. Think of it as a forceful breath, so at the point of impact my lungs do not have any air in them. And your abs will be tight and contracted in preparation for the potential to be hit there.
The more forceful the strike the hard you exhale almost like you're transferring all of your body's energy into that strike.

This is very similar to the traditional "Kiai" yell that is common with Japanese style martial arts but there is no yell just the exhaling.

Let me know if this makes sense at all. It's a lot easier to demonstrate in the dojo.

It makes sense, thank you.

And one last question -- what about inhaling after a forceful exhale?

Do you breath in just as forcefully right after the strike? Through your nose or mouth? And what if you are throwing a combo... are you exhaled fully for the first strike or timing your exhale to last through the series of strikes? And then, again, do you suck in wind quickly immediately afterward, or is it a slower / less forceful inhale (keeping in mind the opponent may be countering at that moment)?

I breath out through my mouth with force and inhale through my nose.
I don't find a purpose in breathing forcefully.
As far as throwing combinations and breathing, i usually breath according to the amount of force I'm putting into the strike. Like I'm throwing a few jabs out then finishing with a hard punch, i take a few shallow breaths and then exhale with force for the hardest final strike.

typically when I choke I inhale, mostly because that's putting more pressure on the chokee.

I would keep in mind to not telegraph your strikes or techniques with your breathing. That is, in a strike your hand should be moving before the sharp exhalation begins. If I'm fighting someone I'll love it if they literally tell me they're about to punch or kick with a sharp exhalation or the initial /k/ sound of their kiap.

Looking at pro Muay Thai boxers, it doesn't look like there's a correlation between breathing and striking. Just deep, consistent breathing.

They are fine. I don't see much wrong with them. There is nothing wrong with DVDs and books as long as you actually have a base to work off from. If you are completely green, go learn a style first, then supplement later. Only then would those things make sense, because it never works too well if done without prior training.

I might even go further by saying studying martial arts (in person or DVD wise) in general, requires a decent and workable body to begin with. That video in the lounge of that fat kid slicing water bottles made me think of all the things a traditional Japanese teacher in Japan would make him do first before he allowed him to participate with the rest of a class.

I saw John Wick 2 this weekend. I recognized all of the chokes, holds, and throws from my Judo training. I'm not yet at the level of being able to do those moves with the speed or efficiency of John Wick, of course. But it's really neat watching an action movie and realizing in a controlled environment, I actually can do almost everything the main hero is doing!

This is from the 1st movie. I can't imagine it changing much in the second.

TravelerKai, amazing post. I never imagined that I'd get to see the perfect Data Sheet so quickly. I'm in the DFW area and have been finding it difficult to stay motivated to hit the gym and keep up a regiment of any kind. I lost my job at the beginning of the year the situation laid waste to any drive I had. I decided that I need to learn a Martial Art to give me focus and some discipline. Based on your data and my own interest I feel Silat is best suited for me. So I wanted to ask a few questions.

1. I have no foundation, so what type of training regimen would be best suited to for supporting Silat?

2. Dim Mak seems to require Qi Gong/Gong Fu based on what I have read in order to practice it. Does it have to be QG/GF or is a foundation in another art, as in Silat, okay?

3. Also, would Qi Gong be the art of applying internal strength? I feel like Silat combined with internal strength sounds powerful. Could you learn them simultaneously? or best to choose 1 style.

You're way overthinking this.

Pick a standard, popular martial art like Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai or BJJ. The right one to pick is the one with the best gym and instructors that's nearby to you.

From the sounds of it you're probably out of shape so most of your work is going to be in cardio/endurance for the first couple of months anyway. You'll be tempted not to go so picking a place that's convenient for you to get to is really important. Walking distance from your work/home is the best.

Hey Bro, thanks for the kind feedback.

1. For Silat, regular conditioning to start off is more than good enough. You don't need to hulk out or go hardcore into Strength and Conditioning. You could do 10 push ups on your hands, knuckles, fingers, then subtract a finger until you get to 2 fingers left (Dont worry if you cannot finish, do what you can).

Do basic core excercises, stretch alot. Get your lower body stronger too if you can fit it in. Mostly do what the instructor teaches you starting out. I don't want you to burn out quickly. Pace yourself.

2. Yes and no.... For starters, Dim Mak is very highly specialized knowledge. It would take you around 10 years of decent knowledge of martial arts to learn it. Also, almost every teacher of Dim Mak (if you can find a legit one), only does it through CMA and you likely need to train with them for a while.

Dim Mak is more of a lifestyle than just another tool. You will be studying meridians, pressure points, etc for your whole life and still not know enough about it. If you want a taste, visit a class in acupuncture and see how you like that. They use the knowledge to reroute pain and heal the body, the other uses it mostly to destroy, but also to heal because you have to know how to reverse the effects in order to learn it.

There are easier to learn parts of DM, you could supplement any style with. The Sang H Kim book is a good example of that.

3. Pick one. Internal strength is a life long thing and you could possibly never learn it well. You could pick Silat and learn enough to defend yourself in a few months and get exponentially better each year. It could take you over 10 years to learn enough CMA with internal strength that could repel an attacker with ease, but there is a chance that won't even happen.

I have met Chinese Style Martial Artists that studied it way longer than me, that I could punch a hole through, and one that sent me flying into a wall. The results vary and really depend on the person. Hence the warning I put at the bottom of the guide. If you had internal power, you would not need Silat. That defeats the purpose of learning it. I think Anderson Silva has internal power but never told Dana White and others about it because they would have banned him (I been calling this for years). He play punched guys and knocked them out cold. You don't need fancy moves if you can tap into your power like that.

The long story short is that Silat is far more efficient than CMA and Dim Mak. You will also be more athletic enough to fight multiple people. That Dim Mak master probably could not fight off 4 large Aussies wanting to kick his ass. He might send one to the hospital or even kill one and impair another, but he will be going there himself after he gets knocked to the ground.

Pencak Silat will give you enough tools to get them off you to escape at a minimum. Same goes for Systema in that regard.

Most Silat schools at least do light sparring. I don't think any CMA school with Dim Mak spar at all, if they do, I would want to see that, because knowing all kinds of stuff still does not prepare you for real world and reactions to getting hit or suckerpunched.

If I were to advise a person deadset on learning Dim Mak, I would say go box at a local gym for six months at some point, so that you can toughen up your body. A person fit like a boxer with Dim Mak skills is very deadly.

Also Dim Mak people don't necessarily have internal power either. I met some that did and some that did not.

1 John 4:20 - If anyone says, I love God, and hates (detests, abominates) his brother [in Christ], he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, Whom he has not seen.
