I am a 24 year old American male. I have looked into joining the military. I was told by a Marines recruiter that I am disqualified from joining because of my misdemeanor drug conviction and several other arrests that did not result in convictions. The recruiter told me to check with the other branches, which I plan to do, but chances are they have similar rules.

I never thought about joining earlier because I always had the attitude that the wars we are fighting are stupid, but I now realize that it I have looked into joining citizen's militias (although I've been told to be careful about this), and enrolling in firearms training courses. I cannot see myself being satisfied always living a safe life, and accepting that if shit ever hits the fan, I will not be in a position to play an active role in defending myself, and that my only option would be to flee and become a refugee, depending on other people to protect me.

I have seen some of Jack Donovan's videos and read his blog, and he talks about how men are evolved to be "barbarians" or to live "on the perimeter" as opposed to living comfortably within society, but that there are not enough jobs available to men who want to be on the perimeter, and many men have to live life safely within society, trying to be economically successful while depending on others for physical safety. I cannot see myself living my whole life like this. Plus, my family is middle-class and owns property, so it's not like being economically successful is even going to be that much of an accomplishment. One way or another, I want to be in a position where if shit hits the fan, I can be responsible for my own safety rather than having to use money, or victimhood (becoming a "refugee"), to get someone else to protect me.

P.S. I am planning to start a family soon (with my wife who I've known since I was 16), which is all the more reason to not want to ultimately depend on others for safety. How am I going to teach my future sons to stick up for themselves and fight while also showing them that we will always depend on a government of strangers to keep us safe?

Strangely the military branches are more strict about drug or alcohol related convictions than they are about some felonies like assault.

I would recommend getting involved in a combat sport like MMA or boxing, that is probably your best modern world equivalent.

What's your over arching goal. If combat is primary goal, then French foreign legion. They don't ask questions, are always deployed to the point is there's a 20% chance you'll be killed in your five years. That'll take care of your apathy to safety feeling.

I believe you're granted French citizenship at the end if you survive.

The biggest spanner is you'll be putting off your prospective wife for five years.

I believe the army is the most lenient branch when it comes to letting people join them. But the fact is that there is absolutely no shortage of people joining the military today, so they can afford to pick and choose who they let join. If you are overweight, have a considerable criminal record, have terrible credit, fail a drug test, have baby mama/child support drama, have medical problems, or are a complete moron, you may find it difficult or impossible to get in.

The French Foreign Legion is always an option. I was going through a personal dilemma myself when the thought came to my head. Might be a good thing to do post Army, or if you feel comfortable/strong enough, now.

You don't need to join the military to learn how to be a fighter or survivalist.

First thing you should do is get all your records expunged ASAP if possible.

Second, realize being a fighter/warrior is NOT family friendly. I knew a guy in the military who had a very cush paper pushing job with six figure paydays waiting on the outside but wanted to go cross-train and be spec ops or whatever despite being married and having a new born baby. I get the appeal if you have never pushed yourself before (a lot young men feel this way) but a combat/warrior lifestyle results in A LOT of wear and tear on your body, your mind, and your family life if you have one. Being a warrior is mostly a single young man's game when you have nothing to lose. To do it as a family man requires a special man AND woman for it to work.

Finally, you are probably DQ'ed on the US military forever. But I would ask what would happen if you got an expungement and if it would make a difference. That said, the US military is VERY PC right now and not something I would recommend to a red pill aware guy unless you had no other realistic options.

The French Foreign Legion is a possibility but it's not a "we take anyone" military anymore and they do have standards. Their lifestyle and training is no bullshit though and you need to learn French on top of it. I can't imagine trying to do this all when trying to start a family on top of it.

Best thing realistically? Find some gun and prepper/survivalist clubs and hang with those guys and learn from them.

You can get a waiver if its only marijuana and enlist in the US Navy. Marines should have the same, or similar, policy.

It sounds like you are dude with some strong convictions, so don't give up if this this is really what you want to do.

Don't listen to recruiters. Get their CO in on it. Tell him (or her these days) your situation and get the waiver process going. Don't take no for an answer. Until you get Barack Obama on the phone you can always go up the ladder.

Write your congressman. That's not a joke, that's their job.

Here's what bothers me about your situation: you starting a family.

I went all over the world. I went to all kinds of places with big pockets full of cash. You think yacht game is something, be an officer on a guided missile cruiser. Women love it. There were tons of guys I would just watch sit on the ship because all their money went to their x wife back home. It was hard to see, and I can't imagine going through it.

Another part to that to consider is that unless you have a high risk job, its boring. It isn't fair to the guys you are with on a mission if you are worried about your kids and wife. You gotta be sharp.

Last thing to consider is the family themselves. You can easily die, or get disabled. I would never want to put that burden on a wife or kids, and doubt you would either.

Good luck, and don't quit. Fire away with any questions. Myself and some other guys here have been though everything military related.

Black Knight made a great point. A lot of guys have a deep need to push their limits and contribute to something significant.

I didn't find that by becoming a Marine. Joining the military won't solve that existential crisis.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very proud of the Corps and what I did but your sense of worth needs to come from you, not the things you do. I think women are incapable of understanding what that means and only get as far as faking value to themselves.

I certainly do not mean that you should start posting gay little platitudes on Facebook and get really into Eat, Pray, Love. I think there's a difficult path to manhood.

A man with internal value will naturally be an accomplished, well-rounded man.

If that's not your struggle and anti-fragility in an economic and physical security sense is the true goal, I recently connected with the local state militia. It's not a bad group and you'll certainly get exposure to concepts that you can explore further.

I have the same concern for safety to do, but I'm looking to find it in clever positioning instead of building a fortress and stuff like that.

You can learn to fight without going into the military, but one thing that's hard to test is how you react when the shit hits the fan.

You should consider getting into volunteer emergency services. Get EMT training, maybe become a volunteer firefighter, and go out on calls. You'll learn very useful skills and test your mettle when people are fucked up and relying on you for help. Being an EMT can be hairy, and if you really want the physical danger test you can work your way onto the fire crews that enter burning buildings.

Wildland firefighting/medicine is another (supplemental) option. It's legitimately dangerous and tough work.

At this time, I strongly recommend not joining the military. I'm sorta interested in going back into the army, getting into a NG SF unit perhaps (I was not SF during active duty, to be clear), but there's no way I'd join under the current leadership. It was bad enough 10 years ago; it is fucking awful now.

By the way, for future reference this sort of question really belongs in the Lifestyle forum.

Sure losing friends was tough but the experiences granted in exchange were well worth the cost. It's all up to the parents as to how they want to raise their kids. My mother was fairly active on base and there was always things for the people to do if they wanted to. Most people just let their life fall to shit because they have no discipline.

Imagine how different things would be for your folks if your dads legs got blown off, or broke his neck.

Your mom would no longer be active on the base because you no longer live there, and she's busy changing his catheter. She has no choice because the only income you got is disability.

I was at Yokosuka for a year with one of my best friends. He's an Arkansas redneck with three kids. They couldn't leave the bubble, because the had no clue about anything outside the gate. As hard as they tried, 18 months later he got sent somewhere else.

Now imagine your dad got killed. It would change everything.

Without knowing more about the "several other arrests" it's hard to say for sure, but I can say with certainty that plenty of guys have joined and will join with misdemeanor drug convictions. You may have trouble getting a security clearance down the road, but not every job in the military requires that, at least not as a private. Ask another recruiter - chances are the one you talked to was not pressed enough for numbers and didn't want to bother with whatever extra steps it would take to get you in the door.

But if you are trying to start a family, the short answer is scrap the whole thing - seriously. Coming in as a private in any of the services - especially the combat arms - is positively the worst decision you could make. Go to night school, learn a trade, get a skill in something where you aren't deployed to Trashcanistan nine months out of the year and doing field training in the middle of nowhere, USA the other three. Be home with your wife and family every night and forget the GI Joe stuff.

Sure you **may** be able to make it work with the right woman, in the right military job (think, non-deployable, non-combat arms, might as well be a mail man kind of job), but the odds are against you. I agree with the other posters that you could definitely learn more actual fighting skills at the right MMA gym. Weapons training, maybe not quite as much, but you can still get some good courses taught by vetted ex-military types, on your schedule.

Guy in my unit spent time in prison for dealing heroin but was able to join the national guard since it happened 10 years in the past. Military deployments is hard on families, your military training syllabus isn't oriented towards keeping them safe or showing you how to teach your sons to be men.

Pretty sure you can't join the FFL if married.

Dude don't. Just don't. You'll probably regret it when the military fails to meet your expectations. Been in Army for over 3 years. 9 mos spent in Afghanistan, the rest here in Hawaii. Great duty station, shit job. You'll perform many mind numbing tasks on a daily basis. If you cherish your freedom, find something more productive to do with your life. The military nowadays is full of liberal, femtard corporate micro-management bullshit. I'm just one person and someone else may say the military was the best opportunity of their lives. Be your own fucking man unless you want some fucking man-child cuck NCO constantly telling you how to live your life when he can't even control his own life (slut dependa wife, spoiled as kids, work dominating his life, etc). Live your fucking life, steer clear of the military unless you really haven't got shit else going for you.

LOTS of truth there. Story time:

Was in a training class with a crew I had known for a month or so and for the most part, everyone was tight with each other. Really great vibe actually.

So, we all show up for a class but have a sub filling in for a bit until the real teacher arrives; she was gonna be there for an hour or so tops. Anyhow, this sub happens to be pregnant and was a Cunt NCO of epic proportions and was basically waiting for someone in the class to say something to trigger her. She was in bad mood from the moment she walked into the class.

So me and my crew (a class of about 20 or so) are all just shooting the shit and having a laugh during a break or whatever. I can't recall the details of what was said but I happen to make a comment (nothing offensive or un-PC) among the crowd that generated a laugh. I wasn't even talking about the cunt NCO or even towards her but nonetheless, some benign thing I said triggered her and she stormed out of the room and went to go get the senior NCO Bossman to come rip my ass.

I knew what was coming (not my first rodeo dealing with overly sensitive cunts in the military) so I asked the senior ranking person that was part of my class, a woman who I was cool with and had witness everything, to tag along when the Bossman shows up.

A few minutes later, Bossman shows up and orders me outside the classroom. I bring my witness with me. I could tell just by his face and demeanor he was going to rip my ass because according to Cunt NCO, I said, "Blah Blah blah offensive thing" and therefore, I will be on thin ice going forward and I could be kicked out of the training program for bad conduct if this happens again. But before the Bossman could start ripping into my ass, I had my witness (same rank as the Bossman thankfully) explain what had happened and that the Cunt NCO was acting WAY out of line and making a big deal out of nothing. The Bossman's face completely changed from anger to relief and he dismissed me immediately knowing that deep down this whole thing was probably all bullshit anyway.

But the military is so PC these days that he just HAD to act because some pregnant cunt made a complaint. Luckily at that point in my career, I knew how to play the game and I had a high ranking NCO on my side to back-up my side of the story. If I didn't have that back-up however, I would have had to continue my training living on thin ice (with real career consequences if another bullshit incident occurred) because of a pregnant Cunt NCO and a PC military culture that caters to bullshit.

Incidents like this happen ALL THE TIME in the military and can destroy careers and/or make your life a living hell; especially if you are low ranking and/or don't know how to play the game. Incidents like the aforementioned were a major reason why I left the military for good and never looked back. In fact, it's bullshit like this that pushes away the good people that you want in the military and retains the garbage people you don't want.

It sucks because the military with the right group of people and the right environment can be a kick ass thing. The modern US military though under Obama especially? Basically like living in a prison for red pill men where the guards are libtard SJWs and/or cucks.
